If you want to get stronger and be in better shape, you have to learn one of the most important principles of muscle growth: progressive overload. Progressive overload is simply doing more work over time. Most people think the only way they can progress in the gym is to add more weight to the bar. If they didn't add more weight than last week, they feel like a failure. But once you're an intermediate to advanced lifter with several years of experience under your belt, that just won't be physically possible. So in this Minisode, I wanted to cover 11 other ways (the 12th IS adding weight to the bar) to progressively overload and consistently see results. Enjoy!

Dieting is hard. And one of the hardest parts is staying on track after you've had a long week at work. Monday through Thursday is often a breeze because we have a routine, we have work, and our days are mostly repetitive. But when the weekend comes, all of that goes out the window, with our diet plans following. So in this Minisode, I wanted to give some practical strategies that I use with myself and clients to combat overeating on the weekends. Hope it helps!

Absolute banger of an episode with one of my good friends, Carter. He returns to the podcast after a hiatus away and reminded me why I chose him as my very first guest on The More Than Fitness Podcast. If you scroll back, you'll see Carter on episode 3. Many episodes later and we're chatting again, both in different locations than the first time—he was in Columbus, OH and is now in Austin, TX and I was in Lexington, KY, now in New York City—but we're still connecting in the same way we did in that very first conversation.
In this episode, we cover his recent move to Austin with girlfriend Kaylin, what it's taught him and why he's not running away from his problems like he has in the past, why surrounding yourself with different types of people is good for you, how to learn from role models that are living the life you want to live, the science of happiness, the evolution of hard work as you get older and priorities change, why hustle is so important when you first start a career, the importance of stopping and reflecting before moving forward, craftsman-driven mindset and purpose-driven mindset, comparing yourself to others, and much, much more!

When you're on a fat loss diet, should you feel bad for eating a burger and fries with friends on the weekend? Because you're enjoying yourself and living life, but you're going over your daily calorie goal — should you feel bad for not aligning your actions with your values or should you let it slide because you wanted to have fun?
It's a trick question because both could be correct, but it depends on your situation. When should you buckle down and when should you let loose? And how do you deal with that from a practical perspective? These are the questions I answer in this Minisode as I cover an internal dilemma one of my clients is facing. Hope it helps.

A WILDLY exciting debate that's been going on for a while in the fitness industry is whether low carb/high fat or low fat/high carb diets are best for fat loss—I know, it's riveting. Luckily, there's been some recent research that might put this debate to rest, and the answer may not be what you think. So in this minisode, I (briefly) cover this new study, along with what the results were. More importantly, I tell you what the results mean for you and your goals, and what you should do next. And lastly, I give my opinion and recommendations for what I personally do, as well as what I teach my clients. Hope it helps.

No new episode for this week, so we're throwing it back to one of my favorite, longest, and most raucous episodes to date.
This was an in-person conversation with Cody and Austin during our stay in Philadelphia together for a conference. We shared a bottle of wine, turned the mic on, and the outcome was a nearly 2-hour long talk about fitness, nutrition, business, relationships, life, and more. As the minutes went on, the drunker we became, so make sure you stick this one through until the end. I have a feeling there will be many, many more conversations like this one in the future, so I hope you enjoy.

Not my best work, but that was kinda the point for this Minisode. It was a gloomy morning when I recorded this and I wasn't feeling sad or happy—more just kinda bleh—but I knew I had to record a Minisode this day, so I turned on the mic and started talking. The result was this Minisode. Give it a listen and see if you can relate.

Time and time again, I get people who apply for 1:1 coaching with me and they say they have a bad habit of eating at night. Due to media, or news, or their co-worker Karen — they’ve heard eating at night is bad for them. But, is that actually true? Does eating at night make you fat? In this Minisode, I answer that question by starting with the science, "What's the research say?" Then I give a simple rundown on what happens to your body as you eat throughout the day, and what truly dictates fat loss. Lastly, I cover this topic from a common-sense perspective, ending with some hypotheticals on why this may or may not be true. Hope it helps!

Kasey is an online fitness coach, a coach of coaches, and has her PhD in Psychology. I learned about Kasey through her boyfriend and past guest, Sam Miller, who isn't as pretty to look at, but is still a great fella ;) But overall, we had a wholesome chat about a few of her strengths: mindset, habit-building, goal setting, psychology and behavior change, fixed vs growth mindset, values, and plenty more. Not to mention, I think we touched on a lot more personal details that Kasey hasn't shared on other podcasts, including hiding her career choice from her high-achieving parents, everywhere she's excited to travel post-COVID, her big project for 2021, and, of course, her alternate career choice in a different world. Excited for you guys to hear this one, so hope you enjoy.

When it comes to building muscle, your body doesn't bias one exercise over the other — we do that on our own. We have people shaming those who use the Smith Machine or for using dumbbells instead of barbells, yet our muscles only respond to stimulus, so they don't care about what method is used (or anything at all). So, I wanted to bust some of these myths out there and try to set the record straight for choosing exercises for building muscle.
The two main criteria I looked at were 1) the exercise's potential to accumulate volume and/or total work with minimal fatigue and 2) the potential injury risk from the exercise itself and from the lifter's ego. I think my answers may surprise some of you... hope you enjoy!
