  • DCS: Ever After

Recently acquired through that good ol' Fox Merger, Disney presents: "EVER AFTER" a Cinderella Story. You've never experienced the story of a the poor girl who goes from rags to riches quite like this.

Starring Drew Barrymore and Anjelica Houston, set in the Renaissance Era, we are treated to the familiar tale of a sweet girl named Danielle who loses her father at a young age and is raised in servitude by her evil step-mother and two step-sisters. After a chance encounter with the rebellious and charming Prince Henry, Danielle is given the opportunity to realize her dreams and free herself of the cruelty and toxicity of her family. Not only is Danielle kind but she is also strong and quite progressive and well-educated. This is a princess story that, like Danielle, is ahead of it's time and has plenty of entertainment for Disney and non-Disney fans alike.

This week we are having you listeners vote on what we watch and review:

BABY'S DAY OUT - When a kidnapping goes wrong by a trio of bumbling criminals, an adorable Baby must navigate the big city that surrounds him and get home. It's Home Alone...but with a baby!

HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID - The sequel to "Honey, I Shrunk Kids." Following another botched scientific experiment, Wayne Szalinski, played once again by Rick Moranis, and his son Nick as they try to stop the youngest addition of the family from getting too big for his britches.....or his house of that matter. Wild special effects and hijinks are all over this classic.

  • DCS: George of the Jungle

WATCH OUT FOR THAT quirky spin on the Tarzan story, it's "GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE" starring that 90's heartthrob, Brendan Fraser as the titular character who can soar through the tree's with the greatest of ease...while making it look oh so very hard.

Abandoned in the jungle as an infant, George grows up with a English speaking Ape, named Ape, (voiced by Monty Python alum, John Cleese), a dog-like Elephant called Shep and a colorful cast of ape's and birds alike, including the monkey from Ace Ventura! Yeah, life for the proclaimed King of Junble is pretty easy-going...but with the arrival of Ursula, a beautiful and adventurous City-dweller, George starts to feel stirrings unlike any before. But he'll have to contend with Ursula's egotistical, privileged fiancè Lyle, who feels threatened by the primitive, yet charming George. The movie is full of quirky humor and Brendan Fraser is delightful in the lead role...and those abs don't hurt. It was refreshing to take ina movie that wasn't afraid to not take itself seriously.

We hope you enjoy listening and we look forward to watching what you guys vote for us to watch next week.

    The choices are:

ENCHANTED - Amy Adams star in this early-2000's Disney movie that combines animation with live-action and was the company's first attempt to grapple with it's time-honored Princess tradition, while trying to be relevant and progressive. The princess Giselle finds herself whisked away to the unusual world of modern day New York. Will she be able to find a way back to her two-dimensional world of fantasy or will she be doomed to the harsh, real world?

EVER AFTER - A slightly more modern adaptation of the Cinderella story, starring Drew Barrymore as the vibrant step-daughter to an overbearing woman who seeks only to make her miserable in her servitude. But with the aid of a little magic, Danielle finally gets to feel what it is to realize her dreams and live happily...well, you get the idea.

  • DCS: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Prepare to enter a world where the line between physics and magic is very, very thin. A world in which Nicolas Cage is an apprentice to the greatest Wizard of all time: Merlin, and he is sportin' some blonde locks. A world in which the two leads have no chemistry and Jay Baruchel is given the opportunity to prove himself as a sorcerer and as a potential member of the Justice League of America (which was a potential series that has since been put on hold.) A world where even a seasoned actor such as Alfred Molina just can't get a handle on what kind of movie he is in. Welcome, fellow Disney Channel Surfers, to the world of "THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE."

Based on that super short segment in "Fantasia," which was the most watchable segment in that movie (along with "Night on Bald Mountain.) but the same can't be said for this 2010 live-action fantasy/adventure. The action sequences are well-executed and the concept of magic and science converging is a trope we enjoy. And, it goes without saying that Nicolas Cage is a delight to watch.

Centuries ago the three apprentices of Merlin (Balthazar, Horvath, Veronica.) had to battle the evil Morgana. Merlin was betrayed by one apprentice, Horvath, and the soul of Morgana was seized by Veronica who was unfortunately trapped within a small container called the Grimhold, trapped until such a time as Balthazar can locate the next Grand Merlinian; a hapless young man named Dave. And so the hunt for the Grimhold begins and we are treated to stunning visuals (for the time) and a whole lot of clunky scenes shared between actors who can't seem to connect. It is still a really fun watch and has some really promising concepts for fantasy fans. We hope you enjoy !

Be sure to vote for next week's episode. What would you like for us to watch?

THE JUNGLE BOOK (1994) - This was the first of Disney's live-action reimagining's of their animated classics. Bet you thought it was 101 Dalmations, didn't ya? This movie stars Jason Lee Scott who you might recognize as Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat movies and, in an uncharacteristically villainous role, Cary Elwes. The story of a boy raised by jungle animals finds himself thrust into the world of man when an old friend discovers him in the untamed land. Unable to accept his primitive nature, people start to try and civilize Mowgli but ultimately Mowgli must learn to accept both who he is and the world that surrounds him. This movie is filled with romance, fun and adventure. (Available on HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon.)

GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE (1997) - For a more unusual take on the whole "Jungle boy" story, we have this classic. Starring the beloved Brendan Frasier as the titular character, George, who was also raised in the jungle but by a far more quirky cast of characters including a elephant who behaves like a dog named Shep and a talking Ape named...Ape. George is discovered by a band of travelers and falls in love with the beautiful Ursula, who falls in love with our loin-cloth-wearing hero and must decide whether to follow her heart or her sense of duty, imposed on her by a couple of conservative parents and a jealous fiancé. The laughs are frequent and the style is very original.

  • DCS: The Christmas Toy

This one was suggested to us by friend of the show, Scott Martichuski, and it is a Jim Henson Christmas special called "The Christmas Toy." Starring some of the most adorable muppets ever (Rugby the Tiger, Mew the mouse) and some of the most horrifying muppets ever (Apple.) al together in one delightful playroom. We couldn't help but notice a lot of similarities between this heartfelt Christmas special and a certain groundbreaking computer-animated masterpiece that depicts a world of toys that come to life when people are absent from the room. Oh, there's also a delusional space-themed toy that has to grapple with identity. We were not quite prepared for how deep into existentialism this CHRISTMAS movie got but we were won over by the cute characters and the impressive puppetry, and it really did put us in the Christmas mood.

We were not familiar with this movie before recording and it was so nice to have our special guest host Nick there to help us grapple with exactly what we just saw and also relish in the heart-warming moments that are rampant throughout. Hope you enjoy and hope you can check out "Th e Christmas Toy" for yourself on Amazon Prime.

  • DCS: Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas

Gather 'round the Christmas tree with us as we review and reminisce about "Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas" in which we are treated to three delightful Christmas stories starring some of our favorite Disney characters. This is one of the last times we would see Mickey and the gang in traditionally animated glory.

The stories includes two Disney adaptations of familiar Christmas tales, one starring Donald and his nephews who wish for Christmas EVERY DAY. Mickey and Minnie star in their version of the Christmas of the Magi. Goofy and Max struggle to deliver a letter to Santa on time and Max starts to question a certain Christmas Tradition. In rewatching, we were reminded of just how much of a highlight this was in our Christmas Movie Rotation growing up.

  • DCS: Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas

We are getting into the Christmas spirit with this Dark yet hopeful Disney Animated...Midquel(?): "Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas."

When we last left Belle, the curse over the castle of a Beast, who turned out to be a prince, was lifted and she was able to live happily ever after with the reformed monarch along with all her new friends. Well, as a follow-up to that beloved Disney classic, they decided to set the story in the midst of Belle's IMPRISONMENT at the cursed castle, shortly following her encounter with a pack of wild wolves. Oh, and it's Christmas-time. As Belle tries to spread hope and joy during the festive season, The Beast is desperate to avoid all Christmas traditions as it only serves to remind him of the past, when the curse was first bestowed upon the castle and all its inhabitants. We are also treated to a new cast of characters including a imposing villainous Pipe Organ played by Tim Curry.

It may very well be one of the darkest Christmas movies ever conceived by Disney, but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy it. Hope you do as well!

  • DCS: Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

It's our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been so much fun finding our footing and riding the waves of nostalgia with all you amazing listeners.

This week, kicking off Season Three, we watched "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" starring Rick Moranis as an inventor father who creates a shrink ray which accidentally reduces his kids and the neighbor's kids down to the size of dust mites. In typical 80's/90's movie fashion, we have plenty of kids in peril and Jim Carrey-inspired performances all set against some masterfully executed set's and stop-motion animation at it's finest.
