The NPA has referred the Life Esidimeni docket for a formal inquest before a judge in the High Court in Pretoria. This comes three years after the Esidimeni tragedy in which 144 people died. Many of them died of starvation and neglect after the Gauteng Health Department cancelled their contract with Life Esidimeni, resulting in thousands of patients being transferred to facilities that were not licensed.

Yesterday, former apartheid police officer Joao Rodrigues lost another application he had filed in an attempt to have his prosecution for the murder of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol stayed. On the other hand, the Foundation for Human Rights has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s dismissal of his appeal. The Foundation has been actively supporting the quest for justice in the Timol case since the reopening of the inquest into his death in 2017.

The Gauteng department of education has confirmed that a Grade 6 learner was shot dead outside a primary school in Katlehong this morning. The shooting took place outside Izibuko Primary School to be precise.

Today the KwaZulu Natal Education department launched the schools safety campaign aimed at bringing about safety and security in schools across the province. 3000 newly appointed Schools Safety Volunteers will be deployed at various schools throughout the province and the Schools Safety Committees will be established.

Yesterday the South Gauteng High Court ruled that parts of the RICA act are inconsistent with the constitution. The case was brought by the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism after confirming that security officials had spied on the communications of one of its journalists. Sam Sole is one of the journalists whose communication was intercepted while he was reporting on the corruption investigation against then President Jacob Zuma.

The SA Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by recent utterances attributed to Julius Malema. Following Mugabe's death on September 6, Malema posted a slideshow of Mugabe quotes, hashtagged #Gushungo, after Mugabe's family totem. One of the slides read: "The only white man you can trust is a dead white man." The Commission is of the view that the social media utterances by Malema around former President Robert Mugabe’s passing away, on a prima facie basis, amount to hate speech.
