Today the world marks International Day of the Girl which is observed annually on the 11th of October to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. According to new calculations by UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring Report, substantial progress has been made in ensuring equal numbers of girls and boys in school with 50 million more girls enrolling in school since 2015. The exception to this success includes Sub-Saharan Africa - where girls remain far less likely to go to school  at any education level. Over half of all children out of primary and secondary school are in Africa.

South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it has received numerous complaints stemming in part from the public relations stunt staged earlier in the week at the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield campus. The youth wing of civil rights organisation AfriForum has claimed responsibility, saying their intention was to put the spotlight on what they call racial exclusion and the university’s double standards.

South African murder accused Dr Nandipha Magudumana reportedly collapsed in the police holding cells at parkroad police station in Bloemfontein ahead of her court appearance earlier. ROAD TO 2024 ELECTIONS: With less than seven months to go before next year’s general elections. ActionSA has announced the son of former Bophuthatswana Chief Minister Lucas Mangope, Kgosi Kwena Mangope as its premier candidate for the North-West province. Mangope has warmly accepted the nomination, also promising to fix dysfunctional municipalities in the province should he be elected.
