Today is the eve of a march that will take place in Mthatha calling for justice following the murder of Namhla Mtwa. Different organisations, government officials including Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane as well as community members will take to the streets on Wednesday. Namhla Mtwa was shot nine times in her driveway in April and no arrests have been made. Her sister, Sanga Nozinga took to social media, sharing screenshots of her bruised body after many instances of abuse, allegedly by her boyfriend who has denied knowing anything about her shooting. Many people, including men in her life knew about Namhla’s plight, but nothing was done about it. I asked yesterday, how should men respond to gender based violence. We have seen many marches of this nature, but the number of women being killed keeps increasing at an alarming rate.

Finally there is some movement in relation to the Bushiri matter. The department of home affairs has dismissed Ronney Marhule, the Chief Director for Permitting who recommended that prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his family be granted permanent residence permits. Marhule, was found guilty on two counts of gross dishonesty and gross negligence after a protracted disciplinary hearing.

Yet another for blow for the South Africa entertainment industry, actor Jamie Bartlett, or as many call him, David Genaro has died. Bartlett died on Monday at the age of 55. His career in the film industry spans over 30 years, with experience both in theatre, films as well as soapies. His recent work includes Rhythm City where he played villain, David Genaro and SABC’s Isidingo. The Supreme Court of Appeals has ruled in favour of Zimbabwean farmers in a case they have been pursuing against the South African government. It says President Jacob Zuma unlawfully closed an avenue for white farmers from Zimbabwe to seek justice when he closed the SADC tribunal. The High Court in Pretoria ruled in 2020 that there was no causal link between the damage white Zimbabwean farmers suffered as a result of South Africa’s role in the termination of the SADC tribunal and the actual harm they suffered. As a result of this ruling, the South African government could face a R2.5 billion compensation payout to over 200 white Zimbabwean farmers.

Yet another mass shooting in Khayelitsha just two weeks after the last one we reported on. This time, three siblings from Ekuphumleni in Khayelitsha were shot dead on Sunday night. Two men allegedly stormed their home and fired several shots killing two men and a woman. Earlier this month, six people were killed in Khayelitsha and their murders were alleged to be in connection with extortions in the area. How is the government dealing with these murders?

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases has warned South Africans traveling out of the country to be cautious as monkeypox cases seem to be increasing in different parts of the world. While there are no cases in South Africa yet, the organization says there is a risk for travelers. NICD is advising those who are traveling to and from endemic areas to report any illness upon return to the country. Cases of Monkeypox have been recorded in different parts of Europe, the US as well as the UK.

Former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize seems to be making his political comeback. Dr Mkhize resigned in August last year after being implicated in the Digital Vibez Scandal. When he stepped down, he said he was doing so in order to bring certainty and stability to the health portfolio. He was recently cleared from wrongdoing by a parliamentary committee. A group of traditional leaders who attended his son’s wedding this past weekend took to the podium to endorse Mkhize’s ANC presidential bid. In response, Mkhize said he would availed himself if ANC branches saw it fit.
