So, what is Monkeypox and should we be worried about it? There are reports of an outbreak of a viral disease that has been detected in the UK, US and parts of Europe including Portugal and Spain. The disease transmits through close contact and was first detected in monkeys. The virus causes fever symptoms and a bumpy rash and has two strains with origins in DRC and parts of West Africa. We are still reeling from the spread of Covid-19. What do we know about this and should we be worried?

How should universities respond to sexual violence that happens on their campuses. A UCT student alleges she was raped by a professor, and claims the university has been silencing her. In response to the allegations, UCT Vice Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi said the student has refused help from the university and there should say what her real agenda is. A statement that caused uproar on social media. The university says the alleged perpetrator is a joint staff member in a partnership with the Western Cape Government Health and an investigation is underway. Spain intends to introduce medical leave for women who suffer from severe period pains and if they succeed, they will become the first country in Europe to do so. The proposal comes amid a campaign by feminists worldwide to demolish taboos around periods, but it has drawn criticism from Spanish unions, who warn that menstrual leave could prompt employers to prioritise men when hiring.

Some great news for South African journalism and one of our own here at SABC. Morning Live Anchor Leanne Manas has been bestowed with a National Order of Merit for her contribution to South African journalism. On Tuesday she was honoured with the Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron. This is in recognition of her role she has played in advancing journalism, media as well as charitable causes.

Police are investigating two Pretoria teachers who were caught on camera hitting toddlers at a crèche in Pretoria. In the video that has cause uproar on social media, a mother and her daughter who teach at Darwin’s Educational Playground Aftercare are seen manhandling and beating toddlers. The video was recorded by another teacher at the school. Parents of the children have removed them from the school and opened a case. We are now joined by Basic Education Spokesperson, Steve Mabona.

Eastern Cape Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects following a shooting that left six people wounded and one person dead at the Mdantsane Highway taxi rank. It is alleged the two suspects shot at a car with two occupants. One of the occupants died, while the other sustained injuries. Five other people who were at the taxi rank were hit by stray bullets. For more details on that we are now joined by police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana.

In recognition of Africa month, government will host a discussion on Thursday. The panel discussion is themed ‘Advancing Patriotism, Social Cohesion and Citizenry Rights to SafeGuard South Africa and its Institutions”. The discussion seeks to appeal to South Africans to find solutions to some of the issues that make social cohesion hard in the country and raise awareness on the importance of patriotism. How does one unite a country that’s characterized by the variety of issues South Africa is dealing with? The weekly status of reservoirs released by the Department of Water and Sanitation this week demonstrate a recurrent downswing of water levels compared to same period last week. The Department of Water and Sanitation is once again pleading with members of the public to utilise water with caution since we are at the dawn of winter season.

Earlier on today, Swazi Solidarity Network together with United Eswatini Diaspora picketed outside Milk Park hospital where eSwatini’s Queen mother and the King’s daughter are currently receiving medical treatment. Their demand is that South African hospitals should not assist them as King Mswati is responsible for collapsing eSwatini’s healthcare system.
