It is not the first time Stellenbosch University is in hot water over racism experienced by students on their campus. Many have been asking why the university hasn’t already expelled Theuns du Toit after he urinated over a black student’s belongings. Student organisations have condemned the incident and are calling for an expulsion. The university has suspended du Toit as it investigates the incident, but many say there’s no need to investigate. Many other previously white institutions have been in trouble for racism as well. What do these universities need to do to create an environment that is safe for students who are not white? The Congress of South African Trade Unions is condemning the department of Arts and Culture’s plan to spend R22 million on a national monument flag project. The 100-meter flag at the Freedom Park Heritage site. The department says it will not only be a tourist attraction, but it will serve as a symbol of unity. The criminal case involving military veterans who allegedly held senior government officials hostage in October last year has been withdrawn. Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt following a one-hour hostage of medical staff who got a fake emergency call. The medical staff attended to a call about a woman who was giving birth at a farm near Belfast, however, on arrival they were attacked. Their ambulance was driven to a different location where it was stripped and its parts were loaded into another vehicle. Eskom has revealed that Bronkhorstspruit Regional Court recently sentenced two cable thieves that were arrested for stealing over four kilometres of Eskom’s aluminium cables in 2018 to over a decade in prison. That’s big news because the theft of cables, transformers, overhead lines, and conductors costs the power utility around R2 billion each year.

Several media reports in the U.S suggest that former president Donald Trump has signed an exclusivity clause with Truth Social. According to the terms of the licensing agreement between Trump and Trump Media & Technology Group, after posting on Truth Social, Trump cannot post on any other social platform for six hours. You may recall that Trump was permanently banned from Twitter and other large social media sites after he was accused of fomenting violence at the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa is threatening a full blown strike if the City of Tshwane does not meet its demands. The trade union is demanding a transport allowance for workers contracted to Xtremetec, Tshwane Rapid Transit and Tshwane Affected Investment Operation. The workers downed tools last week, halting bus services. They are asking for a R2 500 transport allowance, R60 per hour night shift allowance and medical aid cover. The City of Tshwane also says it may ask its contractors to interdict Numsa members should their strike intensify this week.
