The Cape Town Magistrates Court has ruled that Zandile Mafe, who is accused for torching parliament, be referred to a mental institution for 30 days for mental observation. He will be back in court on the 11th of February. The state had submitted to court a medical report which diagnosed him with a condition called paranoid schizophrenia. The defence objected to the medical report "as an ambush" as it was made available to them this morning. Magistrate Zamekile Mbalo ruled that Mafe be detained at Pollsmoor prison until a bed is available at Valkenberg Psychiatric hospital.
