How do people actually change?

For Christians, lasting change is not simply about developing better habits, thinking more positively, managing behavior, or trying harder.

The Bible describes genuine Christian change through the doctrine of sanctification.

In Episode 372 of The Nehemiah Project Podcast, we take a thorough look at what sanctification is, how it works, and how God transforms believers over the course of the Christian life.

Sanctification begins with salvation.

When a person is born again through faith in Jesus Christ, God gives that person a new heart and a new identity. The believer is no longer enslaved to sin in the same way and is now able to understand, love, and obey the truth of God’s Word.

But conversion is not the end of change.

It is the beginning of a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ.

Sanctification is the ongoing work of God in the life of a believer by which Christians progressively grow in holiness and become more like Jesus Christ.

It involves both God’s work in us and our active response of faith and obedience.

Biblical change is not passive.

Christians are called to:

• Put off sinful thoughts, desires, and behaviors
• Renew the mind through the truth of Scripture
• Put on righteous thoughts, desires, and actions
• Repent when sin is exposed
• Believe what God has said
• Practice obedience
• Grow in Christlike character
• Persevere in faith

This pattern is central to understanding how Christians actually change.

Romans 12:2 calls believers to be transformed by the renewing of the mind.

Renewal is more than replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.

It means learning to think according to the truth of God’s Word and increasingly bringing our thoughts, desires, emotions, and decisions under the authority of Christ.

The Christian has been given the mind of Christ through salvation, and then grows into that reality through the daily study, memorization, meditation, and application of Scripture.

Real change happens as God’s truth reshapes the way we think and live.

The Bible does not merely tell Christians to stop sinful behavior.

It calls us to replace sinful patterns with righteous ones.

That means sanctification involves:

Putting off what belongs to the old way of life.

Renewing the mind with biblical truth.

Putting on attitudes and actions that reflect Jesus Christ.

This is why biblical counseling is concerned with more than symptom relief.

The goal is not simply to make life easier.

The goal is to help people become more like Christ.

Behavior matters, but behavior flows from the heart.

Our actions are connected to what we believe, desire, worship, fear, love, and trust.

That is why lasting transformation requires more than external behavior modification.

God changes people from the inside out through His Word, His Spirit, and the ordinary means He has given His church.

What is really happening beneath the symptoms of post-traumatic stress?

Dallas speaks candidly about the progression of addiction—from initially pursuing drugs for pleasure, escape, or a high to eventually becoming physically dependent on them simply to feel normal and function from day to day.

Beneath the behavior are desires of the heart—things we look to for satisfaction, escape, comfort, identity, or control. Scripture helps us understand how those desires can become idolatrous and enslaving, while also recognizing the very real physical effects and dependence associated with substance abuse.

But Dallas’s story is ultimately not about addiction.
