  • #136 Dena Crowder: Inner Power Craves Purpose

    Show Notes

Today I am excited to have with us once again my personal life coach, Dena Crowder. Dena is amazing! After working together for two years now, I can’t think of anyone that has impacted my life the ways Dena Crowder has. Her wisdom and insight equals that of sages.

Now… the last time Dena was on the show we talked about dealing with our Inner Critic. Well, today we are taking the opposite direction and talking about our Inner Power and how our Inner Power Craves Purpose. I can’t wait to get into the subject. In fact, it was the topic of our last enormously impactful coaching session. I have so much to learn from Dena.

For those of you that don’t know, Dena Crowder is a High-Performance Strategist and Chief Spiritual Officer for creators and leaders. She has designed innovative programs for prison parolees, judges associations, CEOs, CNN heroes, Emmy and Grammy winners, as well as executives at many organizations the likes of which include Nike, Disney, Nestle, and Fox.

In addition, most recently Dena had the rare honor to give a presentation at a TED X conference that was highly received with a standing ovation. Her topic, naturally, was on Power.

In fact, Dena is on a mission to revolutionize the way the world understands and relates to Power. Her aim is to Redefine Power so that we use it for good. Dena believes—and I love this—that "Pure Power" is the capacity to directly influence and manage your life… with wisdom and compassion. If only… it’s all about “Power To” and not “Power Over.”

  • #135 Fr Robert Edwards Advent Week IV: Peace

    Show Notes

Today we plan to delve into the depths of our souls as we ponder the most important aspects Christmas, which is the incarnation of the Christ and how he has impacted the entire world.

Now, today begins 4th and final episode on Advent with Fr Robert Edwards of St Margaret’s Episcopal Church. The reason for the shows on Advent is to add clarity on the importance of the arrival of Jesus, his teaching, his actions, and his saving grace.

In the last three shows we have talked about how the coming of Jesus brought light into a world of darkness, the humility of the man and how humility is needed for all of us, and thirdly on Hope which was my favorite episode thus far. One thing Jesus brought to the world was hope, something we all desire to feel in our hearts.

Today, I want to talk about what I consider the most under-stated and yet most important gifts that Jesus brought into the world is Peace. I believe that peace may perhaps be the most desperate longing of every single person in the world.

When the angels appeared to the shepherds at the birth of Jesus one of the things they proclaimed, was “Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth toward mankind…”

And yet Peace is a much-ignored topic in Bible discussions. I want to change that today with Fr Roberts Edwards of St Margaret’s Episcopal Church in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

  • #134 Fr Robert Edwards Advent Week III: Hope

    Show Notes

Now, today begins our 3rd of 4 episodes on Advent with Fr Robert Edwards of St Margaret’s Episcopal Church. In our time here together, Fr Rob and I are reflecting on the cosmic wonder of Advent, which celebrates the arrival of the Universal Christ in the bodily form of the man, Jesus.

Our objective for the shows on Advent is to help us understand the difference Jesus has made on the lives of hundreds of millions people—in our normal everyday lives, as well as directly impacting our sense of spirituality.

In the last two sessions Robert and I talked about the influence of Jesus as he brought light into a world of darkness and then we discussed the humble means by which he both lived and taught, leading us, as well, to a spirit of humility—all in an effort to be more like Jesus.

Today I plan to take us in the direction of one of the primary emphases of Advent; and that is life-altering gift of Hope. For this season, in the Episcopal Church we adorn the priest and alter with the color blue, which represents Hope.

It has occurred to me that although hope has historically been represented by some desire for a contented life, in last couple of decades I have read of many challenges to the notion of hope—some saying that it too often ends in disappointment. A most pessimistic view of life. We will most certainly talk about this, but first I’d like to welcome Fr Rob back to the show

  • #133 Fr Robert Edwards Advent Week II: Humility

    Show Notes

Today begins our 2nd show with Fr Robert Edwards of St Margaret’s Episcopal Church. We are having a discussion on the 4 weeks of Advent. Since Advent celebrates the coming or arrival of the Christ in the bodily form of Jesus, the man, I think this is a perfect opportunity to examine how the birth of Jesus has impacted all humanity for the past 2000 years or so.

On the last show we discussed the idea of how, in order to receive light, there must first be darkness—physical, emotional and spiritual. In the holy text it says of Jesus, “out of darkness came the light” and in another place it says he was the light of the world.

In this series I like to chat about just a few ways that Jesus is the light of the world. How did his behaviors and his teachings impact the world forever? Today I would like to begin with the virtue of humility.

The story obviously begins with his humble birth, continues with a most humble lifestyle, and ends with a humiliating death alongside of criminals. The life of Jesus reflects profound humility—as we also find in many other great teachers and philosophers.

So let’s begin by welcoming my dear friend Father Robert Edwards to the show. Fr Rob… what’s up on this beautiful rainy day in So California?

  • #132 Fr Rob Advent Week 1: Darkness to Light

    Show Notes

People will often ask me, “What is your podcast about?” I usually say something like, “Well… it’s all about how you might take on the next chapter to your life, whatever that may be.” I then laugh and say, “Truthfully, the show really is all about whatever I feel like discussing with a given guest.”

And today is no exception. Today I will begin a 4-week series on the most exciting subject of Advent, all recorded during the Advent season of 2019. Now I now advent is not top of mind for anyone, save clergy and I am not even convinced of that. But I hope you find this series to be interesting, informing and, most of all, important to you personally. It is to me!

Advent is a season celebrated during the month of December mostly by liturgical churches such as Catholic, Orthodox, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian. Funny thing though: many, if not most, church attenders have little (or no) idea of what Advent is all about except for the lighting of 4 candles—one each week of Advent, ending on Christmas week.

I’m sure many of you are asking, “How in the world can I listen to four sessions on Advent?” Well, we’ll have to see how it goes but the plan sounds really good as we will talk about how the coming of Jesus, the Christ, has impacted our world for more than 2,000 years.

For this series I coerced my dear friend Fr Robert Edwards to do 4 shows with me, in one of the busiest seasons on the church calendar. Fr Robert Edwards is the Rector (or lead minister) of St Margaret’s Episcopal Church in San Juan Capistrano, CA—which is my home church.

With all that, let’s jump right into our show and see what comes up

  • #131 Terry Hershey: This Is the Life

    Show Notes

Guess what? Our good friend Terry Hershey has a new book titled “This Is the Life.” I just received a copy a couple days ago and have read through it. It is really good. I think the subtitle explains much about the content: The full title reads, “This Is the Life: Mindfulness, Finding Grace and the Power of the Present Moment.”

I know much has been written on mindfulness and living in the present, but Terry indeed offers a fresh perspective on the subject. For me, it is NOT so much a “how to” book and is it a “why to” book. I found the book a most refreshing read attempting to restore us from our frenetic, hectic and chaotic daily lives.

It is filled with stories, anecdotes, and references to masters, especially in the spiritual world. And by spiritual I am not talking about religion but about otherworldliness. Personally I a much attracted to the notion of finding grace in the power of the present moment.

But most of us that reside in cities and suburbs are inundated with a driving need to accomplish, “to add value, ”to be forward thinking, and then, unfortunately, to raise our children to follow the same lifestyle.

But I am giving away too much of our content for discussion today. For those few listeners that are not familiar with Terry Hershey he is a most popular public speaker—in fact I consider Terry to be one the most enjoyable and impactful pubic speakers I have ever heard. He is also, obviously, an author of more than a dozen books, and landscape architect and probably most importantly a gardener (of a 2 acre garden) in which he cares for diligently and with great grace and devotion.

  • #130 Will Crist - Transitions and Life Goals

    Show Notes

I believe our show today is the most unusual one I have ever done. The reason is, I know almost nothing about our guest today, Will Crist, except that we have experienced some similar paths in our background. He is a priest; I was a minister. He is a consultant and executive coach; I was a consultant and executive coach; and he currently has his own podcast titled, “The Pilgrim on the 405.”

So you get to be part of an unrehearsed and almost totally unprepared conversation between two guys who have experienced life through three similar and unique combinations of life choices.

So let’s discover what Will Crist and Charlie Hedges have in common as well as discovering the wonder of how similarities are, at the same time, naturally unique and distinct.

    So… let’s do it.

  • #129 Charlie- Where Do You Reside: Past, Present or Future?

    Show Notes

Hi Paul, it’s good to be here with you once again at OC Talk Radio.

In today’s show I intend you and I get a bit philosophical. I’d like to explore the inter-relationship of past, present and future. Although we technically life in the present… it is fleeting and can always change (sometimes drastically) almost in an instant.

When you think a bit about it, it is crazy. The present is instantly becoming the past as it coincidently almost immediately turns out to be the future as well.

I look at it this way: the past informs our actions in the present and future, the present is the action, and the future is about hope or regret.

So without much introduction, let’s get into the subject.

  • #127 Charlie: An International Crisis-Diarrhea and Infant Mortality

    Show Notes

Today’s show will be a bit different from our normal “interview” format. Today I want to talk about how to begin saving the lives of more than 800,000 children under 5 worldwide. Although my focus will be on the country of Uganda win which I have worked for the last 3 years.

Last night I was watching a documentary on Netflix, titled “Decoding Bill’s Brain,” which is all about Bill Gates. While I thought the documentary would be kind of an overview of Bill Gates’ accomplishments a neuro-processes, it turned out to be quite different.

About half the show was on how Bill thinks and processes data, but the other half of the show was about a subject very dear to me personally: Diarrhea and Infant Mortality, which is a primary area of focus for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill Gates, who seems to read about 15 books per week, discovered that Diarrhea kills approximately 2200 children every day—more than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. That’s 800,000 children that die every year due to diarrhea.
