AK shares how she went from being named Officer of the Year to burned out, depressed, and having suicidal ideations...all within a few months. She also shares how she chose herself and LIFE over the job and what it was doing to her.

AK left LE without a plan and while it's not ideal, something most say they could ever do...when it becomes a matter of life and death, you have to do what you have to do.

AK shares how her experience in LE and the transition out of LE allows her to now serve first responders and help them prevent/navigate the pitfalls she experienced, as well as how to overcome them.

This week I am throwing it back to an episode recorded last year, when the Next Shift Podcast didn't even exist! I was just doing Zooms with officer's who'd transitioned out of the field and sharing them on social media, to get the word out there that there IS life after Law Enforcement.

Ryan has an infectious personality that really showed through as he talked about his transition from LEO to Financial Services Industry to entrepreneur. He deems himself a personal development expert and in this episode, he chats not only about his decision to leave LE, but to start his own coaching business. The day we chatted was actually his first day working for himself!

This weeks episode is SHORT and is a brief explanation of why there was no new episode last week, as well as a reminder of how life will TRY to knock you down from time to time, but you CAN get back up.

Life threw a major gut punch at us on 2/29/24, when my husband's co-worker and friend was killed in the LOD. While all LEO deaths are hard...this one was the first time it's been personal and someone we actually know. It hits different and I am finding myself thinking about it and grieving from so many standpoints...making it that much harder.

I still think like a cop a LOT and RARELY like (or about being) a police wife...it's an identity crisis for sure...but this past couple weeks, I've thought and talked like both, which is exhausting! I do NOT have much to give right now, which is why this episode is short and I am re-evaluating the flow of episode releases...as well as the number of calls I book each week.

This past couple weeks has truly rocked me to my core and I am open to talking about it because I KNOW there is someone out there  who needs to see/hear someone else fighting through the shit to KNOW they can too. I am not sure if/when I will "get back to normal," but I WILL keep going and doing the best that I can each day...which is all any of us can do, EVER!

I will say, GRATITUDE (even in the WORST of times) has helped so much! I am thankful for daily habits I've developed in the good times...they definitely help me get through the bad and even the unthinkable. You know those people you meet and you're like, "Yeah...you're my people."?

Well, Travis Gribble is one of those people...even though we've only "met" virtually. It's so weird to have a whole network of prior LEOs to connect with, because 8 years ago, when I got out....there was NO SUCH THING!

In this episode we chat about Travis' transition from a small department to a larger department and what that was like. We dive into the reason for his transition out of law enforcement, retirement due to PTSD, and they things he did to help himself through that time. We touch on what he is doing now with his company, My Arena, to help other first responders.

This week's episode is a unique episode, in that I interviewed two people at the same time...for the first time. And since I will be doing a LIVE web event on 2/19 with these guests, I figured it was a great time to share their episode!

I "met" Terry Owens when he reached out on LinkedIn and invited me to a local ASIS event in Kansas City, which made me want to interview him for the podcast and he agreed, but asked if a buddy, Mike Betten, could join in. I told him I hadn't done a dual interview, but was down to give it a whirl...and I am so glad I did! These two clearly have a special bond and were a blast to chat with.

Both have transitioned into the Corporate Security realm and are active members of the Kansas City ASIS chapter, where Mike assists others with studying for exams.

Mike is retired from the Overland Park, KS Police Department, has been an adjunct professor, and is currently the Director of Security  at Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

Terry is retired from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, has served as Loss Prevention Coordinator, and is currently the Director of Security at Shamrock Trading Corporation. 

Both share their transition stories in this episode and about what it means to be apart of ASIS. Make sure to give both of them a follow and reach out to them with any questions you may have about Corporate Security or ASIS.

Hello and welcome back to the Next Shift Podcast, season 2! 

This is a SHORT episode that talks about what to expect this season...
- More lessons learned from me
- The spouses perspective of the LEOs transition
- Resources  for those still in and going through the transition
- Wider variety of transition stories (ie. retired, medically retired, voluntary)

Part of the motivation for bringing in the spouse perspective, is it's one not talked about nearly enough and the transition, especially if unexpected is HARD AF on them as well..."they just don't get it," is NOT an excuse we can keep using. 

Another part came from an ah ha moment during another podcast interview I did, where we were discussing how the family unit is NOT a priority for MOST police departments and it needs to be. Take care of your people and remember they are humans and they in turn will take care of "you," the department and community.

For something I NEVER dreamed of doing...the past 6 months of hosting this podcast was one of the TOP highlights of 2023!

From the people I got to "meet" and interview to the countless numbers of messages I got after each episodes about how it helped someone...my heart is full and that is why I am ending season 1 on a high note and the first day of 2024!
