How important are WA’s heritage listed buildings and what's involved in maintaining them?

discuss the art of architecture. 

On Perth Tonight Chris Ilsley asked you where you were in 1968 when the earthquake rocked Meckering at 10:59am on Monday the 14th of October?

Maria told Chris she was working at the Northam telephone exchange which prompted Maureen - who was the officer in charge of the telephone exchange in Northam at the time - to call.

Despite not hearing Maria's voice for 35 years Maureen still remembers her. 

On Perth Tonight Chris spoke to Geoscience Australia structural engineer Mark Edwards.

He's spent this week surveying the Heritage listed buildings of York, one of the most seismically active areas in Australia, to minimise damage in the very likely event of an earthquake.

What were you doing when the Meckering earth quake hit in 1968?

Residents living at Australia’s strictest drug rehabilitation centre may be "thrown out on the street" as one of the properties currently housing them is up for sale. 

Founder of Shalom House and councillor at The City of Swan Peter Lyndon-James told Chris he was "in a bit of a pickle" trying to find housing for the 36 recovering drug addicts.

Mr Lyndon-James said the sale of the house would mean three years of court battles over the future of the Shalom House will have been a waste of time and rate payers’ money.

Holding back tears he explained he was dealing with devastated families.

"I've got a bunch of bureaucrats ... and they spend $300,000 a day in that one day hearing and meanwhile I have families being destroyed," he said. 

The 5th annual National Elder Abuse Conference wrapped up in Sydney today.

During the Conference Attorney-General Christian Porter announced a national plan to stop physical, emotional and financial abuse of the elderly.

Chris spoke to the Chief Executive of Councils on the Aging (COTA) national peak body Ian Yates about the proposed plan.

The verdicts out – research published in Marine Policy found that cash for container deposits directly reduce the amount of beverage containers in the ocean by 40%.

WA will begin the scheme in 2019 in the hopes of reducing the estimated 8 million metric tonnes of plastic that end up in the ocean every year.
