Today on the Nila Extract, we welcome Amber Monet, one of the first Menstrual Cycle Coaches in the world, who is dedicated to ensuring the achievement of menstrual equity and equality on a global scale. We delve into the representation of periods in the media, and the illicit tone which contributes to the furthering of stigmas and taboos in association with menstrual cycles. Amber and I look into the tampon tax, our personal experiences, the shame enforced on women due to societal pressures, along with misconceptions about periods (Are you so sure that you and your mates are synced-up sisters?).
We also assess economic and global issues, including period poverty and the lack of accessibility people have to sanitary products. On a more festive note, let’s get into the holiday spirit by listening to some of the Christmas songs I played this week!
The Nila Extract is an award-winning radio show hosted by your favourite Tamil gal, Nila Varman, who strives to amplify the voices of marginalised communities by dispelling taboos, having socio-political conversations, and inviting activists, celebrities and advocates, to speak on their personal experiences.
