There's a common misunderstanding about what foods do & don't contain gluten and which foods are wheat-based. When doing a gluten or wheat elimination diet, knowing what's in your food is CRUCIAL for seeing if the food trigger is correct & getting to you a symptom-free state. Read those food labels, fam!
Not mentioned in the episode, but important:
Wheat extracts are also found in a number of food additives – for example:

The Nuanced Naturopaths Podcast is a friendly conversation between two friends, that’s us! Karinda and Julie. we’re passionate about finding the nuance in natural health. As degree-qualified naturopaths, we like to ask the questions that need to be asked - about all aspects of health, healing and well-being. We delight in questioning firmly held beliefs and finding the nuance in all subjects health-related and beyond. Sometimes it can get a little technical but hopefully we explain in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in natural health, whether you’re a practitioner or someone who wants to learn more and optimise your wellbeing. It’s a chat about poop, periods and everything in between - buckle up for a laugh, a cry and for some things you are yet to consider about your health!

What's the difference between wheat & gluten? What's the difference between an allergy and intolerance? How can you tell if you're being affected by gluten or wheat? Should I get tested for Coeliac's disease?
We cover all this (and more!) in today's chunky episode. A must-listen for anyone with sensitive stomachs, recurring gut issues or allergy-like tendencies.

This is a fun twist to our usual kind of podcast! Do you resonate with Jessica's story? Seeing these hormonal symptoms along with chronic gut issues are all too common in the naturopath's office, and they're often linked. If you'd love to get to the bottom of your own hormonal & gut health love affair (that isn't working out too well), we'd love to hear from you. Get in touch!

The message I (Karinda) sent to Julie when proposing this episode, laying in bed at 11pm one night: "I’d love to do a low key, fun podcast about all the health ads that piss me/us off, and refute them from a naturopathic standpoint." I think that's enough background for this ep!

Julie’s VicHerbs debut. With 2 trips to Bali this year already, Julie was fascinated to learn about the local traditional medicines and fell in love with Jamu (which is both a drink and a system of medicine). Not claiming to be an expert, she would like to share her observations and insights into the herbal medicine of Bali, specific herbs and their uses. We can learn a lot from the beautiful Balinese people and how their connections to culture, herbal medicine, nature and spirituality permeate and intersect every part of their lives. Prepare for a deep dive into (the many) turmerics and gingers, tamarind and ‘fart leaf’... and more, how their cultural beliefs and practices help to reduce stress and the blurred lines between food and medicine.
There will be a herbal handout, and freshly made tastings of the amazing turmeric and ginger drink-based tonic, Jamu on the night!
WHERE:
Bargoonga Nganjin
North Fitzroy Library
WHEN:
This Thursday, 22nd June @ 7:30pm
We'd love to see you there!
Come see Julie's talk for VicHerbs next Thursday, all about Balinese herbal medicine! Including Jamu taste testing! Tickets available here, or cash-only tickets at the door. 22nd June at 7:30pm in North Fitzroy.
Inspired by a casual cafe chat pre-recording, Julie & Karinda dive into the potentially controversial topic of how we relate to labels when it comes to health (namely, diagnostic labels). Why do we attach to labels? Is it helpful, harmful or somewhere in between? And what does shame have to do with receiving a diagnosis? We cover it all in this minisode snippet of the Nuanced Naturopaths.

Yes, you DO need to poop daily, and that's the last we'll hear on that, thanks! Also in this ep: hear our naturopathic breakdown on (and love affair we have with) fibre.

Iron is one heck of a nuanced topic. Especially when it comes to iron deficiency. It's not as simple as grabbing iron from the chemist or getting an iron infusion, et voila, iron deficiency cured! There is a cause for your iron deficiency, and there is a very nuanced way to treat it. Tune into our naturopathic breakdown on everything iron. And check out Part 2 in Episode 10!
