Plura Cave Deaths (2014): Five professional divers decided to make one of the most difficult cave dives… the entirety of Plura Cave in Rana, Norway. Two Finnish divers met tragic ends. Their bodies were initially deemed too dangerous to retrieve, but four of their friends undertook a risky mission to recover them. Cave diving, by its very nature, offers little margin for error. A sudden incapacitation in a confined, overhead environment, far from immediate assistance, can quickly turn fatal.

On November 1, 2020, 18-year-old Linnea Rose Mills, was preparing for a training dive. She was a newly certified PADI Open Water Diver, eager to continue her education with an advanced open water course.  But this dive was different. The location was extreme. Linnea was about to experience her first time in a dry suit, a necessary piece of equipment for where she would be diving, the frigid waters of Lake McDonald. Due to extreme negligence by her dive school, the dive quickly turned into a tragic accident.

The attack was witnessed by her husband and four children from the shore, making it a particularly horrifying and well-documented event.

Linda Carman (2016): An alleged double murder. Nathan Carman was rescued from a life raft off the coast of New England after his boat sank during a fishing trip with his mother, Linda, who was never found. Authorities later alleged that Nathan killed his mother at sea to inherit the family estate, and that he may have also killed his grandfather. Nathan denied the charges, and his case never went to trial as he took his own life in jail in 2023.

Palmyra Atoll Murders (1974): This isolated and complex case involved the disappearance and murder of Malcolm and Eleanor Graham, who were sailing their yacht, the "Sea Wind," in the Pacific. Another couple, Buck Walker and Stephanie Stearns, later arrived in Hawaii aboard the Grahams' yacht. Years later, Eleanor Graham's remains were discovered on Palmyra Atoll. Walker was convicted of her murder, while Stearns was acquitted. Vincent Bugliosi, who prosecuted Charles Manson, wrote a book about the case titled "And the Sea Will Tell."

The Bluebelle (1961): This horrific true crime case involved the murder of the entire Duperrault family at sea by the boat's captain, Julian Harvey. Harvey allegedly killed his wife and the Duperrault family aboard the ship "Bluebelle" and then deliberately sank the boat, all for insurance money. The sole survivor, 11-year-old Terry Jo Duperrault, was found adrift on a raft days later and her testimony exposed Harvey's crimes. Harvey committed took his own life shortly after.
