"The Oregon Question" was a 19th century diplomatic controversy between the United States and the United Kingdom over who had jurisdictional rights to the Oregon Country, which is the area of the Pacific Northwest that includes the present-day U.S. states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, parts of Montana, Wyoming, and British Columbia in Canada. The question was ultimately settled by the Oregon Treaty in 1846, which divided the territory along the 49th parallel.Albert Gallatin, a prominent statesman and diplomat who served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1801 to 1814, was actively involved in the negotiations and wrote about the issue extensively.
