Jeff was out on OSR in Georgia, so Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk called on local icon Capt. Larry Miniard to sit in once again. The laughs started early, and they went all show long!
The weather, unfortunately, has continued to be distinctly un-funny. Water conditions are still messy, wind continues to be pushy, salinity levels are still wonky…what’s an angler to do? FYI – things MAY be looking better (go ahead and cross your fingers).
Now the great part about having a guy like Capt. Larry in the studio is the stories – it didn’t matter what the subject was…he had great stories for every single one of ’em. Fishing, hunting, good weather, bad weather, you name it. This is the ultimate episode for great tales.
If you dive into the Fishing Forecast archives, when you get to the June episodes of years past, you’ll hear Capt. Kevin talk about kingfish, tarpon, cobia, fishing the beach, and doing charter after charter after charter with bunches of happy anglers. Well, this June is quickly shaping up to be VERY different.
Find out just how terrible it’s been for Capt. Kevin and the Unusual Suspects, how bad they think it’s going to be, and check out the forecast to see if there’s a chance – however small – that things could get better for First Coast anglers in the coming week.
This time of year, the boys are typically talking fishing non-stop. Unfortunately, this week, they were talking about the weather – and the significant lack of fish. They were thankful for the rain, of course, but the combination of conditions was making everything tough.
The Old School Kingfish Shootout is on the horizon, and birthday boy Paul Dozier called in to hype it up (like it needs any hype, right?). After that, the conversation shifted to the “interesting” fishing conditions and left everyone asking where the fish were.
Ed Malin also called in during the episode to talk about his tournament, the Kingfish Shootout. Now if you’ve been listening for a while, and you’ve heard Ed call in, you know there’s no telling where things are going to go. This time is no different, so buckle up, sit back and enjoy the ride!
The guys’ conversation went all over the place, and even went sideways on them when it rolled into hog “delicacies”…don’t ask. Listen, but don’t ask.
Capt. Kevin was back in the studio after taking a week off to spend time with his daddy…and after the fishing week he had, he may have wanted to take another week off! Listen in to see if the rest of the Unusual Suspects had some more successful outings, and find out if the forecast bodes well for them – and you – in the upcoming week.
Capt. Kirk was out doing some OSR, so Capt. Kevin and Jeff welcomed in Harley from CSS Fireplaces and Outdoor Living, along with some heavy hitters for a special episode of the show.
The headline story, as you know, was the blocking of snapper season by a federal judge…THE DAY BEFORE THE SEASON BEGAN. Yeah, we know. Here’s the thing: it’s complicated, so the boys brought in Brett Hastings, attorney extraordinaire, to explain a bit of it in a way we can all understand. This is a MUST-LISTEN for anyone who fishes our waters or benefits from recreational fishing in any way – which is all of us.
But this story goes beyond the legal aspects, so the boys brought in Dr. Darin Willingham to talk about it, too. He talked about the fisheries and the effects of the injunction on local recreational anglers as well as the economic impact on the community.
Of course, we’re all trying to figure out what to do next. Unfortunately, it’s time to wait for all the other parties to move forward. In the meantime, it doesn’t hurt to reach out to your local representative, state senators and the governor’s office to keep this a priority for them.
If you need to consult an attorney, Brett is your man! Visit his firm’s website, HastingsInjuryLaw.com, to learn more about what Brett and his team can do for you.
Capt. Kevin was doing some OSR, so Capt. Chip Wingo, along with Capt. Rob Robbins, took command of the vessel and immediately steered everyone into rough waters based on what Capt. Ricky had to say. But don’t feel like you have to abandon ship just yet. Listen in and check out what all the Unusual Suspects have to say about what’s been happening with them…and what coming up.
Jeff was out this episode – he was down south in Ft. Pierce, fishing in a kayak tournament. Probably better for him, because the fishing on the First Coast has been TOUGH! Capt. Kevin, Capt. Kirk and everybody else were talking about it.
Kevin and Kirk did have more to talk about, though…this week, they were able to rub elbows with Gov. DeSantis! He was in NEFL to talk snapper and how things are getting so unfairly politicized…and in case you missed it – he’s on our side.
Capt. Paul Dozier dropped by to talk Old School Kingfish Tournament – but, as usual, talked about all kinds of stuff and shared all kinds of stories, too. Lots of fun and most definitely worth the listen!
Just when they thought hoped things were getting better on the First Coast for fishing, Capt. Kevin and the Unusual Suspects had to battle it out with the fishery for the entire week. Get the lowdown on what was happening, how they did, and what’s next for them…and you. The forecast is definitely worth a listen.
Jeff was doing some OSR, which left a seat open for Capt. Chip Wingo to join Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk. And what were they talking about? Welll, kinda sorta everything.
It was “baiterrific” in St. Augustine, with Kevin telling the boys the amount of bait was unprecedented this week. And depending on where they went, the Jacksonville guys were doing well, too.
The drought conditions continue to be a source of conversation – and concern – but thankfully, the weather should be taking a turn and bringing some much-needed rain. The guys talked all about it, and what the weather could mean for summer fishing and deer season this fall.
It was a great episode for all kinds of chatter…including some sideways stuff you’ll need to hear to believe!
Yeah, it’s been dry…historically dry (thoughts and prayers going out to everyone dealing with the drought conditions). And yeah, it’s been hot…is summer here already? But regardless of all that, the water is beautiful, the temps are perfect, and the fishing has been spectacular. Don’t believe it? Listen in to Capt. Kevin and the Unusual Suspects. They’ve got the proof and the stories.
And we’ve got that forecast for you, too.
