  • Jeremy Duncan: The Bible, Homosexuality, Christian Tradition, the Atheist and Agnostic

Commons Church founding member Pastor Jeremy Duncan was not raised in a very religious home. However, as a young adult, Christianity gradually became the center of his life. A friends invitation to attend a church youth group led an introduction to his future wife and the pursuit of a bachelor's degree from Eastern Bible College. A Master's in Theology from Ambrose University followed as well as a decade of service as an associate pastor at Westside King's Church. During his time there, he began to ask bigger questions with intellectual honesty, spiritual passion and with Jesus as the center of his life. Paul and Jeremy discuss today's challenges with biblical translation and a modern understanding of how to interpret the Bible with intellectual honesty. Is the word "homosexual" the correct use of St. Paul's Greek word "Arsenokoitai" in 20th century translations? What about traditions and rituals? How do they help Christians in today's complex world? Finally, Paul asks Jeremy how he talks with agnostics and atheists who have disassociated themselves from religion and a belief in God.

    Background, Experience, Education

Jeremy discusses his background growing up in a quasi-religious family. Church attendance consisted of holidays and seasons where his family would attend a Pentecostal denomination regularly. In high school, a friend invited him to a church youth group where he made friends and met his future wife. Christianity slowly became the center of his life. The church pastor encouraged Jeremy to go to Bible college for a bachelor's degree. He was hired at a church in Toronto where his mind began to expand outside of his environment. Jeremy admits he didn’t have expansive experience with church culture since his was limited to the Pentecostal denomination, Bible college and a church in Toronto. He left church ministry and started his own business for several years until a church in Calgary offered him a job. He began to do things a little differently and started asking bigger questions. He wrestled with what it means to be a pastor. He was at the church in Calgary for 10 years while completing his master's. He enjoyed leading and was able to try some different things and shape Christian communities. After all his church experience, he was able to plant Commons Church in 2014. Commons offers Christians a new way to discuss the Gospel with intellectual honesty, acknowledgement of the complexities of biblical translation and even larger biblical issues. Commons is near a university. Its congregation is full of educated people who believe faith is important and who want to bring their education and reason into their spirituality.

Homosexuality and Biblical Translation: Is it correct?

Paul and Jeremy discuss the Bible as the “infallible Word of God” and his interpretation of what that means. Paul asks about the 1946 RSV Bible translation that introduced the English word “homosexual” to the 20th century Christianity for St. Paul’s word “aresinacoitos.” St. Paul used the word to describe a sexual practice in 1st century Greco-Roman culture. For pastors and scholars like Jeremy, the word “homosexual” is considered an incorrect use of the word and what St. Paul was teaching. They discuss homosexuality from a 1st century perspective and what Jeremy believes St. Paul meant when describing non-consensual, predatory, unhealthy relationships vs. monogamous, covenant, healthy sexual relationships uncommon in the world St. Paul was living in. Jeremy believes when it comes to translation “there always has to be this open-handed humbleness with the Bible to say God is speaking to me through this but there will always be this level of miscommunication and uncertainty, but what is going to come through is the grace, compassion, and love Jesus is teaching us to embody."

Paul asks Jeremy if he believes in a closed or open canon of scripture. They discuss what this mean, the different books and formulations of scripture within the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Bibles. Also, should the canon be open to include new books to help us have a full, flourishing life here on earth. In other words, Jeremy answers the question do we need need additional scripture to help mankind meet the full measure of their creation? Yes, it's closed but because we are constantly learning new things about ourselves with science, psychology, sexuality and these things have to be incorporated into our story. We are absorbing the canon so well that it becomes the water that we breathe in. This can help us make new judgement calls and face new challenges appropriately with guidance from the Holy Spirit. Jeremy argues that complex issues not addressed in the Bible, such as euthanasia or homosexuality, can be understood by being so deeply immersed in the story of God that Christians can wrestle and find the appropriate response.

SIDE NOTE: The first time the word “homosexual” appeared in any bible was in the Revised Standard Version (RSV) published in February 11, 1946. In the RSV’s translation of 1 Corinthians 6:9, the word “homosexual” was used in lieu of the Greek words “malakoi” and “arsenokoitai.” Researchers agree today these words translate loosely to “effeminacy,” and “pervert,” or “sexual pervert.” The decision to use the word “homosexual” instead of the accurate translations was voted on by the RSV committee.

Traditions & Rituals: Are they good?

Paul asks Jeremy his thoughts on religious traditions, rituals, the complexity of starting a Church with good intentions but then having to implement policies and rules that can overshadow what the founders initially intended. Jeremy explains the purpose of traditions and rituals. He discusses how they are powerful tools to shape our relationships with God and one another. He says “if you come from a certain religious tradition and it’s meaningful for you, celebrate that, embrace that and hold onto it tightly but ask yourself how is it shaping me? Is it making me a kind person or is it turning me into a person who views things only my way. Jeremy says at Commons they believing in being 1) Intellectually honest 2) Spiritually passionate 3) Jesus at the center. Overall, we need to appreciate all the streams of Christianity.

Talking with the agnostic and atheist who have disassociated themselves from religion and even belief in God.  Paul asked Jeremy the best way to communicate with those who no longer believe in God. Jeremy says Jesus is the closest we’ll ever come to seeing divine love in our human story. All truth is God’s truth. Whenever we encounter truth, then this is the same divinity we see in Jesus. Science is an expression of the same truth we see in Jesus. Every time there is generosity, selfless giving and love, regardless of the religious paradigm, that is an expression of Jesus. Though other religions partake in these expressions of love, Jeremy believes Jesus is the core and that Christianity is the fullest expression of this divinity. The more calm, patient and peaceful he is about converting them to his way of thinking then the more open people are to having real conversations about his convictions. Overtime, Jeremy has witnessed countless agnostics and atheists find a stream of Christianity that gives them a clear understanding of themselves and the universe. Jeremy discusses what it means to be born again. He compares this to God removing our narrow view of the world and helping us relearn everything with our eyes wide open.

Paul Cardall’s roots run deep in Utah not only with his heritage, family, and friends, but Utah is where he built one of the music industry’s most successful independent record labels, Stone Angel Music. Why would the pianist uproot and move to Nashville, Tennessee in the pinnacle of his career? He knew nobody in Nashville, except one person. From New Orleans to Graceland, a stop at Johnny Cash’s grave, walking broadway, Paul takes listeners inside the world of the music business as he shares his remarkable journey creating the Utah record label, signing artists, producing the Worth of Souls project, and taking a road trip with his wife that changed everything.

    ABOUT PAUL CARDALL

The pianist recently released two unique versions of his much-anticipated upcoming instrumental project December.  Both versions of the album feature 14 tracks in a minimalist classical style, and all are original compositions by Cardall, with the exception of “Hush, Little Baby.” The pianist takes listeners on a journey from the rise of a new moon in September through the New Year.

  • Spensha Baker

Spensha Baker, who is known for being on Team Blake on NBC’s The Voice, joins Paul Cardall on the 34th episode of All Heart. Both artists met at the White House where they performed at the 2018 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Paul recently caught up with Spensha at the Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and discovered how God has led her on a path that is inspirational to anyone with a gift they are compelled to share with the world. As the daughter of military parents who were based in San Antonio, Texas and as a devout Christian, Spensha signed with Geffen Records as a child. She recorded one gospel album only to leave after taking a 3-year break to redefine her goals. She moved to Nashville in pursuit of a deep love for country music. On The Voice, she became the first black woman to make it to the final four. Paul and Spensha discuss the challenges of life in Nashville and what led her back to Texas. Spensha again took a 3-year break to rediscover her passion to follow God’s lead. After this, she caught the attention of Rascal Flatts, Jay DeMarcus. Jay is  a CEO and owner of the Christian label Red Street Records. Jay said, “When I first heard Spensha sing, I was taken by her voice. When we finally got to meet and she shared her passion for music and for God, we knew we wanted to be a part of her musical journey. We are excited for the road ahead.”

Spensha will be joining veteran Christian artists on the RSR roster that includes Jason Crabb, Avalon and rising stars Cade Thompson, Iveth Luna and Lauren Camey. This inspiring conversation offers valuable advice and insight into the challenges artists face in pursuing a music career.

    ABOUT JORDON BELL

Jordon was born and raised in Maine, where he took to the woods and primitive living at an early age. He joined his family in beaver trapping, deer and bird hunting, and catching brook trout from mountain streams along the Canadian border.

Restless at heart, Jordon began a life-defining journey at age 19, when he loaded everything he owned into a beat up old truck and moved to Alaska. There, he spent nine years climbing mountains, hunting, fishing, snowboarding and somehow surviving his often reckless adventures, which included spending many shelterless nights at -40ºF degrees and once being swept down a mountainside by an avalanche.

A carpenter by trade, Jordon’s work eventually had him traveling across the United States. Each location offered him a new type of wilderness experience. A job in Tennessee led him to settle down once he met his wife and started his family. He spends much of his time now running his construction company and passing on his outdoor knowledge and experience to his 10-year-old son.

By participating on Alone, Jordon hoped to rekindle his adventurous spirit of the past, meld it with his present insight and knowledge, and create a legacy for the future with the ultimate story to one day tell his grandchildren.

  • Duane Cardall: Retired Broadcast Journalist

The third season and twenty-eighth episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall the pianist is joined by his father Duane Cardall, a Broadcast Journalist and former Director of Editorials for Utah’s NBC affiliate KSL Television. They discuss how news has changed from the days when three television stations were committed to broadcasting the news as a public service to our time when 24 hour news cycles compete for advertising profits. Paul explores Duane’s gift as a journalist, from the time he was interested in being on the radio to becoming one of Utah's most respected and trusted journalist. As satellite technology advanced in the late 70’s Duane was one of the first “local” station journalists to broadcast live that year from Tokyo, Japan and and couple of months later, Israel.  He also offers insight on how to balance between his faith, family and career.

    ABOUT DUANE CARDALL:

Duane Cardall worked for KSL Television and Radio from 1972 until his retirement December 31, 2010.   He spent his last 13-years at the station as Director of Editorials where he was responsible for researching, writing and presenting three to five editorials each week.

Mr. Cardall’s editorial work followed more than 25 years with KSL News where his reporting duties required him to cover a broad spectrum of daily news events.   His specific assignment as Religion Specialist took him, not only throughout Utah and the United States, but also to more 50 nations of the world.  He interviewed or provided on-scene coverage of such diverse religious leaders as Pope John Paul II, the Dalai Lama and Rev. Jerry Falwell.  Over the course of his reporting career, he documented the international travels of four presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.   In 1978, he participated in the station’s first transoceanic live shot from Tokyo, Japan, and a month later Mr. Cardall hosted an historic live 30-minute documentary from Jerusalem, Israel.   He broadcast live from such diverse lands as Russia, Mexico, England, Germany and Hong Kong.  In 1991, he provided KSL viewers and listeners with exclusive coverage from Leningrad of the attempted Soviet Coup.

Mr. Cardall is especially noted for the many award-winning documentaries he produced: from his personal experience of running a marathon, to eloquently describing the subsistence level existence of cultures in such faraway lands as Mali and Bolivia.

  • Saddleback Church: The Heart of Worship Music with Josh Miller

On the 27th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Paul is joined by Mega-church Worship Leader Josh Miller.  Josh believes through inspirational and dry seasons in life, music remains the constant through which one can write and express their thoughts and emotions and share them with the body of Christ. With several years of experience in worship leading Josh enjoys leading others into God's presence, not only with music, but with his life as well.

Saddleback Worship is a community of worshipers serving Saddleback Church, with locations spread across four continents. Recording their music in Southern California, the team is prayerful in their efforts to put pen to paper and to capture what God is saying in their community. Saddleback Worship is a diverse group of members and exists to point every heart to the name above every name — the name of Jesus. Josh Miller is the Worship Development Pastor and partners with the Global Worship Pastor. He grew up the son of a teaching pastor and this created his love of church and music.

Saddleback is the largest church in California and one biggest in the US. The church began in Lake Forest California and Rick Warren is the founding pastor. They now have 18 campuses in the US and four of those are international. Paul’s wife Tina worked there several years ago and loved it. There is currently an awakening in music under the umbrella of Jesus. Music speaks so many different messages and it can unite people. It’s powerful. Josh believes worship directs people to the Creator and points attention only to Him. However, there is a struggle today since we have a country and world that is so divided. There is hope that worship can build a bridge that Jesus can walk over towards people. We are all sinners saved by a grace we never deserved. It is important for Christians to have integrity and have character that points people to Jesus. He has boundless mercy. Josh loves that Saddleback Worship Team is all about team and growing in Christ.

They are releasing a new album titled “Alive and Well”. It will be released in less than two weeks on September 3rd. During Covid, the worship team found their job shifted with everyone in their homes. They started creating and writing together over Zoom. The themes they found were light in the midst of darkness. Covid is a dark season but the light of Christ shines through it. Dawn and mercy are promised to us. The second theme is home is where Christ is. The third theme is life in Christ and how He is making us alive in him. In the noise of this world, Jesus is there. We need to be light in the world.

During the course of writing this album there was a hard season for a team member. Josh found in the moments where we don’t feel God’s presence, we have His promises. These are found in scripture and it is truth even when our emotions are up and down. We cling to the promises of forgiveness. Our greatest growth comes through seasons of hardships. Eugene Peterson says I prayed for wisdom and you gave me problems to solve. I asked for strength and you gave me pain and anguish and struggles to grow from. God can do beautiful things in hard seasons.
