The Phileo Podcast

Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects

In honor of last week's episode featuring E.T., we dive into our favorite alien movies. Byers gives us an introduction to “Voss Vibes” with one of his Top 5 movies. We do a mini-dive on M. Night Shyamalan (again?). Byers changed the rules, again, to make a longer honorable mentions list and it leads us down a rabbit hole of basically sharing all of our favorite alien movies that we considered for the list. You could tell that there were a lot of considerations for this one and we really enjoyed doing the research.

Byers mentions the Alien/UFO Festival in Roswell, which is a real thing that is usually around 4th of July weekend. https://ufofestival.com/

Goofs: Both Byers and Troy were struggling for names of people, places, and things and we even recorded this one early!

Late Nights at Blockbuster

Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster sees us go into confession about how E.T. and other movies freaked us out as kids. Our attack on road blocks continues and we bring up the biggest plot hole that would make E.T. a 3-minute movie.  Troy tries to make the case that this is a breakout performance from Drew Barrymore and then Byers talks some sense into him after combing through one of the strangest IMDBs for a movie star ever.

Goofs: Troy said that Spielberg dictated this to Mathison during Close Encounters of the Third Kind but it was Raiders of the Lost Ark.

NFL Season Preview

We’re here with thoughts on all the teams – division winners, Super Bowl picks, as well as picks for all the awards like MVP, OPOY, DPOY, etc. And we reveal our first tier rankings. Those will get updated every 4 weeks during the season. So please feel free to let us know who we think too much of, who we think too little of, and why we are completely wrong about your favorite team.

Goofs: Since the season ends in 2023, that’s what we refer to it as.

Corner Booth at Rex's

Calvin returns to the podcast to talk with Byers and Troy about the recent Disney + Star Wars series, Obi- Wan Kenobi. We get really deep into what we didn’t care for but still manage to talk about the many positives of the series.

Spoiler Free thoughts until the 34:34 mark. If you feel that we linger a little too long on the negative, we start discussing positives about the show at the 1:17:00 mark.

Goofs: Book of Boba Fett was seven episodes rather than the six that Troy thought. He also said that Drive was a recent movie when it came out 11 years ago…

Join us as we discuss the newest MCU theatrical release, Thor: Love and Thunder. Get ready for us to say “Fun idea, lacking in the execution” a lot. Is there such a thing as too much Guns and Roses? If you visit the Facebook page we’ll share some of our favorite goat yelling content on Youtube in honor of Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder.

Spoilers starting at 17:20. Especially a Doctor Strange 2 spoiler to start out.

Thor: Love and Thunder discussion ends at 48:36.

The remaining time we go into some housekeeping: San Diego Comic Con announcement wrap up, discuss why we won’t be reviewing Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Dumbledore or Moon Knight, and our schedule for future podcasts.

Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects

We thought about doing a Top 5 on Christopher Nolan movies, but seeing as how he has 10 major releases we figured it would be more worthwhile to rank them. It goes without saying that SPOILERS abound in this episode. If you haven’t watched all of these films, we would recommend you do so before listening. Except for Insomnia, we don’t spoil anything in that movie. Byers compares Interstellar to Up at one point.

Goofs: Troy incorrectly stated that Memento was the only R rated movie from Nolan because Insomnia was also rated R. Troy was wrong that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has taken a reprieve from acting in movies.

Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects

Concluding our run on Batman topics, we rank all of the theatrical release Batman movies one through 10, one of which may be lost to time for some. Since we went through deep dives on The Dark Knight trilogy in the last few episodes we tried not to repeat ourselves and quickly moved on to those that had not already been discussed. There are few agreements on the bottom and top of the rankings but our middle rankings are pretty different. We didn't include the Ben Affleck movies as those are more Justice League movies.

Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects

We couldn't pass up the opportunity to discuss our favorite villains from Batman's rogues gallery. We opened up the choices to all their versions in movies, TV, comics, and video games. While most of these are characters from the movies, Troy leaned a little more towards video games and Batman: The Animated Series while Byers drew from the Gotham television series.

Late Nights at Blockbuster

Dark Knight Rises

Our month (or more) of Batman continues as we wrap up Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and discuss the good, the bad and the confusing of this last chapter for Christian Bale as the Dark Knight.

Goofs: Stay tuned to future episodes where we discuss Christopher Nolan’s other films, most notably Interstellar. We recorded in a different order than we are releasing these and we referenced other recordings that we have yet to release, but trust us, it will make sense eventually.
