Pirates pre-post game host Dan Zangrilli joined the show. Dan talked about what kind of return the Pirates could get for Jose Quintana. Dan said catching depth could be something the team seeks out if not pitching. Dan defended Oneil Cruz and said he still likes what he sees from the big prospect so far. Dan wants Kevin Newman to bounce between shortstop and second base when he returns and not taking back the starting spot from Cruz. 

Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg talked about the win over the Yankees last night. He got into trading Jose Quintana and said it could be similar to how things panned out with Tyler Anderson last year. He said even with some struggles, Oneil Cruz is so exciting to watch. Greg expects veterans to play up until the trade deadline when those guys could be moved. He agreed that the Pirates are only 2-3 years away from being a true competitor in the NL. He said Jack Suwinski has been a huge jolt and an unexpected surprise. Greg said what he wants to see out of Mitch Keller tonight against a tough Yankees lineup.

He talked about what kind of expansion could be ahead in college football. John said the Big 10 will never want Pitt because the television revenue just isn’t there with the program. John said there will eventually be three major entities in college football, led by the Big 10 and SEC then another conference full of outliers. He added that Pitt is “sitting pretty” in the ACC.

Jason said it will be similar to the Tyler Anderson trade of last year and the Pirates could maybe even find more in return. Jason gave a viewpoint of when the Pirates could return to a true playoff competitor. Jeff asked Jason about some of the young horses pitching in the minors who will be key pieces of the next potential playoff team. Poni made a push that the Pirates should offer Quintana a 2-year extension to be a leader on the next competitive team. Jason said it will be interesting to see what happens with Oneil Cruz and Kevin Newman when Newman returns.

Gerrit Cole is back at PNC Park. He met with the local media for over 20 minutes today. Poni said his thoughts on Cole have changed drastically since he left Pittsburgh because of how his final few seasons here went.
