We rehashed the conversation from earlier today with Jon Morosi, suggesting Andrew McCutchen could be trade bait as we get closer to the deadline at the end of next month. If the Pirates can get Jack Leiter or someone similar, is that a worthy return? 

Derek Shelton went to bat for Andy Haines and why he believes his hitting coach is doing an acceptable job. If the Pirates have a bottom-5 lineup in the league, how much does that go on the hitting coach and how much goes on the manager? Shelton has the hitting background, so why can’t he identify a good hitting coach? The guys think Shelton has to rip into the players and coaches a little bit more if the ‘good cop’ mentality isn’t working. The guys also discussed the idea of trading Mitch Keller if things hit rock bottom this season, per Jon Morosi earlier today. Which trade would bother you more? Dan also went against the grain and told the guys why he would pick Paul Skenes 1st overall instead of Dylan Crews or anyone else.

Keith painted the picture of what seems to be a pretty loaded draft class. He talked about where Skenes compares to former top pitching prospects. Keith could see the Pirates doing what they did in the Henry Davis draft and end up getting better value in the following rounds by not taking THE guy at 1st overall. Keith said the Pirates shouldn’t fall for the stuff Scott Boras is getting out there saying Crews doesn’t want to play for the Pirates. The guys then asked about Davis’ development and why the Pirates don’t seem to want him at catcher. Keith talked about what he thinks of Nick Gonzales and why he’s not sure if he’s ready just yet despite being at the major league level.
