Altoona Curve manager Callix Crabbe joined the show. Callix talked about his experience with Henry Davis from earlier this season and what he could provide the Pirates upon his promotion. He advertised Davis as a catcher – talking up his arm and his blocking skill behind the plate, but said there are a few little things that need to be done. He expects Davis to be more a catcher in the big leagues. Callix said there is an emphasis on position versatility in the Pirates system and he said most players don’t like only knowing one position defensively. Callix said Henry doesn’t chase a ton at the plate and typically knows when to swing the bat, citing his high contact rate. Callix referenced Henry’s strikeout-to-walk ratio and how it has improved during his journey through the Pirates system. Poni asked about the diet and nutrition plan and said Henry does a tremendous job with what he puts into his body. He got into why Davis is still prepared for MLB level play even though he didn’t spend much time at all in AAA. He said Henry has an “open stubbornness” and why that will help him even if he struggles. Callix then got into what he sees in Endy Rodriguez and how he compares to Davis head-to-head.
