Stories are so crucial in the podcasting space. You can be more engaging with your audience when you have a story to share because we all know and love stories; it's how our brain best processes information. So I'm so happy to bring on Tyler Foley, who shares his perspective, through his acting and film and TV world. He's been in that world since he was six years old and is an accomplished film and stage performer as well. He has appeared in productions including Freddy vs. Jason, Door to Door, Carrie, and the musical Ragtime. Tyler is passionate about helping others confidently, take the stage and impact their audience with their stories, and that's why I've brought him on today.

He also is the author of the number one best-selling book, "the Power to Speak Naked". We're going to talk a bit about that which includes overcoming stage fright and learning the secrets to being a more engaging speaker. Because Sean comes from that visual media world of film, TV, and stage and I am from the radio world where there are no visuals involved, I wanted to dig into his brain a little bit to see what the difference is and how that visual world can help in the podcasting space as well.

Part of having interviews on your podcast, is meeting like-minded people and sharing their stories. Not only is it an intimate way to connect with your listeners, but also to your guests as well! One example is with Kathryn Woods, my guest today. I was introduced to Kathryn when someone we both know thought we'd have lots to talk about since we did very similar work through voice coaching. And boy, was she right!

Kathryn is a Communication and Voice Coach with over 20 years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist. She is also a recovering shy person, and fuses those aspects of her background to teach speakers, business owners, and executives how to use their voice to connect with their listeners when they speak, so they can have more influence and make a bigger impact.

Although we are both voice coaches and share the same love of amplifying people's voices, it was her background as a speech-language pathologist that perked my interest! Since I do not have a medical background, I brought Kathryn on today to share her medical perspective to voice work. We chatted about tips for your voice from an SLP perspective. How breath is the foundation of your voice. Plus, what hurdles she overcame as a recovering shy person.

I first heard of Hadar Shemesh going down the rabbit hole of looking for new podcasts to listen to and her Influency Podcast caught my eye - or ears in this case. Her passion to have her listeners own their voice was very much aligned with mine and I kept hearing myself say, yes, yes! Agreeing with her content and how her words were very similar to my own passion and values of empower women's voices and creating a diverse voice in podcasting. So I had to reach out and I am so glad that she decided to come on the show!

Hadar is an Israeli entrepreneur who helps non-native speakers of English find clarity and freedom in English. She is committed to dismantling the notion that English belongs to native speakers with a standard accent and shares her work on her YouTube channel Accent’s Way English with Hadar and her podcast which I mentioned earlier - the InFluency Podcast.

Today we chat about owning your voice (with a non-standard accent), impostor syndrome, showing up publicly (whether on a podcast or video) when English is not your first langauge, the lack of diverse voices and the impact it has on how we perceive our own voices.

You don’t necessarily have to be an extrovert, in order to have an engaging voice or that fear that I’m just an introvert so I speak more meekly and more quietly, and I don’t really want to express myself. No, that label of introvert and extrovert doesn’t apply to your voice. You have a voice and I want you to use it to have people hear you in your fullest capacity and to share your story. What is your message? Your voice is the number one way to connect with a listener. Even if you have the video portion, or you do a lot of social media lives, it is still going to come down to your voice. How are you saying something? What are you going to say? That fear of being judged will hold your voice back. So let's dive deeper into this through this episode!

Speech can either cause some of our biggest social divides or it will bring us all together. One way to create diversity and unity in our speech is found in the value of learning multiple languages. Growing up in a home experiencing more than one language means that you are able to perceive people's speech in different ways. Having grown up with Cantonese being my primary language, yet living in an English dominant world, I saw that first hand which is why it brings me great joy to share to bring on Katherine Kinzler to the podcast.

Katherine is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago. Her work has appeared regularly in the New York Times and other outlets, and she was named a “Young Scientist,” one of 50 scientists under age 40 recognized by the World Economic Forum. Her book "How You Say It: Why You Talk the Way You Do—And What It Says About You" exposes linguistic prejudice and that is the reason why I wanted her on the show.

Originally, I was so drawn to her work with kids showing why multilingualism is beneficial for kids and our society as at the time, my kiddo was getting ready to start kindergarten and I was teaching her some basic Cantonese and French (as French is also an official language of Canada). It struck me how Katherine's work mirrored a lot of how I grew up and wondered how this would impact my own daughter. But then as I poured through the rest of her book, I realized her work lines up exactly with podcasting as well.

You need to share your voice, join the conversation, and contribute to the world's voices. As I say, there are no mistakes, just open your mouth and try because it's all a journey. If you don't try and speak up, how will you learn for the next time? Because there will always be a next time.

Not all filler words are created equal. Did you know there's a difference between "ah" and "um"? Yeah, neither did I!

As a podcast editor, I hear people speak, a lot. All the nuances in their voice, the words they choose, and how they present themselves. And in this work, when I'm scrolling in the forums, other editors gripe about people's overuse of filler words like "um", "ah", and "like" all the time. 

Alexandra D'Arcy is my first guest on the podcast. She is a Professor of Linguistics and the Director of the Sociolinguistics Research Lab at the University of Victoria, where she is also the Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Humanities.

Alexandra debunks the notion that 'like" is a modern crutch word used only by the young and flighty. In fact, it's more complicated than you think. Her book is titled "Discourse-Pragmatic Variation in Context; 800 Years of LIKE". That is a mouthful for me, so I asked her to dumb it down for me who's only been to radio school, not an academic, and wanted to know what the heck does discourse-pragmatic variation even mean!?!?!

We discuss the many jobs that "like" has, the criticism of women's language, and what really is modern language.

Here are Alexandra D'Arcy's "like" examples:

• FINAL LIKE (adverb, ‘as it were’)
  • He was quite gentle and quiet LIKE. (Corpus of Historical American English/Uncle Tom’s Cabin/1852)
  • We need to smarten it up a bit LIKE. (Toronto, woman, born 1927)
• DISCOURSE MARKER (adverb, ‘for example, ‘approximately’, ‘in this way’, ‘let me illustrate’, etc.)
  • They never went out in a small canoe. LIKE, we went from here to Cape Beale. They had great large war canoes. (Victoria BC, woman, born 1875)
  • Och, they done all types of work. LIKE they ploughed and harrowed. (Southwest Tyrone, man, born 1943)
  • It’s probably about a bit longer than this room. LIKE it’s probably like that wide and like a bit longer. (Victoria BC, boy, born 2006)
• ALSO THE DISCOURSE MARKER, but after a verb that introduces quoted speech
  • He said LIKE “Stored water is just like stored dollars.” (Victoria BC, man, born 1935)
  • Imagine being told by your parents LIKE “We know you have it in you.” (Victoria BC, man, born 1959)
• DISCOURSE PARTICLE (adverb, but put focus on what follows or allows speaker to mitigate claim on truth or authority)
  • Well right in front of that they had boards LIKE built across. (Victoria BC, woman, born 1874)
  • They were just LIKE sitting, waiting to die. (Scotland, man, born 1925)
  • His father had LIKE a restaurant cafe in Regent Street. (New Zealand, man, born 1955)
