    TITLE: 23-006 HEADS OR TAILS

VERSE: Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” ISAIAH 30:21, NIV

We long to hear God’s voice. We come to a fork in the road, a moment of crisis, a point of decision that requires us to take a step in one direction or another because standing still is no longer an option. We tell God that if He just lets us know one way or another —this way or that way, heads or tails —we’ll do it. Yet we’re still not sure. Right or left? We just don’t know.

We pray for God to give us direction and we promise Him that if He will just speak up and tell us which way to go, we’ll do it. But then we wait…and wait…and wait…and nothing happens!

We start to wonder if maybe He heard our prayer but He doesn't have an answer for us yet or maybe He's just not going to answer at all? Maybe He isn't listening anymore! Maybe His voice is gone forever!

We’re often so concerned with what we think is right and wrong that we miss the point of God’s voice. Yes, He wants to communicate with us. But He also wants to draw us closer to Him.

When we live in fear or doubt—when we doubt that He’s actually speaking to us, or when we second-guess what His voice is saying—we’re missing out on the communion He longs for with us. That’s why it’s important to listen carefully. Listen not just with your ears but also with your heart and soul.

We all want to hear from God, but we approach it all wrong. We think we're supposed to get information from Him—questions answered, problems solved—but that's not what He wants.

What God really wants is for us to have a relationship with Him. That means He's going to withhold some things from us. And when He does, it's because He knows that withholding will make us seek Him more deeply, which will bring us closer together and deeper in our relationship with Him.

If you want to hear God's voice more clearly, then stop looking for answers and start looking for Him.

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, forgive me for seeking You as a giver of information rather than seeking You as a person. Draw me close, not just so I can hear Your words, but so I can hear Your heart.

  • 23-005 THE PLANS OF GOD

    TITLE: THE PLANS OF GOD

VERSE: Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. AMOS 3:7, NIV

Ask the average person what a prophet does, and most will boil it down to predicting the future. A prophet is often perceived as the Judeo-Christian version of a clairvoyant, a seer who peers into the plan of God and perfectly describes how it will unfold. Somehow we got the impression that prophecy—hearing God’s voice and declaring it—is entirely future-oriented.

But this is not true. Prophets also speak in the present tense. We can find evidence of this in Jesus' own ministry: "Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it" (Luke 11:28). In other words, obedience is part of hearing from God today. And when we do hear from God today and obey His instruction, we are fulfilling our calling as prophets.

The plans of God are better than our own.

But the problem is, we don’t always know what those plans are. We can get so caught up in our own little worlds that we don’t even know how to follow God’s plan for our lives.

So how do we know when God is speaking to us? How do we go about listening to Him?

Well, here’s one thing we need to remember: prophecy can be about the future, of course, but the point of hearing God’s voice is not simply to figure out what’s going to happen down the road. It’s to get God’s perspective—whether on the past, the present, or the future.

He reveals His thoughts about us, His interpretation of events and circumstances, the purposes He is working out, and His greatest desires for our lives. He portrays life in its true light—a vital point of view when we get stuck in dark places. When He speaks to His servants (prophets) according to the New Testament (Hebrews 1:1-2), He reveals not only His plans but also His heart. And His prophets (any believers who will listen)

It's easy to get caught up in the moment. When we're in a tough situation, it's difficult to know that God has a plan for us.

But when we remember that He is perfect and that His perspective is always available to us, we can have confidence that He will show us how to handle our circumstances appropriately.

When we hear God, it's because He wants to speak to us.

It's not an accident or a surprise; it's a carefully designed plan.

He doesn't make decisions without us, or carry them out without our participation.

He makes us partners in His plans for humanity.

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, involve me in what You’re doing. Reveal Your purposes to me. Help me to see from Your perspective, think Your thoughts, and walk in Your ways.

  • 23-004 THE GIFT OF PROPHECY

    TITLE: THE GIFT OF PROPHECY

VERSE: Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives —especially the ability to prophesy. 1 CORINTHIANS 14:1

The gift of prophecy is one of the most neglected instructions in the New Testament. Paul tells the Corinthians —not apostles, not church leaders, but regular people who haven’t done a great job of handling spiritual gifts —to seek the gift of prophecy. And not only are they to seek it, but they are also told to seek it zealously —literally to covet it, be jealous for it, and eagerly pursue it. In other words, Paul wants us to listen to him and heed his teachings, but also to be able to hear God’s voice on our own and express it to one another.

Prophecy is a much-misunderstood gift. Most people think that prophecy is just predicting the future or foretelling events that haven’t happened yet. But this is only part of what prophecy really is. The true definition of prophecy includes not only foretelling events that haven’t happened yet (which is called foreknowledge), but also declaring God’s Word for today (which is called forth-telling). That’s why Paul tells us:

"Pursue love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy."

Clearly, this isn’t an Old Testament–style warning: “If you say you speak God’s words and get it wrong, the penalty is death by stoning.” It’s an open invitation, not a narrowing of the boundaries to limit impostors. It’s an encouragement for all believers to listen, to tune in to the divine heartbeat and become vessels of revelation for others, to try to pursue and cultivate the gift of prophecy.

And considering Paul’s audience, the implications are surprising: Anyone can do this. It isn’t just for Isaiahs and Jeremiahs and Ezekiels, with staggering words of warning and enormous burdens of responsibility. It’s for average folks, anyone with a heart to hear. And, as Paul indicates in 1 Corinthians 14:3, it is for strengthening, encouraging, and comforting others.

God is a communicator looking for people who will learn the keys to hearing Him; who will listen for His insight and direction for specific situations and then express it to others. Too many people disqualify themselves from God’s invitation, either by false perceptions of their own gifts or false perceptions of God. Still, He calls us to come deeper into His presence with listening ears —and with the rock-solid conviction that He will make His voice known.

God wants us to know Him intimately so we can hear His still small voice and follow His direction as we navigate this world. As we grow in our relationship with Him, we learn how to recognize His voice when He speaks. We also learn how to communicate what we hear from Him in a way that is beneficial to others.

    LET'S PRAY...

Holy Spirit, teach me to prophesy. I choose to eagerly pursue all of your gifts, but especially the gift of hearing You and declaring Your words to others —to encourage them, comfort them, and build them up.

  • 23-003 SHEPHERDS AND SHEEP

    TITLE: SHEPHERDS AND SHEEP

VERSE: [Jesus said,] “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” JOHN 10:27

In the hustle and bustle of life, it can be hard to keep track of which voices are speaking to us. We’re bombarded by messages from all sides—some loud and clear, others whispered so quietly we have to strain to hear them. Some are tender and sympathetic; others strident and critical. And all compete for our attention.

But what if there were a way to identify those most important voices? What if we could listen for the ones that would help us find our way?

Jesus knows how confused we can be. That’s one of the reasons He gave His followers an illustration about shepherds and sheep. Sheep learn to recognize the voice of their shepherd so that when he calls to them, even in the midst of a multitude of other voices, they follow his distinctive sound. The other voices are just noise to the sheep of the Good Shepherd; they are uniquely tuned to His voice alone. When they hear it, they follow.

That’s what Jesus wants for you—to hear His voice above all others and follow Him wherever He may lead. He is your shepherd, and He will guide you through every valley and shadowed place as you seek His face and His favor in your life.

It's not always loud or booming, but it's always consistent. You can hear it when you're praying, or when you're reading your Bible. It's a voice that knows you and isn't afraid to call you out on your mistakes. It's a voice that wants nothing more than for you to be happy and healthy—physically, mentally, and spiritually.

You might think you've never heard this voice before because it sounds like someone else's voice; because it doesn't sound like what we're used to hearing from God; because we don't want to listen; because we're too busy listening to other voices—voices that tell us lies about who we are and what we can do with our lives. But if we listen closely enough, if we pay attention long enough, if we ask hard enough questions…we'll find that one true voice calling us into existence.

We all want to hear the voice of Christ.

It's a pretty simple request, right? We want to hear Him talk to us and guide us. We want to know that He hears our prayers and answers them.

But how do you know when Jesus is speaking to you? How do you know if it's really Him when He does speak? How should His voice sound?

The truth is, there are no easy answers. You can't just go by what other people say; everyone has different experiences of hearing the Lord speak to them. And most people will tell you they've never heard Jesus speak at all! So how do you know if your experience is valid or not?

My advice? Don't make assumptions about what Christ's voice should sound like. Be willing to step into a learning process. But know that it's not only possible to hear His voice, it's assured. Somewhere within your soul, you will hear His heart-to-heart words and know they are His.

    LET'S PRAY...

Jesus, my Shepherd, tune my heart to hear Your words. Let them sink into my soul and become a part of who I am. Help me ignore false voices and listen to Yours alone.

  • 23-002 WHEN GOD SPEAKS THINGS HAPPEN

TITLE: WHEN GOD SPEAKS, THINGS HAPPEN

VERSE: In the beginning, the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. JOHN 1:1

If you think about it, every time God speaks in the Bible, things happen. He says, “Let there be light,” and light comes into being. He calls out a people from among the nations and reveals His purposes through them. He chooses prophets to deliver His messages when those people are in danger and need to return to Him. And when He sends His own Son to live among us, the Son is called “the Word.” Clearly, we do not serve a silent God.

But then: if God talks so much, why doesn't He talk more often? Why does He leave us in the dark for so many years at a time? Why does He let bad things happen to good people? Where is this loving Father we're supposed to trust?

The answer is simple: because we wouldn't listen! God has been talking all along—but we just weren't listening. We had too many distractions and too many demands on our attention that kept us from hearing what was being said—and even when we did hear it (like with John), it just didn't seem real enough for us to be able to do anything about it...so we just ignored it!

Sometimes, the best way to hear God is to just stop talking...and just listen.

We all know that God speaks through His Word—the Bible. But what about personal conversations? What about when He tells you something special, just for you?

It’s easy to doubt that God speaks today, much less to you personally. But I believe He does speak, and He speaks often—to me, at least! And when He does, things happen in my life.

I’ll never forget the time I was struggling with an issue in my life and felt like there was no way out. I was in a place where I didn’t know what to do next or how to make it work. Then one night as I was lying in bed trying to sleep, God spoke to me. He said: “You need to get up and write down everything you feel right now.” And so I did! I got up and wrote down everything that was going through my mind—and then went back to sleep!

The next morning when I read over what I wrote...and there was my answer.

No matter what you're doing, God's speaking. He's always speaking. Of course, we don't always listen—we have too much going on. But the problem isn't that God isn't talking; it's that we just don't know how to hear Him.

The first step is understanding that hearing God is acknowledging that He still speaks. We have to be convinced of that in order to press through the frustrations on the way to hearing Him. Low expectations will undermine our efforts. If we know He’s the Word who always has something to say, we won’t give up easily in our attempts to hear Him. Most of all, we’ll believe   —a prerequisite to receiving anything from God. Faith opens our ears.

    You can hear Him.

He's speaking to you right now.

In the stillness of your mind and the quiet of your heart, He is calling out to you. He wants you to know that He's there, that He loves you, and that He has a plan for your life.

You were created for a relationship with God, so when you hear Him speak, don't be afraid—just listen! It's normal. You were made for this kind of communication with God.

    LET'S PRAY...

Living Word, I invite You to speak to me. I know You have been; please open my ears to hear. I want to learn the sound of Your voice and know Your thoughts. In faith, I’m listening.

  • 23-001 FROM THE HEART OF GOD

TITLE: FROM THE HEART OF GOD

VERSE: This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength.” ISAIAH 30:15

“This is the normal, natural posture for My children. I want you to rest in Me. When I first spoke these words to Israel, they were desperately trying to arrange their own rescue. They looked around at the threats to their security and didn’t believe I would come through for them. Their restlessness became their downfall. But this is My desire for you: to place your full confidence in Me to lead you, speak to you, deliver you, protect you, provide for you, and come through for you  —even when for a moment it doesn’t look like I will.

“If you will let this be your posture when you listen for My voice, you will hear Me. I want you to listen carefully, but I do not want you to strive and to strain. A restless spirit has a hard time hearing the pure, clear sound of My voice. A trusting, calm spirit will hear the echoes deep within. I rarely shout. You must be quiet to hear Me.

“Do you really want to hear Me? Then quiet yourself and be still. Be confident. Lay your doubts and skepticism aside. Rebuke your restlessness and your fears. Set aside your own agenda so you’ll be able to recognize Mine. But bring your enthusiasm. I love your deep desire to know Me better. I long to connect with you and build our relationship. Long for Me without striving for Me. Seek Me without straining. Rest and trust, and be very patient. I will train your spirit to hear.”

    LET'S PRAY...

Sovereign Lord, Holy One of Israel, who am I that You would want to talk to me? But You do, and I have set my heart to listen. Sensitize my spirit to Your voice. I set aside my fears, plans, manipulations, anxieties, impatience —everything —to hear You. In my quietness and confidence, be my strength.

  • 22-365 A GENERATION OF HARD-HEARTEDNESS

    TITLE: A GENERATION OF HARD-HEARTEDNESS

VERSE: Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts. HEBREWS 3:7-8, 15; 4:7

If you’re a Christian, chances are you’ve heard the phrase “hard-hearted.” It may have been in the context of Hebrews, or maybe you heard it in a sermon. But what is it? And why are we talking about it now?

    Well, let me tell you.

The people of Israel had hardened their hearts in the wilderness, complaining against God and rebelling against His ways. They had heard His voice, but they didn’t believe it or cling to it for long. This hard-heartedness became a theme for prophetic voices and psalmists centuries later, and the writer of Hebrews brings it up again. God’s people were once again tempted to reject what He was saying because His ways seemed too difficult. They were contending against the direction God was leading.

What does it mean to listen with a soft heart?

It means that when God speaks to us, we listen. We don't just hear the words and move on with our lives. We don't just nod and agree because we think it's the right thing to do. Instead, we take his words into our hearts and allow them to shape us into who he created us to be.

It means that when God says something is wrong or shouldn't be done, we stop doing it—not because we're afraid of what will happen if we don't, but because we trust his goodness implicitly and want to please him.

A soft heart is not afraid of what God might say next because it knows that whatever He tells us is for our good—even if it doesn't feel like it at first—and His Word always brings life (John 6:63).

I would like to talk to you today about a generation of hard-heartedness. It is a generation that I fear exists in many of us, and it is a generation that I hope will not exist in you.

The Bible tells us that it is always the right time to respond to God, just as surely as a soft heart is always the right response. When He speaks —and as we’ve seen, He certainly does when we persevere in listening —there is no reason to delay our acceptance of what He has said. He may give us future direction, but He wants present faith —an immediate embrace of His voice. When you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. Soften it and respond to what He says. Today.

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, today is always the day to hear. My ears are always open. Every day, I’m listening, hungering for the sound of Your voice and attentive to Your words. My heart is Yours. And my ears are ready for anything You want to say.

  • 22-364 FROM THE HEART OF GOD

TITLE: FROM THE HEART OF GOD

VERSE: [Jesus said,] “It is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.” JOHN 16:7

“Very few of My people believe that it was best for them for Me to go away. Many long for the experience of the disciples who sat around Me listening to My words. It’s hard for many to see their relationship with My Spirit as ‘better,’ because for most, it isn’t. They have forgotten how real and tangible that relationship is supposed to be.

“The Father and I are seated in heaven. The Spirit is your essential relationship with God. Yes, I promised I would always be with you, and I am —in the Spirit. He and the Father and I are one, just as you are in Me and I am in you. But as you practically connect with Me, as you pray to the Father, as you listen for My voice, as you read My Word —as you relate to God in every way —remember that, in this age, it is all through the Spirit. Don’t neglect Him.

“In a relationship between the humble and the proud, the humble defers to the proud. Remember that God is humble. Refuse to be prideful, or you will rarely experience His presence.

“The Spirit doesn’t advertise Himself, so you will have to look for Him. He lives in you, but you won’t be aware of that unless you choose to be. He is available to guide you, but only when you ask. He is available to empower you, but only when you depend on Him to do so. He is available to speak to you, but only when you engage in conversation and remember to listen at least as much as you talk. He is, in truth, everything you need Him to be, but in practice only what you allow Him to be in you.”

Holy Spirit, make me more aware of You. Help me depend on Your enormous power and emulate Your enormous humility. I submit to Your leadership. I listen in silence as I invite You to speak as freely and loudly as You want to.

  • 22-363 AN INVITATION FROM GOD

    TITLE: AN INVITATION FROM GOD

VERSE: I had not told anyone about the plans God had put in my heart for Jerusalem. NEHEMIAH 2:12

The woman had been noticing a trend, and her heart was burdened by it. Single parents from an economically challenged neighborhoods would drop their children off at church on Sunday mornings and leave. Some in the congregation were offended—“The church isn’t a babysitting service,” they would say—but she saw it as an opportunity. The kids needed God, and by investing attention in them in Sunday school, the church would also have an avenue into the lives of the parents. This was not an intrusion; it was an open invitation from God.

The woman prayed for guidance and courage to speak up at a meeting where this issue was being discussed. She felt that God spoke to her: “My child, you are doing what is right in my sight, but those who are offended need to be reminded of the truth about me and my love for them. My desire is to show them through you that I am interested in their lives and that I care about their well-being.”

I want you to imagine that you are a pastor of a church. You have been asked by a woman to expand your Sunday school program to meet the specific needs of her children and their families.

You agree and ask her to develop a plan for it. At first, she is intimidated by the task, but then she is inspired by God's call on her life. She grabs hold of the vision and runs with it. God put this burden in her heart for a reason: She is the one he was calling to intervene!

Nehemiah affirmed before moving to Jerusalem, God puts His purposes into the hearts of His people. He gives a sense of mission and calling to those who can take the lead in meeting the needs around them. We may think our burdens are for others to fulfill, and others may certainly be involved. But our burdens are usually the prompting of the Holy Spirit —not for someone else to do something about the problem, but for us to address it ourselves. Where there’s a strong vision to fulfill a Kingdom-oriented purpose, the Spirit has been speaking. And no matter how intimidated we may feel, we’re to begin walking in that direction and follow as the Spirit leads.

    LET'S PRAY...

Holy Spirit, help me sort out the burdens in my heart. Are they all Yours? Which ones should I follow? Lead me to fulfill the purposes You have placed within me. Clarify my vision and secure my steps. Lead me through open doors to accomplish Your Kingdom mission wherever I can.

  • 22-362 RETURN FROM CAPTIVITY

    TITLE: RETURN FROM CAPTIVITY

VERSE: The glory of the LORD rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the LORD rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance. ISAIAH 60:1-3

You know how when you're reading a book, and you get to the end of a chapter, and it's like, "What happens next? I can't wait to find out!"

God has that kind of ending in store for us. He sees the end of our stories and knows how good they are. He wants us to be encouraged by glimpses of the last page, so we can keep going through all the formidable obstacles and grim plot twists along the way. When we’re in the middle of the story, with all its formidable obstacles and grim plot twists —you’ve probably noticed that all good stories have them, including yours —God encourages us with glimpses of the last page. He wants us to know that everything ends well.

When God gave the future exiles of Jerusalem a glorious picture of their return from captivity, He was also giving us a prophetic picture of His promises to us.

All nations will come to our light, and mighty kings will see our radiance. How is this possible? God shines on us. He speaks to us. He identifies us as His sons and daughters. As we see Him, listen to Him, draw close to Him, and bathe in His love, His favor on us becomes clear. We take on His nature. We become noticeable.

Not only do we reflect the glory of God one day in heaven but now while the world lies in darkness. We reflect His glory because He shines on us—and we are His children!

I was in chains, and when I got free, I looked for a place to hide. I wanted to be invisible. But God wasn't having it. He made me visible, even though I didn't want to be. And now people are coming to me for counsel, listening to my God-given ideas, and recognizing my wisdom—and they don't even know who they're talking to!

But it's not me they're seeing: it's Jesus. Jesus is the desire of all nations according to the prophets (Haggai 2:7), though the nations hardly admit their desire goes by that name. Yet when people see God in me, many will be drawn to His light. And I will be able to express His words to them.

    LET'S PRAY....

Glory? Light? Radiance? These hardly seem to describe me, Lord. Yet if this is Your description of me —now or in the future —I want to grow into it daily. Let me hear —and reflect —Your glory.
