  • 22-361 THE GOOD NEWS BAD NEWS KINDA JESUS

TITLE: THE GOOD NEWS BAD NEWS KINDA JESUS

VERSE: No matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. 2 CORINTHIANS 1:20, NIV

If you’re a Christian and you’re honest with yourself, then you know that sometimes when God speaks, it doesn’t sound like what you want to hear. In fact, it sounds like the exact opposite of what you want to hear. And if the survey is any indication, most Christians don’t spend much time and energy listening for those kinds of things.

But I have some good news for you: there is a way to hear God in ways that will not only change your life but also give Him glory!

God isn't an angry, vengeful God who's looking for ways to punish you. He's a loving Father who wants to give you the best life possible.

He knows you're going to mess up sometimes, so He gives us full permission to listen for His "yes." That doesn't mean He endorses everything we desire or promises to fulfill every whim. But He is kindly predisposed toward us and is far more willing to give than we think He is. We tend to assume "no" as His default answer with an occasional "yes" thrown in, but it's really the other way around. We don't have to listen pessimistically—we can start listening expectantly!

When we hear the voice of God, it's usually in the form of a promise. We might be praying for something, or someone might be asking us to do something, and suddenly He makes it clear that He is on our side.

We can't help but get all excited about that—we know we've got His attention, and we're going to get what we want. But what happens when we don't get what we want?

It's easy to get discouraged when the things we ask for don't come true right away. When they don't come true at all! In fact, it can feel like God has forgotten about us completely.

But here's the thing: God never promised that our prayers will always be answered in exactly the way we imagined them. Instead, He promises that if we believe in Him enough to trust that He knows what's best for us (and you know what? He does), then when He answers our prayers with a "no," it's because He already has something better planned out for us than whatever we asked Him for in the first place!

That means we never need to listen pessimistically and can invest our time in hearing Him without fear of wasting it. He rewards those who seek Him with faith and high expectations.

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, I will not shy away from Your voice; Your perfect love overcomes all my fear. I run toward Your “yes” with an “amen” in my heart. Fulfill Your promise in me.

  • 22-360 WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS

    TITLE: WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS

VERSE: I long for the Lord more than sentries long for the dawn, yes, more than sentries long for the dawn. PSALM 130:6

Sometimes we have to encounter God. We just have to. The situation is desperate, the need is overwhelming, and the next step is too urgent, yet unclear. We need to feel God’s touch, hear the sound of His voice, and receive His answer to prayer. The crises of life drive us to Him, pleading for Him to intervene or even to whisper His will. In those moments, our souls long for Him more than sentries who wait for the dawn. Like watchmen on the walls, we scan the horizon for any hint of the rising sun. We wait for the morning. And wait some more.

We don’t always know how long we’ll have to wait for God’s answer or how many times He will ask us to trust Him before He answers—or if He will answer at all! But when we stand guard on our watchtower in this way, we aren’t just waiting around aimlessly; we are actively seeking out His face and listening carefully for His voice so that when He speaks, we might recognize it immediately and respond appropriately with action

There are times in life when we feel like we're standing on the wall, waiting and watching for something to happen. We may be waiting for a promotion, or for our next step toward our dream job, or for someone to say "yes" to us in some way. Those moments can feel really lonely and dark—like maybe this time the sun won't rise.

But here's what I've learned: The sun always rises. The sentries on the wall don't wonder whether the darkness will give way to the dawn; they only wonder exactly when. They don't have to fear that perhaps this time the sun won't rise, that maybe they will be stuck in some deep night’s perpetual shroud. The dawn will come. It always does. It may seem slow, like the watched pot that seems never to boil or a long-anticipated vacation that seems like it may never arrive. Eventually, the darkness breaks and the light shines. The day of favor comes.

When we're waiting for something, it can feel like an eternity.

We feel like our whole lives are on hold, and we're just waiting for that thing to show up so we can get to the next step. And if we're watching the clock, or using some other method of measuring time, it can be really frustrating when nothing seems to happen.

Waiting for God can be a lot like that. We may not know when He'll come—or if He'll come at all—and that can make us feel like there's no end in sight. But He does come! He breaks through like the rising sun, dispelling the darkness of our desperation and bringing warmth to the cold places of our lives. He responds faithfully to whatever prayers we've prayed with persistent faith. He speaks to ears that remain open. Like the watchmen who wait for the morning, we will see the sunrise.

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, You have seen my seasons of desperation. You know how I’ve watched for You more than the sentries long for the dawn. Reward my wait —my persistent, hopeful wait —with the sight tired eyes need to see: You. I look to You as the light that interrupts all the darkness in my life.

  • 22-359 UNIQUE TO HUMAN HISTORY

    TITLE: UNIQUE TO HUMAN HISTORY

VERSE: Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. LUKE 2:19

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and said, "You will conceive a child and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."

Mary was shocked by this news. She knew that she was engaged to Joseph and they had not yet consummated their marriage. They were waiting until after they were married to experience sexual relations. And she certainly did not consider herself worthy of having a child with God’s glory on her face!

But even though the angel’s words were strange and unexpected, Mary believed them anyway. She took them at face value, not really knowing what they meant but believing that God would do what He said He would do anyway.

Elizabeth blessed Mary because Mary believed God would do what He said. Many people wouldn’t have believed, finding the angel’s words too bizarre to be literally true. But Mary accepted them, and Elizabeth expressed a profound biblical principle when she saw her: Just as Abraham was declared righteous because He believed God’s impossible words (Genesis 15:6), Mary was declared blessed because she believed Him too (Luke 1:23). Those who trust God’s extraordinary words will find Him extraordinarily faithful.

When God does something in our lives that is unique to human history, it’s wonderful to be able to relate it to some story or character in His Word. That makes it easier to see how we are fitting into His overall work and His ways.

But when He does something unusual in our lives, we walk through our circumstances with both caution and awe. We ask lots of questions. We wonder how things will turn out. We treasure the possibility that we have been chosen to do something specific for God’s purposes.

The birth of Jesus is unique to human history. No one has ever been born in such a miraculous way as this child.

Shepherds in the nearby fields saw angels and came to visit the new King. What would the life of this child look like? How would Mary and Joseph handle the responsibility of parenting Him? If this life was beginning with such fanfare, what miracles would come in the next few years? Mary kept these things in her heart. She treasured them and pondered them constantly. She held the work and words of God with a sacred wonder. She modeled how we are to respond when the divine agenda intersects our lives in a miraculous way.

    LET'S PRAY

Lord, sometimes I’m amazed at what You’re doing in my life. I don’t take Your words for granted. I won’t assume the ordinary in my relationship with You. I choose to walk with wonder in every step You lead me to take.

  • 22-358 I GUESS WE'LL SEE

    TITLE: I GUESS WE'LL SEE

VERSE: You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said. LUKE 1:45

It's not easy to believe in God, but it's not supposed to be.

Almost every Christian affirms a strong belief that God will do what He said He will do—that He will keep His promises, fulfill the blessings described in His Word, and prove Himself faithful and true in our lives. Yet if we're honest, in the back of our minds is a very subtle doubt: "I hope so." Or "we'll see."

That's okay; God understands. When a man told Jesus he believed while also asking Jesus to help his unbelief (Mark 9:24), Jesus followed through with a miracle. But that isn't ideal. Jesus also gave promises about prayer that were conditioned on not doubting (Matthew 21:21), and marveled at His disciples' unbelief in the midst of storms (Mark 4:40). His desire is for us to believe He will do what He said. And His blessing is often reserved only for those who believe.

    I guess we'll see.

It's a hard truth to swallow, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. We don't want God's blessings to depend on the purity of our faith, but some of them are. The size of our faith doesn't seem to be an issue; all we need is faith the size of a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20). But the quality of our faith may certainly have an effect on what we receive from God. Several passages of Scripture urge that our faith should not be mixed with doubt. He saves some of His most precious blessings for those who believe He will give them.

We don't know exactly what Elizabeth said to Mary, but we do know that she blessed her.

And we can guess why: Mary believed God would do what He said. Many people wouldn't have believed, finding the angel's words too bizarre to be literally true. But Mary accepted them, and Elizabeth expressed a profound biblical principle when she saw her. Just as Abraham was declared righteous because He believed God's impossible words, Mary was declared blessed because she believed Him too. Those who trust God's extraordinary words will find Him extraordinarily faithful.

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, I believe. If You said it, it’s always true, no matter how strange or unlikely it seems. I accept Your ability to do the impossible, and I gratefully receive the blessing that comes through believing.

  • 22-357 FROM THE HEART OF GOD

TITLE: FROM THE HEART OF GOD

VERSE: The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. JOHN 15:19

“The world does not naturally accept Me. Only by My Spirit can I be welcomed into the world and into your life. Why? Because My ways and the world’s ways are at odds with one another. Remember the counterfeit kingdom that wages war against My true Kingdom. This false system is based on independence and pride, not on dependence and worship. All of its ways are strategically calculated to shut Me out. Friendship with the world and its self-sufficient ways is tantamount to hostility toward Me and My life-giving Kingdom.

“This is why you can never expect to reconcile My voice with the other voices around you, especially those voices that reflect the thinking of the world rather than the heart of My Kingdom. There will be tension between what you hear from Me and what you hear elsewhere. Even the wise and godly around you are still emerging from the web of deception in the world, and their counsel may sometimes contradict My voice. Hear them, weigh what they say, but defer always to My voice. When I speak directly to your heart, My words may not fit the understanding or the assumptions of the people you know.

“For this reason, be careful with the pearls of revelation I have given you. Don’t share them indiscriminately. When you tell someone what I have told you personally, you may be submitting it to false judgment. Don’t keep everything private —you do need counsel —but learn to discern the wisdom of the world. Let your faith be stirred by My voice and not by the opinions of human beings. Be firm against every thought derived from the world’s wisdom and submissive to every thought that comes from the wisdom of My Spirit. I will lead you in much higher ways.”

Holy Spirit, I need discernment. It’s scary how much we are steeped in the wisdom of the world. Help me sort out all the voices I hear. Tune my ears to Your counsel and the counsel of those who know Your voice.

You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said. LUKE 1:45

  • 22-356 WISHFUL THINKING

    TITLE: WISHFUL THINKING

VERSE: Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. LUKE 1:38

It was the mother's imagination that saw Jesus enter her son's hospital room, lay His hands on her son's head, and mouth the words "Be healed." But it wasn't just her imagination: It was also an actuality—a reality that she'd wished for and had seen in her mind's eye.

The boy began to improve after that day. He got better reports from the doctors, his hair grew back after chemo, and he was soon discharged to go home and live a normal life.

Was it wishful thinking? Maybe. But maybe not. Maybe the mother's imagination was showing her something she couldn't see before—and making it real in the process.

Daniel's visions were in his mind. And if Daniel lived today, most of us would tell him not to trust what goes through his mind.

But what if God really did want to give him a vision? What if He had something more important to say than "Daniel, stop thinking"? And what if God knew we'd try to talk Daniel out of his visions?

We know our condition; our thinking gets distorted and we see through lenses colored with all sorts of biases and agendas. “No, Daniel,” we might tell him. “You can’t trust your imagination.”

Imagination is a powerful tool. If you’re ever in doubt about the power of your own mind, just think about how many times you’ve imagined yourself doing something amazing—like playing the piano or singing in front of thousands of people.

You’re probably wondering: “How could I have imagined that? I don’t even know how to play piano!” But that doesn’t matter. Your imagination is a force unto itself. It can conjure up possibilities and make them real. And if you let it run wild with God, it will do just that: it will make your redemption real.

    LET's PRAY...

Lord, I present my imagination to You for holy purposes. Fill it with pictures of Your purposes. Let me see the calling You have placed before me. Show me what You’re doing. And inspire me with my prayers or actions to step into the stories You present to me.

  • 22-355 IMMORAL TO EVERYONE

    TITLE: IMMORAL TO EVERYONE

VERSE: Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. LUKE 1:38

What a crazy time in Mary's life.

She probably had dreams about marriage and family, like most girls do, but she didn't expect it to involve a scandalous pregnancy that would appear immoral to everyone around her.

What was she thinking when the angel told her she would conceive God's Son by His Spirit? The honor and privilege could not have escaped her, but neither could the potential shame in the eyes of her family and community. How could she explain a once-in-forever phenomenon and expect people to believe her? Most wouldn't. She would begin her marriage to Joseph with a child on the way. And she wouldn't be publicly vindicated until several decades had passed and it became clear who Jesus was.

It’s hard to understand how Mary could have accepted such an assignment with no complaints. It was certainly a great sacrifice, and she must have been overwhelmed by the enormity of it all. But that’s just it: she was willing to do whatever God asked of her. Being chosen by God usually involves both an immense privilege and a great sacrifice, and many of us focus on the latter rather than the former. But Mary embraced the news that this assignment was given to her because she was highly favored. And this response gives us a glimpse into why she was chosen. She was ready to serve God in whatever instructions He gave.

It is easy to miss important things when you are too busy trying to figure out the details of life. But there is no better illustration of how to listen to God than this. He loves to hear a heart say “yes” before it understands the details, even when He upsets our plans with something bigger and stranger than we can grasp. Mary could not possibly have envisioned all that the rest of her life would entail, but she didn’t need to. God favored her with His plan, and her answer demonstrates why. She accepted the impossible simply because it was God’s word.

    LET'S PRAY...

Father, may everything You’ve said about me and to me, from all eternity past until now, come to pass exactly as You have said. I accept it —even before I know it and understand it.

  • 22-354 SILLY DONKEY!

    TITLE: SILLY DONKEY

VERSE: The LORD gave the donkey the ability to speak. “What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam. . . . Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the roadway with a drawn sword in his hand. NUMBERS 22:28, 31

The story of Balaam, who was hired to curse the Israelites, is a powerful illustration of how God will go to extreme measures to get our attention.

The donkey was a stubborn beast. It was not in the habit of listening to Balaam, and it certainly wasn’t about to start that day. So when Balaam approached, the donkey simply stopped, refusing to move another inch.

Balaam struck it repeatedly with his staff, but still, he got no response from the stubborn animal. He hit it even harder this time—and still, nothing happened! He struck again and again, until finally… he fell off his donkey!

It was at this moment that God opened Balaam’s eyes so that he could see what had been happening all along: an angel blocking the road! Balaam immediately fell down on his face before God and begged for forgiveness for what he had tried to do. And then God opened the donkey’s mouth too!

If you think God can't speak through a donkey, then you're forgetting that He created the universe in six days and can do anything He wants at any time through any means.

If He can speak the world into being by the sound of His voice, everything else is simple. A donkey talking for a few seconds? Not a problem. And more than a little humorous.

I mean, think about it: if God could use a donkey to speak to Balaam, why couldn't He use your dog to talk to you when you were at your lowest point? Or even your cat? Why couldn't He use your favorite pair of shoes or pillowcase or refrigerator magnet?

The truth is that God can speak through anything—and if He's speaking to you through something as simple as a silly donkey, then why not just listen?

If you are ever tempted to make fun of someone who has a message that seems like it's coming from a place of confusion or incompetence, remember this: God doesn't always use the most eloquent people to get His word out.

In fact, He often uses people who don't even know they're being used by Him.

If you've ever struggled to hear God's voice through a high-profile speaker or a powerful and popular book, He is asking you to strain for Him in other ways as well. Specifically, He is testing your ability to hear Him through that awkward misfit in the congregation or a grossly misspelled quote on Facebook.

If we tune out the unlikely—the crude messengers in our lives—we are unlikely to hear Him even in the obvious (as quite a few people in and around Bethlehem and Galilee found out during the time of Christ). The medium isn't the issue; the voice is. Listen everywhere!

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, there is no such thing as “unlikely” with You. I don’t care to be impressed by the medium. I simply need You. Test my hearing however You choose —even if You have to open the mouth of a beast.

  • 22-353 JESUS GIVES CLUES

    TITLE: JESUS GIVES CLUES

VERSE: We [run our race] by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. HEBREWS 12:2

The answer to every question in the Christian life is: Keep your eyes on Jesus.

The most important thing in the world is this: Keep your eyes on Jesus.

That’s not to say that other things aren’t important, but if we want to find our true selves, then we have to look at Jesus. He is the only one who can give us a true picture of God’s nature. He is the only one who can speak words straight from God’s mouth. And He will answer our prayers if we abide in Him as He promised us—and then ask whatever is on our hearts.

Jesus gives us ample cues about how to stay connected with God and bring the climate of heaven to earth. But whatever growth we desire, whatever promises we’ve been given, whatever calling and destiny we step into—it’s all through our life in Him.

We can be distracted by the tasks of the day, but that doesn't mean we have to lose focus on the top priority of our lives: Jesus. If we ever get distracted, we need to do whatever we can to regain it. We must keep Jesus front and center amid all the distractions and responsibilities of life. When we are fully living "in Him," not just as our God-given position but in our practical awareness, we don't just "get by." We are more alive than we have ever been.

For me, the most important thing I have discovered about hearing God's voice is that it starts with being connected to Jesus. When we are deeply connected with Him, He will speak to us. And when I say "deeply connected," I don't mean just once a week at church or around the dinner table. I mean every day, moment by moment.

You can hear God if you are aware of being deeply connected with Jesus moment by moment. He is in us and we are in Him. And all of life—every aspect of it—is based on that relationship.

    LET'S PRAY...

Jesus, it’s so easy to forget that it’s all about You. My life, my desire to follow God, my longing to hear His voice —it’s still all about You. As You live Your life within me, my heart softens toward God and my spiritual ears open up. So live fully, deeply, and boldly in every inch of my being.

  • 22-352 A LIGHTNING BOLT

    TITLE: A LIGHTNING BOLT

VERSE: The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. . . . In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!” PSALM 29:3-4, 9

    We’ve all been there.

We’ve all heard the voice of God, and we know it when we hear it. It’s loud and clear as a lightning bolt in our souls. But sometimes, it can be hard to recognize what we’re hearing.

The more you grow accustomed to God’s voice, the louder it sounds. What used to be a faint whisper—and dare we even follow such a subtle and tenuous word?—is now a lightning bolt in our souls. “The voice of God,” said Ignatius of Loyola, “having once penetrated the heart, becomes strong as the tempest and loud as the thunder.” Our sensitivities have increased, even though we think we’re still as hard of hearing as ever. How could we not heed what we’re hearing? It’s God! We recognize the sound.

I can't tell you how many times I've been walking down the street, and all of a sudden, I just feel like God's voice is speaking to me. It's almost like He's tapping me on the shoulder and saying, "Hey, listen up."

But sometimes I just don't know whether it was really Him or not. Maybe it's just something deep inside my own heart that I'm mistaking for Him?

So then what do I do? Do I ignore it? Do I run away from it? Or do I listen?

That's the thing: when you know in your heart that something is God talking to you, there's no escaping the implications. You can't just ignore it or pretend it didn't happen—you have to respond or else rebel in disobedience. The more we learn to recognize His voice, the less room there is for doubt or confusion about what He wants from us. Something in us compels us to align ourselves with His perspective, and we sense this connection with His Spirit and cannot ignore it.

The pursuit of God is a difficult thing. It's easy to get distracted by the world, and it's easy to forget that He is there. But when we do hear His voice, we can't help but shout "Glory!"

It's not that we wouldn't ignore Him anyway; it's just that sometimes He asks hard things of us, and it's much better than not hearing Him at all. Other people may be satisfied with a casual or distant relationship with God, but we asked at the beginning to know Him at all costs. When a heart loves the Lord deeply, it can't be content with long silences or unexplained gaps. We have to pursue Him until His voice resonates within us again. That's what we were designed for!

    LET'S PRAY...

Lord, it often seems that I’ve made no progress at all. Yet when I recognize Your whispers within me, they sound more compelling than ever. Echo them loudly and clearly. Let me not escape them. Deep in my spirit, turn up the volume of Your words.
