  • Power Project Episode #45: Rise With Purpose, a chat with Rita Bautista
In this week’s episode, I chat with Rita Bautista, host of Empowerment & All That. Rita & I had the opportunity to meet at Rachel Hollis’s RISE conference last weekend. Rita is using her podcast platform as a way to empower and inspire women to lead purpose-filled lives. She believes that everything she went through in life has brought her to this place to help others. In her words “When you go through enough in your life, you don’t want anyone else to go through it.” She discusses how therapy is not only great but necessary because people will only truly believe in you if you believe in yourself.

Rita and I share a few highlights from our RISE conference weekend and shine a light on what it looks like to realize your purpose and fully walk in it as well.

  • Power Project Episode #44: What to Know when Starting a Podcast
In this week's episode, we answer your question! What do I need to know when starting a podcast?

Podcasting: What to know when starting…And what I wish I would have known.

What are your goals with your podcast
To inspire/educate/entertain is great, but what are tangible goals
How many subscribers do you want?
How many downloads do you want?
    SMART goals 30/60/90
    Content planner: Themes
Choose a theme you want to speak to each month and line out your weekly, quarterly, monthly, and annual plan.

    Solo Episodes or Guests
In the beginning I was doing only Guest Spotlights but my audience asked for more solo episodes which brings me to point #2:
Listen to your audience to decide if they want interviews or solos.

Where will you find your guests? **Make certain your guest aligns with your mission**
    FB Groups
    Podcast Movement
    She Podcasts
    Women Who Podcast
    Instagram

    #podcasthost

What to Send Guests before an interview
Time block with Calendly the times you are available for interviews.
Email link to guests so that they can schedule an interview that’s convenient for both of you.
Email guest thanking them for agreeing to the show. Include subjects that you would like to cover on the episode. If you have specific questions to ask, list them. Give main goal of the episode. What do you want your listeners to gain?
Let them know how you will contact them and what they need to know for recording For example, do they need to download an app, should they be on a desktop or their phone? Do they need headphones?

Will you break for holidays or Summer?
Two schools of thought on this
    1. You’re in control & have the freedom to set your schedule
    2. You have to show up every single week consistently to build listener base.

    How often will you publish?
    Weekly, BI-weekly, Monthly?
How many episodes will be in a season?
    What day/time do you post?
Not same time zone or day for all listeners
In the beginning I started out with Tuesdays but changed to Thursday. Tuesdays are hectic for me & while I have episodes pre-scheduled now, if something changes that week & I want to bump an episode in order to publish something more relevant, I have time to recored, edit, & upload.
The show posts at 6:00 AM so that people can listen while doing an early morning workout or on their commute.
My episodes also average 35 minutes because the average commute is about 30 minutes. Listeners can easily speed up to 1.5x listening speed

    Show Notes:
Type up your episode first whether in script form or bullet point, and then transfer to show notes. Why are notes important? People hear things in your episode they later want to go back and look up. It’s easier to scan the notes than re-listen to the episode.
In Notes, make sure to include links for guests to be reached, or merchandise to be purchased. If there is a discount code, include it in the notes.
A PDF/ downloadable Freebie is a great resource for your audience and can easily be converted from notes.
Transfer notes into a workbook or guide that your audience can later download.
This is a way to link the episode to your podcast or even build your email list while giving your listeners something tangible to continue the conversation.

    Pitching your show to guests
Create a bio for your show that tells what your mission is about and what your goal is for your audience each week. If you are brand new, don’t be intimidated by download numbers, etc. If your mission is strong enough and you can let your guest know why your audience needs to hear from them, your guest will say yes.
If it is a big name guest, make certain that you offer to promote their book, workshop, conference, etc…. Free advertising is golden!

    Promoting the podcast
After recording, send guests the link and ask them to please promote and tag you on all of their social media platforms. If they have a website or newsletter suggest they share the episode there.
SELF PROMOTE: social media, in person, via email. Tell everyone about your podcast AND ask for reviews as well as subscriptions. This is what helps your ratings, gets you to the top of the charts, increases downloads and brings on more guests.

  • Power Project Episode #42 Traveling With Kids
In this week's episode, I share tips and tricks of traveling with kids.
After a vacation that left us homesick and missing our kiddos 8 years ago, my husband and I vowed to take our kiddos on as many vacations with us as possible from then on.
Over the past few years, we have done just that. So, I thought I would pass on my favorite travel hacks I've learned while traveling with kids.

First up is flying: I can totally understand how you could be freaked out by the thought of flying with children! I understand. I was too. However, I firmly believe that the younger you start flying with your kids, the easier it will be. Our kiddos were on planes before they were a year old and now are seasoned champs. Here are some tips I've learned along the way about flying with
    kids.

    TAKE OFF & LANDING
How to keep their ears from hurting:
INFANT: Nurse or provide a bottle for these times
TODDLER: Bring chewy snacks such as gummies
    BIG KID: Bring gum

    TRAVELING THROUGH THE AIRPORT
INFANT: A wearable wrap or carrier is the easiest way to get through the airport with a baby.
TODDLER: An umbrella stroller is the easiest to get through security and can be checked at the jet bridge. Rideable luggage is great as well!
LITTLE/BIG KID: A personal backpack with pillow, blanket & activities that are airplane friendly.

The most important thing to remember is that you are not the first person to fly with children. If you are seated next to a grumpy person that doesn't deal well with your fussy baby, that's on them. As long as you are doing your best to keep your child happy and entertained, you're doing your job. However, you might
offer to buy them a cocktail...

    ACTIVITIES TO TAKE
IPADS: Make sure these are charged & have the airline app installed beforehand.
KID HEADPHONES: Earbuds hurt their little ears.
STICKER BOOKS: not coloring books as the crayons roll all over the plane.

Teach your kiddos the value of looking up at the flight attendant and saying please and thank you. A polite child that acknowledges the staff has earned both my kids and myself "on the house" treats. Kids with manners are becoming few and far between. Make sure yours are part of the select few and it might
    just earn them a cookie.

Bottom line, I get it. I know that flying with kids can be stressful and exhausting, but at the end of the day, you will be so grateful that you took the trip and made the memories. Just don't forget to pack your patience.....and an airplane bottle of wine for when you feel like you might lose your mind.

    WHERE TO STAY:
Book a VRBO or Air B&B rather than an expensive hotel at a resort. This will save money by providing a kitchen you can cook in, plus you have more room to spread out.
Get a condo so that you will have access to swimming pools, grills, etc.

    Hotels:
Embassy Suites with adjoining rooms are great for families and have plenty of space to spread out. Ask for mini fridge if you need to refrigerate medicine, formula, or breast milk.
Most hotels have rollaway cribs and you don't have to bring one from home.
You can also request a microwave if your room doesn't have one.

3 TIPS TO KNOW WHEN TRAVELING INTERNATIONALLY:
Keep everyone’s passports together in a zipper pouch inside of your carry on. Make copies of passports and place in separate carry on (husband’s) just in case something happens.

Customs lines are long. Bring snacks and give the kids electronics. Most of the time, if you and your kids are polite, an attendee will usher you into a less crowded line to get the kids through.

Different cultures = Cultural Differences and this can mean topless women on beaches. Explain to your children that it's just their culture and to turn their eyes away.

    ROAD TRIPS:
Use these as a time to teach kids historical facts
Google places along the way and tell kids what happened throughout history in that place. Teach them about the geography of the places they visit. Make sure they understand the area they are visiting.

Buy groceries and eat healthy along the way:
Pack lunches and snacks in car. Stop at roadside park to have a picnic.
Stock up on prepared frozen ready to cook meats and vegetables.
Crunchy snacks: almonds, cashews, apples, pickles are great for road trips.

  • Power Project Episode #41: Parenting 101
How to Raise Contributing Members of Society (and hopefully
not screw them up too much…)
    Parenting 101:
    • A guide to New Mamas
    • Breastfeed/Bottlefeed
    • Co-sleep/sleep train
    • Advice from well-meaning morons
    Growing as a Parent
    • Limit your child’s activities
    • Stand firm in conviction
    • Let them bleed
    • Be present
    • Only say yes to what you want to
    • DO NOT throw a video game, phone, or tablet at your kid and expect it to raise
    them.
    Parenting teens
As Teens go through Puberty, their brains change.
    • Become emotional versus rational
    • Experience fear & anxiety
    • Testosterone’s job is to re-organzie the brain during puberty
    • Seek acceptance & identity in peers rather than family.
    • Need to know they are loved & accepted regardless. Unconditional grace.
    • Brain begins to evolve & kids start thinking of future plans. Ask them questions
    to encourage a growth mindset:
    • QUESTIONS TO ASK TEENS
    • Where do you want to go to college?
    • What do you want to study in college?
    • If you could have any job in the world what would it be?
    • If you could live anywhere where would it be?
    • What does your future home look like?
    • If you have $1 million to support any cause or charity of your choice what will it
    be?
    • What do you want to be known for?
    • Do you want to get married?
    • How many kids do you plan to have?
    Raising Men
    SPEAKING TO BOY MOMS
    • Your boys will become men, and hopefully husbands and fathers. They
have to learn how to become a Man from their Dads. We have to cut the
apron strings and let them grow alongside their fathers.
    • We also teach them how to treat women by how we teach them to treat
us. It is our job to teach our sons to be gentlemen and what is expected
of them. Chivalry is not dead, but somewhere along the way, women quit
making it be important. If it matters to you, teach it to your sons.
    • Open doors, say please, thank you, , & Yes Ma’am, kiss your
    Mama!
    • Teach them the value of hard work. Work hard. Play hard.
    • Attach them to Purpose. Get them involved in serving
others. Teach them to be kind & advocate for others.
    • Point out their admirable qualities that makes them who they
are. Tell them positive leadership characteristics they have.
    Speak Life.
    • Don’t be afraid to talk about hard subjects: they will respect
you for treating them as humans.

  • Power Project Episode #40: Discovering Your Purpose
This week, I dive into what it means to walk in purpose and truly follow God's calling. I share about what it looks liked for God to put a calling on your life and for your to answer.

I share takeaways about how to find your purpose:
As a kid, what did you dream of being?

What would your biggest cheerleader say is your biggest talent?

What would people say you're really good at?

When do you feel most fulfilled?

When do you feel most inspired?

What brings you the most joy?

These are common questions that can lead you to your purpose.

This week I had the opportunity to sit down with my friend Kindra Hall. I first had the pleasure of hearing Kindra speak in person back in 2017. She’s a charismatic speaker with contagious energy and shares with us what it means to craft a purposeful story that engages your audience.

Kindra Hall is President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective, a consulting firm focused on the strategic application of storytelling to today’s communication challenges.
What began as a storytelling assignment in 5th grade, grew into a passion for not only telling stories, but a mastery for teaching others the methods and science of storytelling so they can better tell their own.

She was a National Champion storyteller (yes, they have those), member of the Board of Directors of the National Storytelling Network and has her master’s degree in communications where she conducted original research studying the role of storytelling in defining and revealing organizational culture.

Her much anticipated book, Stories That Stick, will be released by Harper Leadership in the fall of 2019. She gives us an insider secret that it will be out September 24.

Kindra lives in Manhattan with her husband, young son and daughter. When she is not traveling around the world speaking, Kindra can usually be found at spin class or in Central Park with her family.

    How do I define self-confidence?
How do I face fears and what advice would I give others looking to do the same?
