Welcome to the third collaboration between Deep in the Weeds’ Producers podcast and AgriCULTURED, a festival which showcases and connects the produce and people of northern Tasmania, or Lutruwita as it’s called in Aboriginal culture. This is a special part of the world, with beautiful, fertile lands, true seasons, and rich traditions. So far, we’ve heard from duck farmer Bec Rumble, vegetable grower Wouter Sels and today we’re talking to winemaker Linda Morice, of Sinapius.
Sinapius is in the Pipers Brook wine region, north of Launceston and inland from Bass Strait. It’s a closely-planted vineyard, with mostly pinot noir, chardonnay and gamay, produced with low intervention techniques to express the region.
Working this land and living in this community has been a story of determination, strong values, tragedy and resilience.

Today, we meet Wouter Sels from Seven Springs Farm. Wouter farms pretty, hilly country nestled in forest almost two hours west of Launceston. Born into a Belgian farming family, Wouter, his wife and their three young children live off-grid, feeding themselves and supplying the community and a select group of chefs with delicious and nutritious produce. Life is somewhat isolated, but it’s rich in connection.

Our first podcast in this series is with duck farmer Bec Rumble, from Lone Goose Farm in the Meander Valley. Like many small farmers in northern Tassie, she’s a corporate escapee from the ‘big island’, having moved from Melbourne with her husband Paul, and learning a lot about Muscovy ducks very, very quickly. Narie and her partner Mark didn’t plan to get into capers but somehow this curious plant found them and turned their retirement into a period of dawn rising and hard toil. They’re busy growing, picking and processing a crop that turns into a product they love for its versatility, nourishment and opportunity to share and communicate.

Robert Jones was born on Stoney Rises, the third generation on his family’s sheep farm in central Victoria. In 1985, he saw the need for diversification in a traditional livestock enterprise so he launched Tuki, a trout fishing venue where visitors could come to catch a fish and - if they wanted - have it cooked for them on the property. Nearly 40 years later, Tuki is a restaurant, farm and accommodation destination, with an exciting new dining chapter underway.
