  • Wild at Heart (1990)

We’re hitting up some “Strange Love” themed movies this month and we got the second of our double dose of Nicolas Cage this week and it’s also kind of an Elvis week because Sailor (Uncle Nic) just got out of jail and he and his girl Lula (Laura Dean) are in for a wild ride unless Lula’s mother has her way. Yep, we’re talking about David Lynch’s adaptation of the Barry Gifford Neo noir novel “Wild at Heart”. It’s called that, you see, because the whole world is wild at heart and weird on top. A fine example being Bobby Peru’s mouth (Willem Dafoe). It’s a violent road movie fever dream with some Wizard of Oz mixed in. A divisive flick when it came out but Harry Dean Stanton and Jack Nance are in it so I don’t know what the haters are talking about.

  • Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

One of our themes this month is “Strange Love” and we’re getting a double dose of Uncle Nicky this week and why not sit down with the whole family and watch a movie where Nicholas Cage drinks himself to death while Elizabeth Shue watches? Yeah, we’re talking about the Mike Figgis movie “Leaving Las Vegas” from 1995. It also stars French Stewart, Aunt Jackie from “Roseanne”, Mister Ernst from “Hey Dude” and Lou Rawls as “Concerned Cabbie”. Sexy, sleazy and sad as shit. Just the way we like it. Now slurp this bourbon out of my navel.

  • Elvis (2022)

This month we’ve been catching up on some hyped up movies we missed from last year and we finally got around to Baz Luhrmann’s big bright biopic “Elvis” starring a pretty damn great Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in a rare psychopathic performance as Colonel Tom Parker. Baz brings his extra into it and it’s quite the spectacle. How’s the drama? Does it goof? Bob wants this movie to goof real bad. Hear us talk about it.

  • Phantom Thread (2017)

The heavy hitters roll on this month as we touch upon our theme of “Strange Romance” and we get to a Paul Thomas Anderson movie that seemed to come quietly at it’s time and now we revisit Reynolds Woodcock (lol), dressmaker for House Woodcock (lol) who has fallen in love with a pretty waitress, Alma, who practically crashes into his life in a way he can’t let go. It’s a story of two people who are drawn to each other until they finally discover the elements that make them inseparable. We’re talking about “Phantom Thread” from 2017 and our boy DDL is in it so you know it humps. It’s a strange love indeed.

  • Aftersun (2022)

This month, one of our themes is “Catching Up” and we’re watching some of the acclaimed movies we missed last year and HOLY SHIT 2022 WAS POPPING OFF! This will probably end up being our most heavy hitter choices this month. Hell, this week is all bangers. We watched Charlotte Wells heart rendering debut feature film “Aftersun” starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio and Bob cried like a baby at the end. He also cried, on camera near the end of this discussion. Also, he cried again when he edited this episode. What a pussy. Go check this movie out. It’s something else. I gotta say, the 1 star google reviews for Tár were much funnier than the 1 star google reviews for Aftersun.

  • Tár (2022)

Todd Field’s “Tár”, starring Kate Blanchett, is considered one of the best movies of last year and probably one of the more controversial. Though people in the US barely saw it in the theater, it’s grown a creeping buzz around it. Now it’s on Prime Video and more people will watch it and I recommend they do and tell us about it. Mondays are our “Catching Up” movies for the month and, so far, 2022 looks like it was a year of some pretty great movies. I mean, “Tár” and “Black Adam” alone…

ALSO you should really sign this petition here: https://chng.it/bLvF4cFWfM to get Lydia Tár uncancelled and also to demand the Berlin Philharmonic publicly apologize and then maybe we can get her to hang out with me. This is very important.

  • Crimes of the Future (2022)

This month we’re discussing movies about strange love as well as catching up on buzz worthy movies from last year and this film covers both. Our very first Cronenberg movie for the show and it’s the most recent and theres wound fucking in it so what more do you need to know? We’re talking about David Cronenberg’s CRIMES OF THE FUTURE starring Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux & Kristen Stewart. When you live in a world without pain, that leaves a vacuum that only horniness can fill. Also in that vacuum will come an organ that is regrowing that you have to keep cutting out. You’re gonna be bringing scalpels into the bedroom after you watch this piece of work. It’s body and tech, bruh. You know who made this. You ever fellate a wound before? I’ll stop.

  • Live and Let Die (1973)

Every month or so we generate a movie completely at random to watch and discuss and we happened to land on our very first 007 movie , 1978’s “Live and Let Die” directed by Guy Hamilton and starring Roger Moore in his first role as James Bond. Angela grew up watching James Bond, Bob saw Goldeneye at the movies once 28 years ago and barely remembers it. How do we handle a fresh viewing of this adaptation of a pop culture icon? How bad of a person is James Bond? How many venereal diseases has this guy contracted? How come you never see the Bond girl he ends up with in the next movie? Is he killing them? He’s killing them, probably. We randomly generate another movie at the end for our next discussion.

  • RRR (2022)

We’re starting off July HOT with a double theme and we’re reserving Mondays for movies from last year that had buzz that we have yet to see. We’ve been seeing some goods stuff lately and I don’t think July is gonna let up because we’re starting it off with S.S. Rajamouli’s new classic Telugu Indian epic “RRR” and holy shit it this something to see. Two Indian revolutionaries reimagined as great rivals, friends and superheroes. It’s a breezy 3 hours, it’s on Netflix (as of this writing) and holy shit that escape scene. Rajamouli’s movie hits where epic directors like Zack Snyder seem to miss. If it’s too fiery for you then, rest assured, there’s water power here too. And tiger power. And friendship fusion. And singing and dancing, of course.

  • My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)

It’s time to say goodbye to this month’s theme, MOVIES ARE GAY, but we won’t be so cold about it like a department store purging all of it’s rainbow displays a day after the percieved profiteering window. We all know, deep in our hearts, that movies will always be gay. At least a little bit. We send off our theme with a movie that has an abundance of what so many modern movies lack, charm and charisma. We have an Honest-to-God, Gay Rom-com from 1985 and the layered commentary of race and class in Margaret Thatcher’s England doesn’t overshadow the romance with overt seriousness. A first generation Pakistani (Omar) reunites with a childhood friend turned racist street thug (Johnny) and they both revitalize a struggling launderette and rekindle a love for one another. It also happens to be Daniel Day-Lewis’s breakout role. We watched Stephen Frear’s “My Beautiful Launderette” and it’s a breath of fresh air and the perfect movie to end our Month with after all this sad shit we’ve recently watched. It’s on MAX if you want to check it out.
