  • Love Tutoring Festival 2021 Podcast #4 - Reflections from 3 National Tutoring Programme (NTP) Tutors

After a wonderful day of NTP conversation at the Festival, we ended the day with a view from the frontline. Linda, Jolyon and Hazel take us through what they've learnt.

From steep learning curves with the tech to changes to the way a tutor should approach a session, the NTP has brought about a shift in the way tutoring is viewed in this country. While higher level conversations about the direction of the Programme are important, we can't forget the boots on the ground. Those making the change happen day in, day out.

If you have been working on the NTP this year, much of what our 3 guests discuss here will resonate with you. If you'd like to get involved, this conversation will tell you whether that's the right decision or not for you.

    • To check out the Tuition Partners pillar of the NTP, for agencies and organisations, visit nationaltutoring.org.uk/tuition-partners-funding-round.
    • To check out the Academic Mentors pillar, for individual tutors, visit nationaltutoring.org.uk/ntp-academic-mentors or complete this short Typeform to register your interest for our free, open-access Information Session with Randstad, the new Supplier of the NTP, on Wednesday 18th August 2021.

(And if you think your access to the Festival is OVER, then think again! You can still catch every recording to the free sessions by clicking here. And if you'd like access to our suite of 6 CPD-accredited workshops, then all you have to do is purchase the Β£68 ticket on our website at qualifiedtutor.org/community/love-tutoring-festival/#register and you'll get immediate access to all those recordings)

Over 8 weeks of self-paced learning, interactive live sessions with peers and expert facilitation at every step of the way, you'll set yourself apart in a crowded space.

  • Supporting Young People to Make Safe Choices about Drugs: An Exploration of Decisions, Relationships and Happiness in Children

Since the death of her son, Dan, in 2014, Fiona Spargo-Mabbs has dedicated her life to supporting young people to make safe choices about drugs. Now we turn to tutors.

A tutor has a unique position in a young person's life
, different to that of a parent or a teacher. And Fiona has important words of wisdom for tutors and the role they can play in helping students transition from one phase of school to the next.

Tutors so often work with students at crucial moments in their education and it is at precisely these moments that students need the most support; they are at their most vulnerable when under exam pressure and when changing schools. Listen in from [18:50] to hear Fiona’s expert advice for tutors.

Fiona is the Director and Founder of the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation, who work to increase the understanding around drugs and alcohol. We urge you to check out their suite of workshops, training programmes, resources and community, whether you or your children have been affected by drugs and alcohol or not.

As per the conversation we ended the episode with, if you'd like to get in touch to discuss how the tutoring sector could work with the drugs and alcohol education sector, then please email [email protected].

  • The 11+, ISEB, SATs, GCSE & A-level Resource Group: How It Can Help You as a Parent, Student and Educator

Many parents and educators have turned to online communities for support and resources since March 2020. There are very few groups who have provided more than Agness O'Brien's.

The 11+, ISEB, SATs, GCSE & A-level Resource Group, newly Affiliate Partners of TTA (pretty special for a Facebook group) and recently partnering with Qualified Tutor, provides a wealth of resources, live events, emotional support, helpful guidance and learning materials to over 13,000 members. Since last spring, the group has more than doubled and continues to grow every day.

The equation is simple: if you'd like to get access to resources and support from thousands of educators, parents and specialists stretching back over 5 years, then this is the place to be. And it's all down to Agness and her wonderful team of admins and moderators.

By signing up, you'll also immediately find a short introductory video that gives info on all the moving parts of the group, including crucially how to navigate the thousands of resources and posts. Once podcast systems have reached a point where videos can be posted in show notes, that video will be up quicker than you can say ...

  • Love Tutoring Festival 2021 Podcast #2 - How to Run a Successful Tutoring Agency

We brought together agency leaders and heads of tuition from 3 highly successful, but markedly different, tutoring organisations: Helen Kenworthy, Georgina Green and Harry Cobb.

Helen Kenworthy: Founder of The Complete Works, a teaching service that creatively provides learning programmes for students of all ages
Georgina Green: Founder of Green Tutors, STEM specialists based in Hertfordshire and training partners of Qualified Tutor
Harry Cobb: Head of Tuition at Bonas MacFarlane, prestigious agency that mentors students and provides educational advice to parents across the globe

From how we deal with new clients and new tutors to the process of matching the right tutors to the right students to the motivations behind why tutors join a particular agency, this conversation had it all (in the field of running an agency).

And it beautifully tied together the many conversations that we had on the Tuesday of the Love Tutoring Festival, including the importance of values in a tutoring business and the importance of knowing your client before going into business with them.

  • Love Tutoring Festival 2021 Podcast #1 - Neurodiversity and Accessibility in the Field of Learning & Living Differences

Welcome to the first of our Late Night Live Podcasts from the Love Tutoring Festival. Our Monday podcast welcomed on Nina Jackson, Amanda Cremona and Clio Tucker.

    Nina Jackson is 'the Ninja'.
Amanda Cremona is the tutor that every student with dyslexia needs to work with.
Clio Tucker is the student who 'failed her A-levels', and was oh so enriched by it.

The topics discussed were varied and the conversation was aided admirably by participation from our live audience. We began with a true discussion on the advancements of accessibility in tech, followed by the impact of neurodiversity on learning, before drawing the conversation to a close with a look at the widely superfluous nature of homework and the effect it has on many students' learning.

Ilana King is one of the few 7+ entrance specialists. With a new training course and book, Ilana has given tutors and parents the opportunity to learn and grow.

Ilana is the Founder of Education Pathfinder, an educational consultancy business that has helped hundreds of parents plot the right path for their child. As part of her 7+ work, Ilana has recently written a book for parents who want to know more about the 7+ exam, and specifically for those parents who cannot afford a 7+ tutor. This book, The Parents’ Handbook for the 7+ Entrance Exams, can be found at amazon.co.uk/dp/B093N2CQ37.

While the 7+ entrance route has traditionally been the remit of the more affluent families in London, Ilana is committed to making it more accessible to more parents.

Here at Qualified Tutor, we're particularly interested in Ilana's commitment to training tutors too. If you'd like to become an effective 7+ tutor, there's only one place to look: Ilana's special training course, which can be found at educationpathfinder.co.uk/six-months-to-becoming-a-7-specialist.

  • What It Really Means to Move from Teaching to Tutoring, and What Tutors Need to Know about the National Tutoring Programme: In Conversation with Sharon Cawley

Sharon Cawley is a pioneer of the partnership between tutors, teachers and schools. She has a huge following of teachers, tutors and small business owners ... and rightly so.

Sharon started her career as an English teacher in 1994. Today, Sharon runs the hugely successful Conexus Tuition which currently works with over 4000 children in schools.

Sharon does not shy away from discussing her own journey from teaching to tutoring which, in 2012, consisted of being left without work, on the dole. Just 8 years later, Sharon heads up an NTP Tuition Partner organisation.

More importantly though, she'd like to meet Greg Davies, and potentially marry him too. If you know how to make this happen, please get in touch.

Finally, you can hear Sharon as part of the NTP Partners&Schools Roundtable at the Love Tutoring Festival on Thursday 1st July at 11am, alongside Manning's Tutors, Action Tutoring and EM Tuition. Grab your tickets at qualifiedtutor.org/community/love-tutoring-festival/.
