After hearing the talented Steve Wasik on the You Own The Experience Podcast with Lauren Jones & Rob Mann, I knew Steve would be a great guest!  Not only is he super talented within the staffing space, but he is also striving hard to become that ultimate QB or leader of his household.  For nearly 18 years, Steve has been successful in many roles inside of Insight Global.  Now,  he is the Vice President of Culture & Strategy at Compass, a division of Insight Global, one of the nation's leading staffing providers.   Compass was created to help organizations reach their fullest potential. In today's conversation, we learn how Steve and Carley are busy raising their two boys, Lucas & Caleb.  Additionally, we learned about Steve's parents, who grew up in Michigan and would later divorce and remarry.  One thing I learned about Steve is that we both lost our father and discussed our dads' impact on it during our conversation.   As you will hear, Steve is very positive and brings incredible energy!  After hearing about his father, it was apparent this is where that skill was passed down!  You will listen to one of the best stories of creativity from Steve's Dad (and a little bend of the truth) to make an impact on his children.

As an entrepreneur who works from home, Steve shared his passion for sharing responsibility as a father & husband.  This spoke to me for sure and is something I'm working hard on every day!

Thanks to the brilliant idea from Kelly Hansen, we welcome Cam Cleeland, the legendary TE from the prestigious University of Washington, to the show today!  Cam also last played for the St. Louis Rams and the New England Patriots of the NFL before being drafted in the second round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. 

Cam Cleeland recently joined former Doak Walker Award-winning tailback Greg Lewis to the Washington Huskies football radio broadcasts for 2021, Huskies Sports Properties announced today.  Cleeland replaces Damon Huard as the color analyst during play-by-play of the Husky football radio broadcasts, while Lewis joins Dave "Softy" Mahler and Dick Baird as the "Husky Honks" providing pregame, halftime and post-game analysis.  Cleeland, who was teammates with Huard on the UW's 1995 Pac-10 co-championship team as well as on the 2002 New England Patriots.

Today, we talk to Cam, the dad.  We learn how he was raised by a military father who instilled many values of hard work, teamwork, grit, and resilience.  We learn about the impact his mother had on him as a young man, too. We learn about growing up in the Skagit Valley of Washington.  Additionally, we discussed the power of having the right mindset in life and how we are both working hard to teach our kids this skill.  One of the key takeaways from this podcast will be to always "be ready" to teach.   Cam instilled the importance of giving more than you receive and also always being accountable in every life decision.

Our next guest is one of my favorite people I worked with during my 20 years at Kforce, and his name is Mark Biscoe, who has come up of retirement (just like Tom Brady) to share his wisdom and experience with companies.     With over 35 years of experience in the IT Staffing and Consulting industry, Mark is a seasoned leader with passion, expertise, and a proven record in driving enterprise growth and expansion through both organic and M&A strategies.   Before coming out of retirement at Eliassen, Mark spent time with his grandchildren and family but felt he had more to provide the industry of staffing.

His company now provides the following services:

Today, we talk to Mark, the dad, and the grandfather.  We learn about his upbringing and how his parents impacted him as a father.  Mark and his wonderful wife, Terry, have been married for 38 years and have three fantastic children who are all accomplishing great things in their careers.  

In my experience working with Mark, he was and continues to be a fantastic leader who brings positive energy.  He also is a great teacher, which I believe he gained from his father, a teacher & coach.   Unfortunately, Mark lost his father in 2020 to a stroke which hit home for me, given my father passed away in 2021.   Mark would always share a vulnerable story between him and his mom and the challenges she faced with an addiction issue that has since been resolved.  Very powerful.

Our next guest, Bret Harrison,  was kindly introduced by the talented Jay Webb, who was a former guest on our podcast!  Bret is a very talented sales and marketing executive who leads with curiosity and empathy.  More importantly, he has been married for 37 years to his wonderful wife Kim and also is the father of three grown children.  

Bret grew up in SE Idaho in a family where the value of hard work was taught and shown daily.  In fact, Bret's father, at 80 years old, still drives a truck!  He learned so many lessons from his parents that he would later use in a successful career in sales and business.   The lessons he was taught have been shared with his kids, specifically around helping others, always following the golden rule, and being curious to see how you can make someone's life better.

One of the powerful moments of our conversation was when Bret shared the story and lesson that we, as dads, must be partners, not roommates.  As husbands, he shares that as our marriage grows in time, we must make sure we don't fall into the trap of being roommates.  We are life partners.  Remember that feeling when you first met your wife, and always make her feel special.  Bret also talked about the power of counseling and therapy and that it's OK to ask for help.

Bret later shares why it's so important that, as fathers, we must be open to feedback, and remember, the ego is the enemy!  Lastly, always follow the golden rule of life and give yourself grace.  We are doing our best.

Our next guest found us, and his story was too real and powerful not to have him on our show.  His name is Dr. Robb Kelly, and he is an addiction specialist who was a former alcoholic himself before losing everything.   In this episode, we learn about his relationship with his family and how he first began abusing alcohol.   His story and experience have been highlighted in many media outlets, including NBC, CNN, HBO,  Fox, and ABC.  He is also the author of the book, "Daddy, Daddy, Please stop drinking," which he discusses in this episode.

In today's episode, we are grateful to spend time with Scott MacGregor, who is the CEO of SomethingNew (SomethingNew is an 8-time American Business Award winner for Innovation, which is a record!!! ), the founder of The Outlier Project and 4x author of Standing O!  After a long and successful corporate career, Scott took his talents to entrepreneurship where he continues to excel, and make a huge difference in the world.   

The Outlier Project is a unique membership community for professional development and is for anyone who believes success is found by showing up differently.  They are fond of saying, “Anyone can be ordinary”.  A special focus of The Outlier Project is to develop leaders who believe that companies and individuals alike succeed or fail based on the quality of the teams they build and the relationships they invest in.  Scott and his team call this having a “People Over Everything” mindset.  

Today's conversation is as real as it gets.  It's filled with laughter, wisdom, adversity, resilience, and vulnerability.  Scott grew up with a dad who worked hard, very hard.  He was a gas station owner, and his mom was a stay-at-home mom who looked after them.    Scott learned so much about grit, resilience, and curiosity through his parents.   As a 10-year-old, Scott learned early the power of providing excellent customer service.   Scott and his wife, Meg, have two sons  - Cooper & Tucker.

Where things turned powerful was Scott's story of vulnerability surrounding his son Tucker, who faced challenges in the Marine Corps.   Scott attributes his son's challenges to a lack of building resilience early, where they might've done too much for him.   I hope Scott's personal story will hit home for someone and help them realize you are not alone.

A huge shoutout goes to Leslie Vickrey and Megan McCann for making the introduction to our next guest, Ryan Drummond, the VP of Partnerships at Game Plan.  They are a software and services company that integrates eLearning, mentorship, and career services for competitive athletics organizations. Since 2016, Game Plan has become the most widely used education and development platform for high school, collegiate, and professional athletics departments.   Their software is used by the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.  Additionally, they power the NJCAA opportunity center supporting 500 institutions and 60,000 athletes.  Before joining Game Plan, Ryan's company, The Athlete Book, was acquired by Game Plan.

Ryan was the youngest of three siblings growing up, and competition was everywhere for him!  His father was a professional football player and spent time with the Cowboys and the now, Commanders.  Ryan was a fantastic lacrosse player growing up and would go on to play in college as well.   He and his wife have three kids under the age of 10, which keeps them busy.   Ryan would also share the story of their journey with IVF too, which I thought was very authentic and vulnerable to share.  

One thing his parents taught him that he will teach his kids is the power of #belief and the power of #visualization.    After sports, Ryan shared how he got into mountain biking, where he dropped some wisdom that he learned, "your bike will follow your eyes."  That advice hit home for me, as it's true for many aspects of our life! 

One area of our conversation that hit home as a talking point was around the word #practice.  The ability to instill practice with our kids is so important regardless of what they choose to do in life.  As we finished up, Ryan would remind us all that, as dads, we must practice the art of active listening, lean in on empathy, and don't always react.

Today, we sit down with the talent Patrick Oyeku, the Sr. Vice President of Strategic Accounts at Kforce.  He is responsible for the planning, execution, cultivation, and monitoring of account acquisition and penetration of customers in designated segments.  Additionally, he helps enhance client and consultant relationships to expand the Kforce brand.

Patrick is a St. John's Redstorm alum, a fantastic NY Knicks fan, and a father of three beautiful girls.  He is engaged to the wonderful and talented actress Amirah Vann, who was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series at the 48th NAACP Image Awards in 2017.  

Patrick grew up in Rockaway, NY, and was the youngest of four siblings.  His mom originated from the Caribbean, and his father was from Nigeria.   Sadly, his mom lost her battle with cancer when he was 14, and you will hear how his dad stepped up to be the rock for their family.  Growing up, his parents taught him always to be a man of your word, take care of yourself, and be comfortable being YOU!  

Additionally, being authentic to your character was always a theme in his house. Those are now values he teaches his children—faith and the power of belief are also a massive part of his upbringing.

Today, we sit down with the talented Jonathan Baba, who is a Sr. Vice President for
LMI-  A consultancy dedicated to powering a future-ready, high-performing government, drawing from expertise in digital and analytic solutions, logistics, and management advisory services.   Jonathan is a retired Deloitte partner who spent nearly 19 years in their Defense practice.

However, today's conversation is about Jonathan, the dad.  Today's discussion only happens through the kind introduction by Alex Hein, the Co-Founder & CEO of GridIron IT.  This episode has so much wisdom of life experience for us dads to draw and learn from.  Jonathan is a huge Syracuse fan (hear that, Doug Smith?), a father of three, and happily married to his college sweetheart.  Faith and family are the core foundation that built Jonathan's fantastic family.  His parents were very involved and active in his life, which gave him the vision to provide the same experience for his boys.  

Instilling a work ethic was extremely important in his household, making Sunday dinners a must.  One of the coolest parts of our episode was learning about the individual trips he would take each son on when they were 16. During these trips, he found that his boys would grow and their relationships would be strengthened. They would get outdoors and experience what nature has to offer us.    

Some of the core values that he and his wife drove as non-negotiables were:

• Be Kind, always
• Faith

Jonathan and his wife also did a fantastic job ensuring his boys would always treat women respectfully.  Always.

Today, we sit down with the talented Todd Cetnar, the founder and CEO of Cetnar Consulting Group, who has 25+ years of leading strategic growth with prominent pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Most recently, Todd was the VP of sales at Siemens Medical.

Todd was also a former D1 and professional basketball player who played throughout Europe. His success on the court led him to become a 3x Hall-of-Famer as he was enshrined into his HS, College, and the New York State High Basketball Hall of Fame.
Todd was also a former college basketball coach and now participates on the Ironman Triathlon circuit as an ultra-endurance athlete. 

Todd is the author of the book The 3 Pillars of Elite Results, where Todd has taken all of his experience and combined the skill sets learned in each area of his life to formulating the framework around mastering an elite mindset and leadership skills and building an elite culture.

Today, though, is about Todd, the dad.  We will learn about his wife and their two young daughters.  Todd will share many lessons of adversity that shaped the husband and father he is today.  Throughout his entire life, he has always wanted to be coached.  One of my favorite stories from this episode is when Todd got taught why the "little things" are essential.
