  • S2, Episode 18: The Quotidian - Adam Sobsey

This episode is a special one for me, and longer than usual. I'm speaking with the multidisciplinary writer, Adam Sobsey , author of Bull City Summer, a collaborative documentary project about minor-league baseball, which evolved out Sobsey's nearly five years covering the Durham Bulls for the Independent Weekly, as well as a biography of rock music legend Chrissy Hynde, which Pop Matters called "gloriously comprehensive. . ." and " a noble effort and a satisfying read."

He's written about sports and culture for The Paris Review, for Grantland, for Town & Country. He's won several awards for his playwriting and the grand prize for arts criticism from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies.

What makes this conversation special for me is that Adam was one of my closest childhood friends, and we've stayed in touch since we first met in the late Seventies.

This is a particularly candid episode, as we recorded on Adam's front porch in downtown Durham, which displays itself in the background of our conversation in vivid voice. We spoke about how creativity expresses itself, inherited generational trauma, the innate gifts of creativity vs. the hard won gains of effort and study, and the similarities between writing and drumming.

  • S2, Episode 17: The Quotidian - Kid Beyond
    • WORLD PREMIER SNEAK PEAK!

Acapella hip-hop guru, a baritone with a conscience, and enough funk for anyone's trunk, Kid Beyond represents a unique foray into popular music's over-saturated landscape. A deeply thoughtful artist who is equal parts nutty professor and lyrical magician, Kid uses his immense talent and gracious spirit in service to individuals and communities whose voices need amplification and platforming. And he does it with a scorching brew of bluesy alt-rock and future bass electro. Like the White Stripes meets James Blake, Zepplelin meets Yeezus, it's visceral heart-warrior music for turbulent times, fueled by Kid's soul-shouter pipes, his deep roots as a Buddhist teacher and activist, and his virtuosic band of electro-funk shamans.

    • We spoke about his love of puzzles and involvement in the international puzzle community, how his intellectual and spiritual pursuits combine into a service-oriented creative practice, and his evolving strategy for solving the daily Wordle.

    • Kid also shares with us a sample of his upcoming single, SUFFRAGIST, streaming on all platforms by mid-July, in support of women's reproductive freedom.

  • S2, Episode 14: The Quotidian - Dr. Bryan Brander

Dr. Brian Brander is the head of school of the Hill Center for Learning in Durham, North Carolina, which focuses on developing and nurturing children with diverse learning needs.

I have been particularly inspired and impressed with results I've seen firsthand, both in students I have taught who have attended Hill Center, as well as members of my own family who have thrived as a result of Hill's unique style and singular dedication to the whole child.

Dr Brander received his doctorate of education from North Carolina State University, and holds a degree in social work as well.

We spoke about what makes a good teacher, about creative approaches to teaching and learning, and how many of the societal issues we face today could be alleviated by a more widespread use of even a few of the techniques employed at the hill learning center.

  • The Quotidian: S2; Ep 12 - Greg Hohn

On paper, Greg Hohn is a communications professor at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. But he is much more than that. Greg has been the director of Transactors Improv Company in Chapel Hill, NC since 1996, and has worked in professional theater for nearly forty years. He has taught at Duke University's theater studies department and has led aplied-improv programs for corporations, organizations, and a multitude of other academic institutions.

He has recently released the book, Putting Improv to Work: Spontaneous Performance for Professional and Personal Life. These are subjects near and dear to my personal and professional life, so it was a thrilling opportunity to speak with Greg about his work, about the book, and how defining our own metrics for success are among the most important things we should investigate.
