The Range

In this episode, Ricky has a chat with Vapor Trail Pro-staffer Ashley Covert and her husband Justin. Ashley is an adult onset hunter, introduced under the wing of her husband, and has proven herself as a passionate and successful provider for the family. Justin speaks of the days spent in the woods as a child walking alongside his father. It was there he learned the tricks of the trade that he and Ashley now pass down to their son.

The Covert’s recently spent some time hunting the coveted Buffalo County, WI whitetail. Ashley was the recipient of Gearheads Pro-Staffer of the Year award, earning her family an invitation to the highly sought after opportunity. They break down the highs and lows of the hunt, and the excitement of hunting an area commonly seen on Justin’s favorite hunting shows of the past.

As a family man and avid bowhunter, Ricky identifies the difficulties of ensuring balance. Ashley discusses their family dynamic and the things they do to foster a positive experience for everyone involved.

In this episode, Ricky is on location in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) is 1.1 million acres of pristine Boreal Forest that spreads across the Northeastern tip of Minnesota. The BWCA has over 1000 lakes, more than 1200 miles of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails and over 2000 designated campsites. Hunters and Fisherman alike, seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of the world, to find world class fishing, as well as ruffed grouse, whitetail deer and bear hunting opportunities.

Ricky has frequented the BWCA for much of his adult life, however, his passion for protecting the pristine wilderness, has prompted an increase in time spent. On a recent solo canoe trip, shortly after a severe thunderstorm rolled through, Ricky discusses his day to day activities. Among them were the repair of a canoe seat, the making of a cup, and using primitive techniques to light fire and build shelters. Ricky also details the experiences he is having, both physically and mentally.

The BWCA is under threat by from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining at its headwaters. For more information and to find you how you can help, visit @sportsmenbwca .

In this episode, Ricky and Hollywood have a chat with Sam Soholt of Public Land Tees and the main topic of conversation is Conservation.

Sam and his brother Josh have dedicated much of their lives to conserving wildlife, as well as preserving the tradition of the hunt. Instead of reinventing the wheel, they started a campaign to raise conservation funds known as “Stamp It Forward”. The campaign has contributed to the purchase of thousands of Federal Duck Stamps, infusing tens of thousands of dollars into Wetland Conservation. Of those dollars, 98% by law, must be used for Wetland Conservation.

As Sam mentions, “What’s good for the bird, is good for the herd”. Wetland conservation provides habitat for over 700 different species of animals, including small and big game. This year, they have stepped it up a notch with the 100 Mile Duck Ruck. Sam will hike 100 miles, through the Prairie Pothole region, in an attempt to earn the funds pledged for the campaign. Sam is swinging for the fences to raise $100,000! Head over to publiclandtees.com/duckruck to participate. Link will also be in our bio.

Ricky and Ben go back to 2005, when they first met. Both worked for Sportsman’s Warehouse and Ben took Ricky under his wing, teaching him the ways of the stick and string. Stories of their hunts in the western plains bring back many memories, as well as remind them of the importance of capturing them with quality  photography.

With the emergence of social media, Ben explains why he began to distance himself from being in the spotlight. Ricky prompts him to tell the amazing story of his Elk hunt last year with his kids, that Ben proclaims will most likely be impossible to beat.

Dr. Bradley Johnson and his three friends embark on an annual adventure into the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. The signs at the trailhead caution folks to “Be Bear Aware”, yet in the past, Brad and his cohorts have had only one encounter with a Black Bear. Despite the low odds of an attack, they arm themselves with bear spray.

During the final stretch of the 8 mile hike to their chosen camp site, Brad is anxious to get there and pushes forward, separating him from the rest of the crew. As he begins to crest the final summit, he spots not one, but two Grizzly Bears no more than 30 yards away. Before Brad can formulate a plan to distance himself, he can quickly see they are both in a full charge. As he scrambles to remove the safety of the bear spray, a lesson learned from childhood prompts him to make his next move. A move that very well played a role in saving his life.

As the rest of the story unfolds, it can only be explained as a series of miracles. Brad gives credit to the strength and wisdom that GOD gave to all of those involved in ensuring his survival. This gripping story will have you on the edge of your seat.
