HRTech - Serge and Shelley are going!  

The update on what our millennial is encountering in her job search; empty promises and crickets. Getting that first job is tough, willing to work but no experience. The struggle is real.

Recruitment Insights

• Shopify, the Canadian tech darling is reducing their workforce and you guessed it - recruiting is hit along with customer support and sales. They are putting a big blanket around their product building teams - no surprises there.

• The biggest bust of illegal workers in Canada, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts take the walk of shame, hiding behind their statement of ‘we did our due diligence’. It's unlikely they got 3 bids on that contract. Can anyone find a trace of the temp agency One Team? They vanished faster than water in the desert. 

• The blame game continues, employers complaining,  “no one wants to work anymore”, trace that statement back to 1894!

• The research confirms it, out of 1,000 hiring managers, ⅔  admit they are failing to fill their vacant positions because they are forced to only hire candidates with a degree. Some sectors like tech and healthcare are rethinking it - certifications might be as relevant as degrees for entry level jobs. 

The only thing better than being at RecFest, which was a mind blowing experience, would be if Serge could have been there with Shelley. 

Meeting all the global influencers in TA and those who supported TRF’s from day one was certainly a hilite. 

AND Hung Lee needs a better photographer - his picture does not do him justice, he’s much better looking in person.

We are feeling the effects of the madness in the tourism industry. Flight cancellations and the other alternative is 30+ hours to get home put a damper on Serge’s plans. He will be home alone, as the girls go on vacation, Serge will be a lonely dad or maybe the party is at Serge’s place?

• Demand for travel smacked down the major airports who are reliant on humans to unload planes and check in passengers. Even with time prepare, it appears airlines failed to get their house in order to meet demand, yet the price triples to fly?

• Staggering turnover numbers will bring Amazon’s distribution centres in major US centre to a stand still. TA saw this coming, recruiting warehouse workers with no human intervention then treating them poorly, you will eventually run out of people to hire. 

• Taking employer brand to new levels the CEO of the bitcoin exchange, Kraken publicly announces he is the devil you know. Candidates will vote with their feet on this company. 

• Appcast releases their spring update. Slide 5 is proof that your register to apply process is repelling 96% of people who want to apply.

Recruitment Insights:

• Blowing the lid off the arguments against pay transparency in your job ads. The top 4 excuses for not posting pay rates are crap. There’s really only one reason. 

• Microsoft is leading the way with their commitment to publish what they pay, do away with non-competes and voluntarily submit to a civil right audit. Brave move.

• TikTok for jobs is a total fail if you don't understand the audience. Great for recruitment marketing but impossible to master the algorithm.

• Starbucks CEO is stuck in the 70’s thinking that employees will see his great sacrifice of working a 12 hour day and follow his commands to come back to the office. He’s obviously having coffee with Elon Musk!
