Jim Blanchard joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Jim Blanchard is the former CEO and chair of Synovus Corporation and current chair of JBA Capital. Blanchard has left his distinct mark on the state of Georgia as a business and civic leader, but a true leader, he says, measures his effectiveness not by the number of people he’s made to do his bidding but by whether those people feel supported, empowered, and appreciated. That concept of servant leadership that has guided him in his life and career is applicable to people in all industries and all walks of life, he says, as it brings us closer to the model of the original servant leader—Jesus Christ himself. “In the gospels, Jesus is quoted as saying, ‘I came to serve, not be served,’ ” Blanchard says. “We have seen what self-serving leaders do and the chaos that they can produce, and we have a desperate need for a change in the leadership model toward the kind of servant leadership that was modeled by Jesus during His lifetime and His ministry.”

Dr. Gregory Jones joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Dr. Gregory Jones is the dean of the Duke University Divinity School. Dr. Jones will introduce the concept of “holy friends”—people perceptive and compassionate enough to see through the fictions we’ve constructed around ourselves and help us reach the truth in ways that can change our lives. Rev. Michael John Cusick joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Rev. Michael J. Cusick is a licensed therapist and founder of the ministry Restoring the Soul. In his thought-provoking presentation “God, Sex, and the Soul,” he will draw upon his experiences as a minister, a therapist, and someone who has struggled with addiction and infidelity issues himself to show how men can open up about sex and relationship issues without shame. If nothing else, he says, it’s important to remember that Jesus never shamed anyone, not even adulterers or prostitutes. “That makes our hearts free to say, ‘OK, I don’t want to have an affair, because that would take me out of this connection with real love,’” he says. “It would be like being on life support and taking the plug out of the wall—it’s not a punishment from God, it’s a consequence of being disconnected from Him.”

Bart Hansen joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Bart Hansen is a founding board member of the men’s ministry Wild at Heart. In teaching men how to reclaim masculinity from emasculation, false machismo, and “poserism,” Hansen says one of the best things they can do is examine the life of Jesus Himself—a man who was fierce and unapologetic in his opposition to selfishness and hypocrisy, but who was motivated by compassion and a sincere love for His fellow man. “G.K. Chesterton said that the fierceness of a warrior is determined not by the enemy in front of him that he hates, but by what he loves that he is fighting for,” Hansen explains. “And that really does describe the heart of Jesus. The greatest motive we can live for is love, and that’s what Jesus did.”

Shane will be speaking about men’s need for validation from certain important figures in their lives and the wrong turns they often take when they don’t receive it—along with how we can better know ourselves and each other through self-reflection and Christ’s love. “Until people really love themselves and become comfortable with who they are, they’re always going to be ‘posing’ or presenting to others what they think will be the most lovable. We live in a society that runs off this projection of what we think others want us to be,” he says. “I hope that people come away from this with a sense that it’s OK if there are things about them that are broken or in need of being whole.”

Jeff Struecker is a founding pastor of 2 Cities Church in Columbus, Georgia. Jeff talks about rediscovering  our true worth in the context of God’s original purpose for our existence—not an easy thing to do in a world in which we’re constantly told our purpose is acquiring wealth and influence. Refocusing our lives on that purpose, he says, is essential to fixing what’s broken inside us. “Our beauty and value and self-worth have all been terribly distorted, and it was us that distorted it."
