Yeah, just ain't no peace with old Jesse around. You oughta pity my poor wife. In this episode, Patrick has chosen Andrew Dominik’s stately 2007 turn of the century outlaw death march The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

An increasingly paranoid, deeply traumatised Jesse James (Brad Pitt), by now already one of the most famous men in America after a string of daring train and bank robberies, finds himself at the head of a rapidly crumbling gang of misfits. Among the last of his acolytes is the callow new recruit Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), a 19 year old who believes he could do great things alongside the man whose antics he obsessively catalogues from nickel fiction and newspaper clippings. Their attraction and repulsion simmers towards an inevitable conclusion telegraphed right in the title, while the viewer is left to untangle the snake knot of motivations of the doomed pair.

Released in a banner year for modern cinema, the film struggled to find the audience that some of its more garlanded, vaguely Western-adjacent peers like No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood garnered. Patrick, Devlin and Gali recall their trip to the cinema together almost 15 years ago, and how their relationship with the film has changed, while first-time viewer Matt weighs in with a fresh perspective. Is this an underrepresented gem unfairly overlooked? Or an overcooked stew of underwhelming miserablism?

Final report, the commercial starship Nostromo. We return to our LV-RMP series to talk about the seminal sci-fi horror that started it all: Ridley Scott’s imperious 1979 original ALIEN.

Our first episode focussed on James Cameron’s 1986 sequel, which was for (almost) all of the panel our first contact with the xenomorph. Now, Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt step in to the laser egg room for the origins of the series, as we meet jaded space truckers Captain Dallas (Tom Skerrit), 3rd Officer Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Science Officer Ash (Ian Holm), Navigator Lambert (Veronica Cartwright), Executive Officer Kane (John Hurt), and technicians Parker (Yaphet Kotto) and Brett (Harry Dean Stanton) aboard an earthbound mining ship. Diverted by what seems to be a distress beacon, they allow into their house one of the single most terrifying and iconic monsters in cinema history, unleashing a horror that continues to resonate some 4 decades later.

We discuss the alchemy behind the film’s creation, to try to unpack how this disparate collection of humans created such a perfect organism, and talk about what the film has meant to us over the years, and how it inspired not just a 40-plus year series but an entire galaxy of imitators and descendents.

She’s a predator. Her eyes are in front. In this episode, we’ve awarded director Roger Donaldson his 2nd dip in the Bargain Bin with the lascivious 1995 sci-fi horror thriller SPECIES.

When indeterminate Government science guy Xavier Fitch (a slumming Ben Kinglsey) decides to follow an intergalactic recipe for alien DNA, he may have inadvertently sown the seeds of the destruction of mankind, as his creation blossoms in to the statuesque Sil, played by newcomer Natasha Henstridge. She’s on the prowl for a mate, scouring Los Angeles for fellas to fornicate with so she can propagate her...species, potentially replacing us as the apex predators on Earth. In response, Fitch collects a ragtag group led by lethargic freelance hired gun Press (Michael Madsen) to hunt her down before she can get down. 

Bone trains, biomechanical boobs and bewildering acting choices ensue as Gali, Devlin and Matt look back at a bona fide box office hit whose charms may have been obvious to ‘90s teen boys, but do they endure today?

What do you say we cut the CHIT-CHAT, A-HOLE?! Or not, as the case may be, as the gang gets together for a listener request episode and discusses Michael Bay’s incendiary Simpson/Bruckheimer action landmark THE ROCK.

Chemical superfreak FBI expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage, kicking off his unlikely but lucrative action star run) is drafted in to advise when disgruntled former Black Ops specialist General Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) swipes a pile of experimental rockets and takes control of Alcatraz Prison, threatening to vaporise San Francisco if his ransom demands for restitution for his fallen comrades isn’t met. Enter the only man to successfully break out of the infamous institution - British spy John Mason (Sean Connery), whose unique knowledge of the layout leads Goodspeed and a crew of special forces in for a rescue mission that results in much patented Bayhem.

With thanks to listener Louis Naum, Gali, Devlin, Patrick & Matt head to the slammer to discuss the halcyon days of the mid-90s actioner, where brash and brawny bros crafted unapologetically brain-bypassing spectacles. But has the film aged like a fine vintage Connery, or is this missile a dud?

“That's murder, kid.” We’re wallowing in the seamy, seedy and sleazy side of cinema with a new RErotica series. Following our delve into the Sharon Stone classic Basic Instinct, we’re back with another foray into a...formative film experience for several of our panel - John McNaughton’s nefarious, naughty 1998 neo-noir Wild Things. 

Popular high school guidance counsellor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is accused of sexual assault by two students - imperiously wealthy society princess Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) and twitchy trailer park denizen Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell). A dizzying array of double-crosses and betrayals follows as loose cannon cop Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) ignores his superiors’ instructions and pursues the seemingly closed case.

An infamous late-night TV classic of the 90s, our ostensibly more mature gang look to see if there’s more to enjoy beyond its more infamous scenes. You know the ones. Join Gali, Devlin, Patrick & Matt as they take a trip to wealthy Blue Bay for a head-rush cocktail of teen trash, black comedy and twisty thriller.

Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me? Today’s choice comes courtesy of Matt, who has picked Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Vietnam nightmare Full Metal Jacket. 

Smart-mouthed recruit Pvt. Joker (Matthew Modine), as he’s quickly named by his ruthless new drill instructor (R. Lee Ermey), arrives with his fellow recruits at Parris Island for a hellacious training session. The main target of the instructor’s ire, the clumsy and ill-prepared Pvt. Pyle (Vincent D’Onofrio), puts a brutal full stop on this section, before we are whisked off to the frontline with Joker, now a correspondent with a military magazine. Bullets and bodies ensue.

Joining Pvt. Ridley in the trenches, Gali, Devlin and Patrick discuss the tremendous task of transforming an East London gas works into a theatre of war, the unusual bipartite structure of the film, and Kubrick’s famously exacting directorial style.

Mind if I do a J? We’re drifting along with a tumbling tumbleweed to the City of Angels for an encounter with The Dude in the Coen Brothers’ shambling stoner noir comedy classic The Big Lebowski.

The Dude, AKA Jeffrey Lebowski, finds his simple life of bowling, dairy-based cocktails and copious weed intake upended by a case of mistaken identity rug-peeing. Seeking restitution from his ornery millionaire namesake, The Dude is thrown into a kidnapping plot involving nihilist techno bands, strongly vaginal performance artists, stonewalling teenagers, suave pornographers and fascist Police chiefs. Aided/hindered by his hair-trigger Vietnam vet buddy Walter, severed toes and weaponised marmots ensue, with iconic performances from Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and more. 

First time Rewinder and fellow film school buddy Joe introduces us to a film that is among the most influential and beloved from his formative years. Alongside Gali, Devlin and Matt, the gang chat about a once-ambivalently received oddity that flourished into a full-blown religion. Way to go Donnie!

We’re travelling back to the fading embers of the Hollywood Golden Age with John Huston’s 1961 elegiac lament The Misfits, written by legendary playwright Arthur Miller for his then-wife Marilyn Monroe, who stars alongside “The King of Hollywood” Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter.

Monroe stars as Roslyn, a recent divorcee who finds herself unmoored in Reno, Nevada and drifting in to the orbit of aging cowboy charmer Gay (Gable) and temperamental mechanic/pilot Guido (Wallach). The triangle becomes an unsteady rhombus when they pick up punch-drunk rodeo rider Perce (Clift), and head out into the wilderness outside of the city to hunt for mustang. A monochrome, melancholy mood piece, it was a financial flop on its release, and several of its stars and creative team held the film in disregard, while others considered it among their best work.

A film marked by tragedy, this features the final completed performances of both Monroe and Gable, who sadly died only days after filming concluded, and also marked one of Clift’s final films. Dissolving marriages, dependencies on drugs and alcohol, and fractious tempers marked a tortuous shoot, but one that resulted in a film that this episode’s film picker Devlin holds a great deal of affection for. Will first-time viewers Gali and Matt, and 2nd time viewer Patrick, share his enthusiasm, or will it all be too sad to bear?

FOR FREEEEEEEEE?!?! Merry Christmas listeners, have we got a lump of coal for you! Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt have each picked a festive favourite, and our choices lent themselves to compiling two separate episodes where each we discuss why these films are our perennial, go-to holiday films.

We begin the Nice List with Patrick introducing the Salkind-produced British-American coproduction SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE, starring David Huddleston as the man himself, who ascends from a beloved toymaker in 14th Century Germany to the immortal, jolly symbol of Christmas cheer. However, ambitious elf Patch (Dudley Moore) unknowingly threatens to derail everything when he gets wrapped up with ruthless toy company executive B.Z. (a full ham John Lithgow) and his madcap plans for CHRISTMAS 2!

Gali follows this up with Richard Curtis’ seminal multi-strand rom-com LOVE ACTUALLY. A murderer’s row of (mostly) British thesps swear, bumble, emote and quip their way through stories that range from a grieving stepdad comforting his stepson via drums and Titanic, to a sassy Prime Minister who has the hots for the tea lady, via a long-shot comeback by an addled old rock star among many others.
