Charles Dickens would have wanted to see her nipples! Merry Christmas listeners, have we got a lump of coal for you! Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt have each picked a festive favourite, and our choices lent themselves to compiling two separate episodes where we each discuss why these films are our perennial, go-to holiday films.

On the Naughty List, we start with Matt’s choice of GREMLINS, Joe Dante’s uproarious, puppet-mayhem-fuelled dismantling of the classic American soft-hearted, smalltown, feelgood, Christmas tale. When Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) receives an adorable little furball called Gizmo for Christmas, the list of seemingly simple rules he has to follow inevitably lead to carnage when little green fellas start destroying the not-so-picture-perfect town of Kingston Falls.

We follow up with Devlin’s choice: Richard Donner’s livewire, cynical, yuppie-era Dickens subversion SCROOGED, starring a noticeably madcap Bill Murray as TV network president Frank Cross spending a night being tormented by some very zany ghosts in an effort to mend his wicked ways - such as celebrating the death of an old lady who he has scared to death with his murder-and-acid-rain-fuelled programme advertising, and threatening to staple antlers to a mouse’s head.

How does it feel to be hunted? Well, greasy mulletted ‘Cajun’ Chance Boudreaux (Jean Claude Van Damme) is about to find out, as he finds himself embroiled in some big game down by the bayou in John Woo’s Hollywood debut Hard Target. 

Rolling into town in search of her daddy, Natasha (Yancy Butler, in her first feature) recruits Chance to assist after an, erm, chance meeting in which he rescues her from a mugging with some extremely well-placed slo-mo face kicks. Unfortunately, her dad has already fallen prey to the ruthless Emil Fouchon (Lance Henriksen), who, along with his cold-blooded sidekick Van Cleef (Arnold Vosloo), facilitate the hunting of homeless military veterans on the streets of New Orleans by extremely rich patrons who are seeking a very exclusive thrill. Fouchon soon turns his crosshairs on to the troublesome Chance, as arrows, bullets, and an outrageous amount of doves and pigeons fly.

Join Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt as they rummage in the Bargain Bin to dig out Woo’s truly explosive calling card, blazing a trail from Hong Kong on the back of his incendiary balletic action films to not only establish himself in the big leagues, but also open the door to other filmmakers from the region, while cementing a visual style that quickly became a genre standard.

VAYA CON DIOS! We’re turning a petrol pump flamethrower on to this chilly winter weather and heading to sunny L.A., where the air got dirty and the sex got clean, for a blast of surfing, skydiving, and stealing with Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action classic Point Break. 

Quarterback punk and Quantico blue-flamer Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) arrives in town and is assigned his new partner, grizzled/insane FBI vet Pappas (Gary Busey), who has an interesting theory about the string of summer bank heists committed by a gang of guys calling themselves the Ex-Presidents, rubber mask-clad and disguised as Reagan, Nixon, Carter & Johnson. His hunch - that the gang are sssssssurfers - leads Utah to go undercover with a board like a ‘57 Chevy and try to enlist sassy Tyler (Lori Petty) to teach him to surf, before his head is noticeably turned by the enigmatic waverider Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). The two men form a fascinating, subversive bond even as one unwittingly pursues the other, leading to some remarkably heated chases and no small amount of shooting guns off and going ‘aaargh’.

Join film picker Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt as they head out in search of the ultimate. You want this episode so bad, you can taste it like acid in your mouth.

Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman… We’re back with our final installment in this HalloRe’ewind series of seasonal recommendations and our last pick comes from Patrick, who has chosen the 1992 classic Candyman. Oh no, that’s five!

In the notorious project of Cabrini-Green, in the neglected housing blocks that sit in the shadow of the wealthiest districts of Chicago yet remain riddled with crime and gang activity, a gory folk tale has the residents of those towers under its spell: the hook-handed spirit of a brutally murdered man from a century before. University grad student Helen braves the dangerous turf in pursuit of the truth behind the tale, convinced that it’s merely a superstitious avatar for the everyday horrors the local population face. But is she inviting disaster by refusing to believe?

Joining Patrick are Gali, Devlin and Matt as they discuss the curiously British origins of this very American horror, the tenor of the era that lent it an urgent timeliness, and the power of myths that saw a whole generation of kids daring each other to say his name in the mirror.

CHEESEBURGER. The 3rd in our HalloRe’ewind series, where each host chooses their seasonal favourite, sees Gali emerging from his telepod as something transformed - Galifly. We’re talking about David Cronenberg’s classic sci-fi body horror The Fly from 1986.

Brilliant scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) charms journalist Veronica Quaife (his then-real-life partner Geena Davis) into visiting his warehouse laboratory-come-apartment with the promise of showing her an invention which will change the course of history. Suitably amazed by a demonstration of his revolutionary device for transporting matter, he convinces her to hold off on publishing her findings until he has achieved his ultimate task - human teleportation. They grow closer, but a mixture of hubris and human fallibility leads to a terrifying, slow-burning nightmare of his own doing.

We relive this classic in all its grotesque glory, discussing the pioneering practical effects, memorable score, and affecting performances as Gali, Devlin, Matt and Patrick continue through our Halloween season of tricks and treats.

FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP! Our second selection in the HalloRe’ewind series comes courtesy of Devlin, who has delved back into his sulky late-teen years to choose the seminal goth-lite tragic romantic 1994 comic book revenge actioner The Crow.

Striking rock vocalist Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his beautiful fiancée Shelley are viciously attacked on Hallowe’en eve, or Devil’s Night, by a gang of thugs who throw Eric to his death from their apartment’s ornate rose window. One year later, Eric rises from his grave to avenge his beloved Shelley, who succumbed later to her injuries, by killing each gang member responsible. Guided by a mysterious crow and now impervious to injury, his face painted to resemble a ghoulish white mask, he stalks the streets of Detroit on a path of righteous destruction that leads him to the sinister gangland boss Top Dollar (Michael Wincott).

We relive the dark and gloomy nineties angst, revel in the industrial/grunge soundtrack, marvel at the weird career of director Alex Proyas, mourn the passing of the film’s rising star Brandon Lee, and mock Devlin for his formative small town miserabilism. Outlaw brothers Seth (an early breakout role for E.R. heartthrob George Clooney) and Richie (screenwriter and at-the-time ascendant indie movie vanguard Quentin Tarantino) Gecko are on their way to a safe haven south of the border after a daring prison break has left a trail of destruction in their wake. They’re forced to hitch a ride at gunpoint with fallen preacher Jacob (Harvey Keitel) and his teenage kids Kate and Scott, piloting their RV to an all-night biker hellhole called The Titty Twister to await the Geckos’ liaison. Little do they know that their troubles are just beginning, as they are confronted with something far worse than the scummy denizens of whip-cracking bikers toting firearm codpieces and carnival barking, erm, cat enthusiasts.

In this episode, we tackle the incendiary and controversial 1992 Australian movie Romper Stomper, featuring a star-making turn from Russell Crowe as the head of a gang of violent neo-Nazis in rundown suburban Melbourne. 

Hando (Crowe) leads his group of violent young men in a brutal assault on three young members of the city’s Vietnamese Australian community. Later, Hando and his shy, but equally violent, 2nd in command Davey (the late Daniel Pollock in his final role) notice a new girl in their local pub - the traumatised, epileptic, and very impressionable Gabrielle (Jaqueline McKenzie). When riotous retribution for their earlier attack comes their way, the gang’s ruinous ethos starts to unravel their unity, stripping them down to this core trio for an intense finale.

Uniquely, this is the whole panel’s first viewing of this film - picker Patrick having only heard tell of the mark it left on his dad in his younger days. Joining Gali, Devlin and Matt, we discuss the legacy of a film that split the critical community on release, reflect on how the film now impacts new viewers almost three decades removed from its debut, and the choices of then-32-year-old tyro director Geoffrey Wright in his handling of the material.

GET THE MEAT. On this episode, Gali, Devlin and Patrick are joined all the way from Vancouver by fellow former film school buddy Aidan, who takes a break from his busy schedule as a focus puller & camera department pro to introduce us to the 1992 Sci-Fi curio Freejack, which for some reason was staple viewing in his formative years.

Formula 1 racer and gopher-faced cheeky chap Alex Furlong (Emilio Estevez) wakes up on race day with his fiancee Julie (Rene Russo), unaware that not only does a terrible fiery car accident await him, but so does a bizarre temporal displacement kidnapping/pre-grave robbing of his soon-to-be incinerated body in the second before impact by behelmeted Bonejacker Vacendak (the actual Mick Jagger). Suddenly slung almost 20 years in to the future, Alex awakes in a sketchily drawn sub-Philip K Dick society where the infirm and very wealthy can pluck the nearly-deceased out of their timeline via scientific shenanigans and inhabit their lobotomised bodies in order to bypass age and illness. Now Alex, on the run from his own inhibition as the titular Freejack, tries to: maintain control of his own anatomy; reunite with latter-day corporate go-getter Julie; avoid the attentions of the tank-driving weirdo Vacendak; and uncover the labyrinthine corporate plot of who arranged his jacking that also embroils slimy exec Michelette (Jonathan Banks) and sonorous head honcho McCandless (a clearly contractually-obligated Anthony Hopkins). 

Confused? You will be! First-time viewers Patrick, Devlin and Gali delve in to see why such a deluge of ideas so enraptured a pre-teen Aidan back in his Northumbrian childhood, latching on to such fleeting pleasures as an eccentric turns by lovable 90s weirdo Amanda Plummer and former New York Doll David Johansen, the name Grand L. Bush, and a veritable checklist of corny dystopian tropes under the direction of Rewind alumnus Geoff Murphy (Under Siege 2: Dark Territory).
