GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER! We’re touching down on LV-426 in James Cameron’s incendiary 1986 sequel ALIENS. We’ll be revisiting the whole Alien franchise in true, confusing Rewind fashion not in release order, but in the order we watched them as kids.

Thawed out of cryostasis almost 60 years after her first terrifying ordeal with the Xenomorphs, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is badgered by a sleazy executive from the shady Weyland-Yutani Corporation in to acting as an ‘advisor’ on a mission to investigate the far-flung terraforming colony Hadley’s Hope, situated on the same planet that Ripley barely managed to escape from, with which the company has lost contact. Gearing up alongside the rugged Colonial Marines, which includes badass Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein), wild card Hudson (Bill Paxton), and ice cool Hicks (Michael Biehn), Ripley’s worst fears are confirmed when familiar, nightmare fuel creatures wipe out most of the team almost immediately.

As Ripley finds herself responsible for the sole survivor of the colony, a small girl called Newt, she must rely on only her wits and courage to survive and escape. Join Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt as they travel back in time to one of the seminal movies of most of our panel’s youths, a movie that detonated a popular sci-fi horror film into a multi-armed media franchise and arguably created an entire subgenre of imitators. Welcome DISGUSTING MAMMALS to a very special Rewind Movie Podcast! On this episode we are delighted to be joined by the effervescent Em from the excellent Verbal Diorama podcast, who has rewarded our hospitality by bringing us the...fondly remembered 1993 video game adaptation SUPER MARIO BROS.

Grumbling Britalian-American plumber Mario Mario (a visibly confused Bob Hoskins) and his Colombian/Calabrian brother Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo) follow sparky young archaeologist Daisy (Samantha Mathis) through a portal to an alternative dimension where dinosaurs, not simians, were the evolutionary forebears of the humanoid denizens of the cyberpunk trashland known as Dinohattan. Its leader is the slithery and ruthless King Koopa (crazy Dennis Hopper), who intends to use Daisy and her mysterious necklace to take over and rule our world.

We delve into the bizarre origins of the film, the on-set fights over tone and content, and how that affected the final movie, as the directors’ dystopian designs clash with the family-friendly script commissioned while production was already in progress. With all this ground to cover, luckily we have our tremendous guest to keep us on track. Join Gali, Devlin and Em down one of those green tunnel-looking things as we take a deep dive on one of 90s cinema’s most famous flops. Will we unearth a rare and beautiful truffle from under the dirt, or does this mushroom deserve to be flambéed?

If anybody smiles at me ever again, I'm going to freak out. On this Throwback episode, Devlin has chosen David Gordon Green’s 2003 melancholy indie romance All The Real Girls.

We meet small town lothario Paul (Paul Schneider) after he has already become enraptured by his best friend’s younger sister Noel (Zooey Deschanel), and begun a tentative romance that doesn’t sit well with drinking buddy and fellow carouser Tip (Shea Wigham) who knows all too well what his worst impulses can lead to. Before he hit the big time with his Blumhouse Halloween franchise, we return to David Gordon Green’s roots with his second feature, and discuss his idiosyncratic career trajectory. 

Set amongst the natural splendour and post-industrial decline of North Carolina, where Green & Schneider studied film along with co-star Danny McBride, this naturalistic, meditative film was a seminal discovery for Devlin back when he was on the brink of adulthood - does it still hold the same sway now? And will it cast any kind of spell on Gali, Patrick & Matt, who he hassled relentlessly to watch it all those years ago?

Phoenix is awoken by some nefarious hand in a now totally pacifistic, utopian 2032, free to MurderDeathKill as many innocents as he sees fit, before the decision is made to defrost the caveman Spartan to renew their hostilities and hunt him down.

Three wishes I'll grant ye, great wishes or small! But you wish a fourth and you'll lose them all! Patrick has thrown us waaaaaay back for this episode, asking Gali and Devlin to accompany him to meet Darby O’Gill and the Little People, a 1959 Disney live action movie which features one of the first performances by a very young Sean Connery. 

Smalltown tale-teller Darby O’Gill (Irish stage legend Albert Sharpe) spends his days avoiding his groundskeeper duties by spinning pub yarns of his pursuit of the local Leprechauns and specifically their leader, King Brian Connors (comedian Jimmy O’Dea). Tricked out of his crock of gold, Darby vows to get one over on the wily King Brian when his master hires a younger man to take over his duties, to ensure that his daughter Katie (Janet Munro) can retain her homestead.

We look at the odd inception of this project, as Walt Disney himself sunk almost a decade and a half into its development hoping to strike it rich among the Irish diaspora of the US. We also talk impressive sets, excessive stereotypes, and Patrick’s mischievous devotion to making Devlin sit through musical numbers.

Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) in a sprawling investigation that takes in murder, prostitution, and political scandal, where allegiances, ambition, power and morality come in to question.
