Anya's mantra is 'who cares what Aunty thinks, live your life!' As an immigrant from Trinidad, Anya understands the pressure immigrants feel from their community, the people in their new homes, and even from themselves to build a life that's impressive to others, even though it may be extremely stifling to them.
What a wholesome and honest conversation we had. We talked about so much, from being a first-generation immigrant to paying off debt aggressively, to standing up to societal expectations and building community. We talked about:
- Moving to Boston from Trinidad as a teenager
- Graduating with $36,000 in student loans and moving across the country to San Francisco
- Being the only or one of the only Black women in Tech roles
- How the financial knowledge from her family did not apply to her life in the USA
- How not having a support system impacted her finances
- Building community after relocating to a new city and budgeting for it
- Getting laid off and leaving the USA temporarily
- Finally making a plan to pay off her debt
- How going home helped her financially, emotionally, and mentally
- What's different about her now
- Why she's building Navigating Culture
With Navigating Culture, and the Navigating Culture podcast, Anya is empowering immigrants and even people from immigrant families to live by the mantra, Who Cares What Aunty Thinks, Live Your Life. Essentially, she is creating a community of immigrants who are Redefining Outdated Ideas Of Success & Living Joyfully On Their Own Terms, Even If Aunty Disapproves.
If this resonates with you, she welcomes you to join her.
