This statement can seem a little obvious “you don’t know what you don’t know,” but many people don’t ever consider this when starting something new. Coming to terms with this statement has helped me a lot. I’ve become more vulnerable because of it, I’ve had more motivation to try new things because of it, and finally, I’ve been more comfortable with failure because of it.
I want it to be clear that no one expects you to know everything on your first day on the job. There’s always going to be something new that you have to struggle with for a while before you master it.
Being vulnerable and open to learning new things will help you transform in every aspect of your life. You’re always going to have things that you don’t know. Don’t shy away from that and be scared of it. Use it to motivate and reassure yourself that when you encounter something difficult, it’s just part of the process. Let’s say you just started snowboarding, and you suck. Well, the majority of people are going to suck when they first start. Don’t let that discourage you, just think that there are things you don’t know, and over time you’ll learn these things and become better and better.
You don’t know what you don’t know, and the best way to learn what you don’t know is to expose yourself to it. It’s reported that Thomas Edison failed at making the lightbulb 1,000 times. He didn’t know how to make the lightbulb, but he kept trying, and he’s quoted saying, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” That’s the kind of mindset you must have! Cause you’ll encounter things you don’t know, and you’ll fall on your face and make mistakes, but that’s all part of that process of becoming great.
Learn to love the process of not knowing and being vulnerable because that love will guide you to newer and better things along your journey.
