In the upper room, Philip asks Jesus to “show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” In response, Jesus asks a profound question, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been with you for such a long time?” The truth is we can know all about Jesus, but not really accept his message. The cure is accepting that there is justice in this world and that without Jesus as our advocate, we have a losing case.

When Job is asked this question, God is reminding him that he is a mortal man with limited capacities and God is not. What follows is a detailed explanation of the breath of God’s wisdom. As with Job, while we’re not able to fully explain the ways of God, we do know that despite our circumstances, we can confidently entrust ourselves to His sovereignty.

God asks the prophet Elijah this question when He finds him running and hiding out from evil Queen Jezebel. Elijah was battling discouragement, fear and doubt and ready to give up. But, God has a crucial question for him and for us when we find ourselves in similar circumstances. God asks, “What are you doing here?” The good news is that if we’re willing to course correct, God wants to minister to us and to reveal Himself in fresh ways.

When God gives us an assignment, we’re never fully qualified or apt to take it on. That’s the whole point: to rely on God’s grace to amplify our own ability. God asks this question —“Who made your mouth?”— in response to Moses’ feelings of inadequacies in leading the people of Israel out of Egypt. Through this question, God says I’m greater than your inadequacies. He says the same to us.
