Tamar of Georgia was a queen of Georgia, known for her successful military campaigns against neighboring countries and her promotion of Georgia as a major power in the region. She is considered one of the greatest rulers in Georgia's history and is often referred to as "Tamar the Great" & “King of Kings.”

Princess Takamatsu was part of the Japanese imperial family and the younger sister of Emperor Hirohito.  She is known for her philanthropic work, and she was particularly impactful in supporting education, cultural exchange, & scientific research

Janet Guthrie was the first women to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, and she was the first woman to qualify for a NASCAR Cup Series race.  After studying physics & aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan, she began her racing career in the 1960s.  She was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Catharina van Hemessen was a Flemish Renaissance painter who was active in the 16th century. One of the first female artists to achieve recognition in the Low Countries, Catharina is known for her portraits and religious paintings.

The Night Witches were a group of all-women fighter pilots in WWII who bombed Nazi forces under the cover of darkness.

In fact, they were such a pain in the ass to Nazi forces, that any German airman who brought one down automatically qualified for the Iron Cross medal.  

Despite the overt misogyny these women pilots faced, The Night Witches were THE MOST HIGHLY DECORATED UNIT IN THE SOVIET AIR FORCE.  

Not saying they ended World War II, but we’re not NOT saying they ended World War II.

To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Public Law 773, we’re talking all about the SPARS & Women in the Coast Guard!

Public Law 773 was signed into law by FDR on Nov. 23, 1942.  This created the USCG Women’s Reserve, bringing women in as actual members of the military.

They served in a variety of roles & continue to serve in all roles within the US Coast Guard, including the newly appointed COMMANDANT (aka HBIC)!

Henrietta Lacks was a 31 year old mother who died of cervical cancer.  During her cancer diagnosis & treatment, physicians took samples of her cancer cells without her knowledge & without her consent.  These cells did the unthinkable: they never died.  They were immortal.  

These cells went on to become the HeLa cell line, which is a commonly used cell line in biomedical research even to this day.  Henrietta’s cells have been used to develop the polio vaccine, cancer & AIDS treatments, mapping the human genome, & so much more.  

And her family didn’t know about any of this until 20 years later.  What has unfolded since then has revealed a horrifying exploitation of a Black woman & her family, lack of informed consent, & systemic profiteering that are JUST NOW starting to be addressed appropriately.

While beer has long been considered “a man’s drink,” making beer was historically a woman’s craft.  Brewing beer dates back to ancient times, & women have been perfecting beer for thousands of years.

There were even beer GODDESSES.  

Fast forward to pre-Reformation Europe, when Beer Witches (independent women master brewers wearing tall, pointy hats) sold their expert brews in marketplaces.

While the patriarchy pushed many women out of brewing & back into traditional gender roles during the Reformation & colonial times, Prohibition saw the rise of women returning to homebrewing.

Even today, we continue to learn just how impactful women master brewers were & the socioeconomic these women saw during their times.
