While beer has long been considered “a man’s drink,” making beer was historically a woman’s craft. Brewing beer dates back to ancient times, & women have been perfecting beer for thousands of years.
There were even beer GODDESSES.
Fast forward to pre-Reformation Europe, when Beer Witches (independent women master brewers wearing tall, pointy hats) sold their expert brews in marketplaces.
While the patriarchy pushed many women out of brewing & back into traditional gender roles during the Reformation & colonial times, Prohibition saw the rise of women returning to homebrewing.
Even today, we continue to learn just how impactful women master brewers were & the socioeconomic these women saw during their times.
