  • #74. Identity Struggles: The Secret to a Stronger Sense of Self | My Counselor Says ft. Megan, Amy, & Greg

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, our NICC® therapists are back for another My Counselor Says conversation!

Host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to explore a question that sounds simple but can become surprisingly complicated:

    "Who am I?"

Maybe you've recently experienced a major life change. Your kids are growing up, your career is shifting, a relationship has ended, or you're entering a season of life that looks nothing like what you expected.

Suddenly, the roles, routines, and relationships that once helped define you are changing. And you find yourself wondering...

"If I'm not who I used to be, then who am I now?"

Identity struggles can leave us feeling lost, disconnected, and uncertain about our purpose. But what if these uncomfortable seasons of change could also become opportunities to discover more of who God created us to be?

In this episode, Amy, Greg, and Megan explore why our sense of identity can feel shaken during life transitions, what remains constant as we change, and how we can develop a stronger, healthier sense of self.

    Together they discuss:

    • What triggers identity struggles and a loss of self
    • Why major life changes can make us feel like we're losing who we are
    • What parts of our identity remain through life's transitions
    • How new aspects of our identity can emerge through growth
    • The role of faith in understanding who we are
    • Practical ways to develop a stronger, healthier sense of identity

Sometimes the hardest part of change isn't what we're losing around us. It's the feeling that we're losing ourselves in the process. You may be changing, but that doesn't mean you're losing yourself.

Your identity is more than your job, your relationships, your accomplishments, or the season of life you're in. You might be discovering more of who you were created to become.

So instead of asking, "How do I get back to who I used to be?", maybe a more helpful question is: "Who is God inviting me to become in this season?"

    Key Takeaways:

    • Our identity can become tied to our roles, relationships, and accomplishments.
    • Major life transitions can shake our sense of identity.
    • Feeling lost during change can be an opportunity to rediscover ourselves.
    • Recognizing what remains constant helps build a stronger sense of self.
    • Personal growth can reveal new strengths, values, and interests.
    • Faith provides a foundation for our worth, purpose, and identity.
    • Building a stronger identity starts with understanding who we are and what matters to us.
    • We don't need everything figured out to move forward with confidence.

  • #73. Why Does Uncertainty Make You So Anxious? | My Counselor Says Ft. Megan, Greg, & Amy

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, our NICC® therapists are back for another My Counselor Says conversation!

Host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to talk about something every single one of us will face at some point:

    Uncertainty.

Maybe you're facing a major life transition. Maybe you're waiting for an answer about your health, finances, career, or relationships. Or maybe life just isn't going according to plan, and you have absolutely no idea what comes next.

And if you're anything like most of us, not knowing can feel pretty uncomfortable. We like plans. We like answers. We like knowing what's around the corner.

But what happens when life doesn't give us those things?

In this episode, Amy, Greg, and Megan explore why uncertainty can feel so threatening, how our nervous systems respond to the unknown, and what it looks like to navigate life's unpredictable seasons with greater confidence, flexibility, and faith.

    Together they discuss:

    • Why uncertainty feels so difficult
    • The life transitions that can trigger uncertainty and anxiety
    • Why some people tolerate uncertainty better than others
    • Understanding fear and the purpose it serves
    • How fear can drive our need for control
    • Practical ways to begin navigating uncertain circumstances
    • How to keep moving forward when you don't know what comes next

Uncertainty is part of life, but it doesn't have to control how we live.

When we don't know what's coming next, fear can tempt us to overthink, worry, and try to control everything around us. But peace doesn't require having all the answers.

Learning to navigate uncertainty means understanding our fears, letting go of what we can't control, and trusting God as we take the next step. ❤️

    Key Takeaways:

    • Uncertainty is a normal part of life, but our nervous systems can respond to the unknown as though something threatening might happen.
    • Major life transitions, even positive ones, can bring unexpected anxiety because they disrupt what's familiar and predictable.
    • Fear has a purpose. It's designed to alert us to potential threats, but it doesn't always accurately predict what's going to happen.
    • Learning to navigate uncertainty involves developing greater emotional awareness, flexibility, and the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.
    • Moving forward doesn't require having every answer. Sometimes it means learning to take the next healthy step while the future remains uncertain.

  • #72. The Hidden Cost of Saying “I’m Fine” | My Counselor Says Ft. Megan, Greg, & Amy

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, our NICC® therapists are back for another My Counselor Says conversation!

Host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to talk about something almost all of us have done at one time or another:

The cost of pretending you're fine.

    You know how it goes.

Someone asks, "How are you doing?" And before you've even had a chance to think about it, you respond:

    "I'm fine!" 😊

    But are you?

Maybe you're overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted, frustrated, or hurting. Maybe you don't want to burden anyone else with your problems. Or maybe you've become so good at pushing through that you don't even realize how much you're carrying.

Here's the thing: Pretending you're fine might feel like it's helping you get through life, but what is it actually costing you?

In this episode, Amy, Greg, and Megan explore why we hide our emotions, what's happening in our nervous systems when we do, and how we can begin creating healthier patterns of honesty, connection, and healing.

    Together they discuss:

    • How hiding our emotions can become an unconscious habit
    • What's happening in your nervous system when you're pretending everything is okay
    • How emotional suppression can affect our physical health
    • The spiritual cost of pretending we have everything together
    • Practical steps toward greater emotional honesty and healing
    • How to become a safe person others can be honest with

If you've been struggling behind the scenes while telling everyone you're doing great, you don't have to pretend you're okay to be worthy of love, connection, and support. God didn't create us to live behind a mask.

Healthy emotional living doesn't require telling everyone everything. It means learning to recognize what's happening inside us and finding appropriate, safe ways to be honest about it.

So the next time someone asks how you're doing, take the first step toward healing by sharing what's actually going on.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Sometimes we hide our emotions so habitually that we don't recognize we're doing it.
    • Our nervous systems can influence how we respond to relational stress, including tendencies toward people pleasing and emotional avoidance.
    • Emotional suppression can contribute to stress and affect our overall well-being.
    • We may hide emotions like sadness, anger, fear, disappointment, and shame because we're uncertain how others will respond.
    • Emotional honesty doesn't mean sharing everything with everyone. It means learning to recognize what we're feeling and share appropriately with safe people.
    • Healing can begin when we stop automatically hiding what's happening inside and start becoming curious about it.
    • We can help others feel safer by listening without judgment, responding with compassion, and making room for honest emotions.

  • #71. "Why Do I Avoid Hard Conversations?" | My Counselor Says Ft. Megan, Amy, & Greg

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, our NICC® therapists are back for another My Counselor Says conversation!

Host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to talk about something most of us would probably rather avoid:

    Hard conversations.

You know something needs to be said, a boundary needs to be communicated, feelings have been hurt, expectations aren't lining up... There's tension in a relationship, and you know ignoring it probably isn't going to make things better.

But every time you think about bringing it up, your brain begins churning the conversation into the worst possible outcome.

So how can we talk about hard things without damaging the relationships we care about and overcome that fear?

In this episode, Amy, Greg, and Megan discuss:

    • What holds us back from having difficult conversations
    • Why we avoid conflict even when we know avoidance isn't helping
    • What's happening underneath our fear of difficult conversations
    • How to have a hard conversation without unnecessarily damaging the relationship
    • How to approach conflict in healthier, more productive ways
    • What to do when you've tried and still feel stuck
    • What getting additional help can look like when conflict becomes difficult to navigate on your own

Avoiding a difficult conversation can feel like you're protecting the relationship.

But sometimes, the conversation you're afraid could hurt the relationship is the conversation the relationship actually needs.

Having the courage to talk about the hard thing is an important step toward healing the relationship.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Avoiding hard conversations may bring short-term relief, but it doesn't necessarily resolve the underlying problem.
    • Understanding what holds you back from conflict can help you approach difficult conversations differently.
    • Having a hard conversation doesn't have to mean attacking, blaming, or damaging the relationship.
    • Healthy conflict involves learning how to communicate difficult things while still caring for the relationship.
    • The goal isn't to eliminate every uncomfortable feeling. It's learning how to navigate discomfort in healthier ways.
    • Sometimes relational patterns are difficult to change without outside perspective and support.
    • Asking for help can be an important next step when you continually find yourself avoiding conflict or getting stuck in the same unhealthy conversations.

  • #70. How To Stop Being A Perfectionist | My Counselor Says Ft. Megan, Amy, & Greg

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, our NICC® therapists are back for another My Counselor Says conversation!

Host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to tackle something that can look productive on the outside while creating anxiety, exhaustion, and pressure on the inside:

    Perfectionism.

Maybe you call it having high standards. Maybe you just really like doing things the “right” way. Or maybe you’ve discovered that no matter how much you accomplish, it never quite feels like enough.

So when does pursuing excellence cross the line into perfectionism?

And more importantly, how do you stop letting perfectionism run your life?

In this episode, Amy, Greg, and Megan discuss:

    • How perfectionism shows up in everyday life
    • The important difference between perfectionism and healthy excellence
    • How perfectionism can contribute to anxiety and burnout
    • The connection between people pleasing and perfectionism
    • What happens when your identity becomes attached to your performance
    • Finding a more secure sense of identity outside of what you accomplish
    • Practical steps toward loosening perfectionism’s grip on your life

Breaking free from perfectionism doesn't mean you stop caring, lower every standard, or abandon excellence. It means learning that your worth doesn't rise and fall with your performance.

You can make mistakes. You can disappoint someone. You can learn as you go.

And you can pursue excellence without demanding perfection from yourself.

Maybe overcoming perfectionism begins with replacing the question “How do I get everything right?” with a different one:

“Why does getting this wrong feel so threatening?”

    Key Takeaways:

    • Perfectionism can show up in ways we don’t immediately recognize.
    • Excellence and perfectionism aren’t the same thing. You can care deeply about doing something well without demanding perfection from yourself.
    • Perfectionism can create cycles of anxiety, pressure, and burnout.
    • People pleasing and perfectionism can become closely connected when our sense of worth depends on the approval of others.
    • When identity becomes tied to achievement, mistakes can begin to feel like statements about who we are rather than simply part of being human.
    • Overcoming perfectionism involves more than telling yourself to “relax.” It means becoming curious about what is driving the need to be perfect.
    • Small, practical changes can help you begin pursuing growth and excellence without allowing perfectionism to control you.

  • #69. Why We Have Big Emotions (And How to Handle Them) | My Counselor Says Ft. Megan, Amy, & Greg

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! We're doing something new today on The Road to Happiness Podcast!

We're introducing My Counselor Says, conversations with MyCounselor.Online's own NICC® therapists about the questions, struggles, and challenges they help people navigate every day.

For this first conversation, your host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to talk about something every single one of us experiences:

    Emotions.

Why did God give us such big emotions? What are we supposed to do with them? And why do Christians sometimes treat emotions like anger, sadness, fear, or disappointment as if they're inherently bad?

In God's Good Design for Emotions, Amy, Greg, and Megan explore what Scripture teaches us about our emotional lives and some of the common pitfalls that can make emotions even harder to navigate.

    In this episode, they discuss:

    • Why God designed us to experience BIG emotions
    • Why some emotions can feel so BIG
    • Common emotional pitfalls that can keep us stuck
    • What Scriptures say about emotions
    • Why Christians sometimes label certain emotions as "bad"
    • Three important ways to think about your emotions
    • Practical steps you can take when you're struggling with what you feel

Sadness, anger, fear, disappointment, joy, excitement, and everything in between are part of the emotional capacity God designed into you.

The goal isn't to never experience difficult emotions, but learning how to recognize them, understand them, and respond to them in healthy ways.

So the next time a big emotion shows up, instead of immediately asking, "How do I get rid of this?", get curious:

"What is this emotion trying to tell me?"

    Key Takeaways:

    • Having big emotions doesn't automatically mean something is wrong.
    • Emotions are part of God's design and can give us important information about what's happening within us.
    • How we understand and respond to our emotions matters.
    • Christians can sometimes confuse experiencing a difficult emotion with responding to that emotion in an unhealthy way.
    • Scripture gives us a richer picture of emotional life than simply dividing feelings into "good" and "bad."
    • When emotions become overwhelming or difficult to navigate alone, reaching out for support can be an important next step.

  • #68. The Anxiety Signal Pt. 19: Can Christians Use Medical Marijuana? What You Need to Know

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend, we've made it to the final episode of The Anxiety Signal! ❤️

Throughout this series, Josh & Cassie have explored anxiety through the lenses of neuroscience, relationships, trauma, emotional health, Scripture, community, therapy, medication, and healing.

Now we're wrapping things up with one of the more complicated conversations in anxiety and trauma treatment:

👉 What should Christians think about marijuana, ketamine, psychedelics, and other drug-assisted approaches to mental health treatment?

There's a big difference between recreational drug use and substances being explored or used within professional treatment settings. There are also important questions about effectiveness, risks, wisdom, legality, medical supervision, and how these approaches fit within a Christian worldview.

Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, Josh & Cassie unpack how they think about these questions and how Christians can approach emerging treatments thoughtfully rather than reacting from either fear or hype.

In this episode, Josh & Cassie discuss:

    • The important distinction between recreational drug use and therapeutic treatment
    • THC, psychedelics, ketamine, and their use or study in mental health and PTSD treatment
    • Why medication or drug-assisted approaches shouldn't automatically be confused with healing the root of anxiety
    • Why Josh & Cassie believe community and relationships have an important role in healing
    • Non-drug treatment options for anxiety and trauma
    • How to think carefully and make an informed decision when considering different treatment approaches
    • Why some of these emerging treatment options remain a work in progress and shouldn't be treated as miracle cures
    • How Christians can approach complicated mental health decisions with wisdom, discernment, and grace

After 19 episodes, here's one of the biggest things we hope you take away from The Anxiety Signal:

Your anxiety is worth listening to.

There are many tools that may play a role in treating anxiety. Some are well established. Others are still developing. Some may help with symptoms, while deeper work may be necessary to address what's underneath them.

The goal isn't to chase the newest treatment or reject something simply because it's unfamiliar.

The goal is to become informed, seek wise and appropriately qualified guidance, understand your options, and pursue healing with discernment.

Most importantly, you don't have to walk that journey alone.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Recreational drug use and medically supervised treatment are not the same.
    • Different substances and treatment approaches come with different potential benefits, limitations, and risks.
    • Emerging treatments shouldn't be viewed as quick fixes or guaranteed cures for anxiety or trauma.
    • Symptom relief and deeper healing aren't always the same thing.
    • Non-drug approaches remain an important part of the conversation about anxiety and trauma treatment.
    • Healthy relationships and community can play an important role in a person's healing journey.
    • Christians don't have to approach mental health treatment from a place of fear. We can ask thoughtful questions, seek wise counsel, and make informed decisions.

  • #67. The Anxiety Signal Pt. 18: Anxiety Treatments: What Helps Symptoms vs. What Actually Heals?

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend, welcome back to The Anxiety Signal series.

When you're struggling with anxiety, there are a LOT of things people tell you to try.

Medication. Exercise. Better sleep. Therapy. Prayer. Changing your diet. Managing stress.

And many of those things really can help.

    But here's the bigger question:

👉 Which one actually helps anxiety the most?

Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, Josh & Cassie explore some of the most common approaches people use to address anxiety, what each one can and can't do, and what it looks like to move beyond simply managing symptoms toward addressing the root of your anxiety.

In this episode, Josh & Cassie discuss:

    • The pros and cons of anxiety medication and the role it can play
    • How lifestyle medicine can help reduce and manage anxiety symptoms
    • Why prayer and spiritual intervention can make a meaningful difference
    • The difference between managing anxiety symptoms and addressing what's underneath them
    • What it means to get to the root of your anxiety instead of only trying to quiet the alarm
    • What actually helps create deeper, lasting healing

So, what helps anxiety the most? There's an important difference between helping your anxiety symptoms and healing what's causing the alarm to keep sounding.

And when you're ready to explore what's underneath that signal, you can begin moving beyond symptom management toward deeper healing.

    Key Takeaways:

    • There isn't just one tool people use to address anxiety, and different approaches can serve different purposes.
    • Medication can play an important role, but it's helpful to understand both its benefits and limitations.
    • Lifestyle medicine can support your nervous system and improve anxiety symptoms.
    • Prayer and spiritual care matter because we're more than just our symptoms.
    • Symptom relief and root-level healing aren't necessarily the same thing.
    • Understanding what your anxiety is signaling can help you identify what needs attention beneath the symptoms.
    • Therapy can provide a space to address the deeper patterns, wounds, relationships, and experiences connected to your anxiety. But not just any therapy...

  • #66. The Anxiety Signal Pt. 17: Can You Cure Anxiety for Good? When the Alarm Can Finally Rest

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend, welcome back to The Anxiety Signal series.

After spending this series unpacking what anxiety is, why it happens, and what healing can look like, we're tackling one of the biggest questions of all:

👉 Can anxiety actually be cured?

Can you reach a place where anxiety no longer controls your life? Does healing mean you'll never feel anxious again? And if anxiety is a signal, what happens when you've finally addressed what the alarm has been trying to tell you?

Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, Josh & Cassie explore what lasting healing from anxiety can really look like and the hope Jesus offers for your healing journey.

In this episode, Josh & Cassie discuss:

    • Whether it's really possible to "cure" anxiety and what lasting healing actually means
    • What your anxiety may have been signaling to you all along
    • What changes when you begin healing the things underneath your anxiety
    • What your individual healing journey can look like and why everyone's process may be different
    • What it means for the anxiety alarm to finally be able to rest
    • What Jesus desires for you as you pursue healing, freedom, peace, and wholeness

So, can anxiety be cured for good? Maybe the better question is this:

Can you heal to the point that anxiety no longer needs to run your life?

Your anxiety has been sounding an alarm for a reason. Healing is about learning to understand that signal, address what's underneath it, and help your nervous system discover that it doesn't have to stay on high alert.

The goal isn't to become a person who never feels anxiety.

It's to become someone who can recognize the signal, understand what it means, and respond from a place of greater peace, maturity, and freedom. The alarm can finally rest. ❤️

    Key Takeaways:

    • Anxiety is a signal, not simply an enemy that needs to be silenced.
    • Lasting healing involves understanding and addressing what your anxiety has been trying to communicate.
    • Healing doesn't necessarily mean you'll never experience the emotion of anxiety again.
    • Your healing journey is personal, and meaningful change often happens over time.
    • As the underlying sources of anxiety are addressed, your nervous system can learn that it doesn't need to keep sounding the alarm.
    • Jesus cares about your healing and invites you toward greater freedom, peace, connection, and wholeness.

  • #65. The Anxiety Signal Pt. 16: You Don’t Need a Degree to Help Someone With Anxiety: The Church & Mental Health

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend, welcome back to The Anxiety Signal series.

When someone you love is struggling with anxiety, what role are you supposed to play?

And if you're the one struggling, where does the Church fit into your healing?

Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, Josh & Cassie explore the role of the Church in healing anxiety and why caring for one another's emotional and mental health isn't something Christians should leave entirely to professionals.

Professional counseling matters. But so does the Body of Christ.

In this episode, Josh & Cassie unpack:

    • What the Church actually is and what Scripture says about its purpose
    • The strengths and limitations of professional mental health care
    • What it means to follow in Jesus' footsteps and bear one another's burdens
    • The responsibility we have as the Body of Christ to care for neighbors struggling with anxiety and mental health
    • How healthy Christian communities can become part of someone's journey toward healing
    • Practical next steps you can take to better support someone experiencing anxiety

The answer to our mental health crisis can't simply be, "Go see a therapist."

Sometimes professional care is absolutely needed. But we also need friends. Mentors. Pastors. Families. Small groups. Churches. We need people willing to bear one another's burdens and walk alongside each other through difficult seasons.

That's part of what it means to be the Body of Christ. You have a role to play. We can become the kind of people, and the kind of Church, where no one has to struggle alone.

    Key Takeaways:

    • The Church is more than a place we attend. We are the Body of Christ, called to care for one another.
    • Scripture calls Christians to bear one another's burdens and follow the example of Jesus in how we love and serve others.
    • Professional mental health care can provide valuable expertise and support, but professionals cannot replace healthy, everyday Christian community.
    • Caring for people struggling with anxiety and mental health isn't only someone else's responsibility.
    • You don't have to be a therapist to become a safe, mature, supportive presence in someone's life.
    • Small, intentional steps can help us become the kind of community where people don't have to struggle alone.
