To celebrate our 1-year anniversary as an outlet since our first podcast on August 29, 2022, we review the winner of the social media bracket, Portrait of a Lady on Fire directed by Celine Sciamma in 2019. Set against the backdrop of 18th-century France, Sciamma paints a mesmerizing portrait of love, desire, and artistry as a female painter is obliged to deliver a wedding portrait for a woman set to be married. We review the delicate strokes of Claire Mathon’s visual storytelling and intimate performances of its stars, Noemie Merlant and Adele Haenel, entranced in a forbidden love that Sciamma herself has called a manifesto on the female gaze.

For the 24th double feature, we are going on a road trip together to discuss the theme of road trip movies where the protagonist's journey by car is a defining element of the story. The two films we are looking at within this gasoline-fueled subgenre are Thelma & Louise and Little Miss Sunshine. We discuss the characteristics of what makes a road trip movie and how the journey from point A to point B often reveals the mental and emotional journeys of the protagonists along the way.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of its original South Korean release, Neon is re-releasing Park Chan-wook's modern revenge classic Oldboy in theaters, starting August 16. To mark the occasion, the film was digitally restored and remastered in 4K HDR and we review the Korean auteur’s breakthrough thriller two decades later discussing why this film is still important today within Park’s filmography. We break down everything from the director’s singular directorial style to the octopus that was in the words of Roger Ebert, most certainly harmed in the making of this film.
