MORE ABOUT DAVID ROTHENBERG...
David Rothenberg‘s multilayered life has thrust him into Broadway‘s brightest lights, prison riots, political campaigns, civil rights sit-ins, and a Central American Civil War. After reading the script for Fortune and Men’s Eyes by former prisoner and playwright John Herbert, he was instrumental in producing the play in New York. He started The Fortune Society on the stage after a performance. Moved by the performance, 16 audience members contributed $2 each, Rothenberg opened a bank account for $32, and The Fortune Society was born. 58 years later, The Fortune Society has a staff of 600 people and six residences for formerly incarcerated men and women. Unique in the history of the American Theatre, this was a social change movement with national implications that penetrated through the proscenium arch. Later, he was a civilian observer during the Attica Prison riot, which left a deep impression on him and spurred his lifelong activism for prisoner's rights. This inspired him to found the Fortune Society in 1967, now one of the nation’s leading advocacy and service organizations in criminal justice. As a theatre publicity agent, he represented some of the most heralded and successful productions in the second half of the 20th century including Richard Burton‘s Hamlet; the original production of Hair; Beyond The Fringe; Sir John Gielgud’s production of The School for Scandal; Tennessee Williams’ Night Of The Iguana and Slapstick Tragedy; Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party; and several plays by Edward Albee including Everything In The Garden, Box Mao Box, Sandbox, Death of Bessie Smith and The American Dream; Blue Man Group; Tony and Tina’s Wedding; An Evening with Maurice Chevalier; and nearly 200 other productions. Rothenberg’s one-man show Namedropping was first presented off-Broadway in 2003 and is still performed in the New York City area. As a social activist, he was appointed to the NYC Commission of Human Rights. He also served on several special state and city commissions in New York City, including a Governor’s Advisory Committee on Criminal Justice, a Mayor’s Task Force on Child Abuse, and the American Bar Association Commission on Correction. He has testified before numerous government committees, including several in Washington DC, before Senate and House Committees, and before State Legislative Committees around the nation. His book "Manhattan Mayhem" will be available on Amazon or wherever books are sold._______________________________________________________________

An incredible addition to the field of rock music documentaries, we get a glimpse into the punk rock world of pirate radio in Los Angeles –which ruled the airwaves in the 1990’s, this is a must see documentary for music documentary fans everywhere. “40 Watts From Nowhere” features interviews with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, Germs drummer Don Bolles and pirate radio activist Stephen Dunifer, among others. Slamdance Film Festival 2025 will take place from February 20th – 26th with in-person screenings at the Director's Guild of America (DGA) and at the Quixote West Hollywood Studios, and will be available virtually on slamdancechannel.com from February 24th – March 7th. In-person world premiere on Saturday, February 22nd at 6:15pm at the Panasonic LUMIX Theatre in Quixote Studios West. **Full reviews embargoed until after World Premiere**
Frustrated by what she was hearing on commercial radio in the ‘90s, a young woman builds a station from scratch and broadcasts from her Los Angeles apartment. “40 Watts from Nowhere” is a captivating documentary about Los Angeles pirate radio station KBLT and the 1990s low-power FM movement in the U.S. It’s based around fascinating vintage footage shot in 1998 that shows KBLT operating 24/7 out of an apartment closet in Silver Lake with DJs running the gamut from Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), Mike Watt (Minutemen) and Don Bolles (Germs) to garden-variety music fans playing everything from jungle and punk to vintage country and French pop.
Sue Carpenter started the 40-watt FM station in 1995, exploiting a legal case that allowed hundreds of low-power illegal radio operators to proliferate throughout the country and gave birth to the legal LPFM movement. Carpenter was 28 years old, a secretary and an aspiring journalist when she first set up KBLT and invited strangers into her house to spin whatever the hell they wanted. It soon took on a life of its own, drawing Mazzy Star to headline a benefit concert and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to play live in her living room.
The vintage footage captures the arc of the story, from its full-tilt heyday in the summer of 1998 to its FCC shutdown later that year. Shot by a DJ who intended to make a documentary but never did, the vintage footage is rounded out with interviews Carpenter conducted in 2023, including Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, Germs drummer Don Bolles and pirate radio activist Stephen Dunifer.

Lauren Marcus is an actor and writer living in NYC. She is a 2021 finalist for the Jonathan Larson Grant. How funny that she know tells his legacy and sings his songs in "The Jonathan Larson Project" now playing in NYC!
Lauren has been on Broadway. She has acted in TV and films! As a singer-songwriter, Lauren released her debut EP, Never Really Done With You and has had sold out runs around NYC! She has worked with her husband Joe Iconis on Love Letters and other amazing projects!
About The Show:
When Jonathan Larson died unexpectedly at the age of 35, it was hours before his musical RENT took the world by storm. Larson was hailed posthumously as the voice of a generation, winning Tony Awards® and the Pulitzer Prize, and achieving his life-long dream of changing Broadway forever… although he tragically wasn’t there to see it. In his apartment, he left behind hundreds of cassette tapes, scripts, music files, journals – boxes of his writing from shows that were never produced and projects that were never seen… until now.
The Jonathan Larson Project brings to the stage the extraordinary unheard songs of the writer who revolutionized Broadway. This powerful new musical asks how we can make a difference in the world today, with Larson’s voice reaching through time to inspire audiences. From presidential elections to environmental activism to creating and connecting despite every obstacle, Larson’s songs speak to our present time with stunning resonance.
At the same time, The Jonathan Larson Project reflects the journey of an unknown young artist, struggling against rejection, making ends meet as a waiter in a diner, and finding his voice… which he has no idea will someday lead to triumph and enduring fame. The show includes cut songs from RENT and tick, tick… BOOM! as well as songs that have never been performed in a theater before. Fortunately for the world of musical theatre, Larson gave us more to see – and that work has finally hit the stage.
