On this interview I speak to Anna Murakawa who has spent her lifetime dedicated to the sounds of the violin. Since discovering her passion at the age of 13 in her hometown of São Paulo, Brazil, she continued on her musical journey as she moved around the world to gain even more experience through her studies and performances. She spent several years studying in Bulgaria, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, and Texas in the USA and is now in Sydney Australia, where she calls home.
She has attended dozens of festivals and masterclasses around the world, learning from masters like Tasmin Little, Haim Taub, Leon Spierer, Max Rabinowitz, Andrés Cardenes, Shmuel Ashkenazy, and Stoika Milanova.
As a concertmaster, Anna has led a variety of ensembles worldwide, including the Kentucky Opera, University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra, Femusic Orchestra, Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra, amongst others. As a soloist, she performed in the USA, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Bulgaria. Further, she also has won several competitions internationally, such as the UofL Concerto competition, Maria Terezia Competition, and Austrian Chamber Music Competition.
In 2008 Anna was the inspiration, and the recipient of a scholarship created in Brazil, "Programa de Bolsa Projeto Guri", which supported her travels to Bulgaria and the U.S. She also held the University of Louisville Graduate Assistantship, and Texas Tech University Graduate Assistantship. She currently holds the "Ted & Susan Meller" Violin scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she is honoured to be studying with the renowned Norwegian violinist Ole Bøhn. She is now completing her Ph.D., where her thesis focuses sharply on how we can learn and practice more efficiently and effectively.
A sought after Sydney based violinist, Anna currently works as a violin teacher at University of Sydney program Play at the Con and her violin studio. In addition to her ventures as an entrepreneur starting her business, directing Bravo Music Events, she has also been freelancing as a performer, recording artist & playing big shows with amazing artists and ensembles in Australia and internationally.
We discuss so much about her whole experience and struggles to get to where she is today and how she coped with every single challenge, how she managed to learn to speak 7 languages, how reframing thoughts can help to learn new things in a more enjoyable and effective way and deal with adversity, and much more, please welcome Anna Murakawa
