This week on the podcast trans Australia runner Troy Jones joins me to talk all things mental health and running. Troy is no stranger to the depths of his own mind and wants to show people in his circle and anyone he can reach through social media that you can change the way you look at your own life for the better.

Troy in 2021 ran across Australia in 72 days covering 4000kms in the process. The logistics alone was one hurdle but to run on average 50-60km a day is another. Troy has the mental capability and capacity to to over come depression and push through barriers he never knew he had. This was a great conversation and I had a lot of fun recording it. No interview this week. I want to keep this episode quick but intimate. I will warn you as there are some touchy subjects mentioned in this one. From my own personal experience but also a lot of others around me. 

This is a mini recap from the events that happened this weekend and how we can learn and master our selves. Vulnerability is the cure to this mental health pandemic. Without it, there is no recovery. Take the lead and speak out, give permission to the friends and family around you to do the same. We all have that power SO USE IT! 

We are all sick and tired of rising suicide rates and yet there are more mental health resources around us than ever before? 

There has to be another way out. Breathe work wont fix it, cold plunges wont fix it, eating a clean, vegan diet wont fix it... They all help but this is a lot bigger than surface level, band aid style fixes. We need to go deep! We need to talk about the dark pasts and the shadows that lurk behind us. 

Thats what made us who we are. Thats what got us there in the first place, it will get us out.

Arman Vestad... What can I say! What a beautiful soul he is. His story is the perfect example of how turning your life around is possible but you need to do the work. From very humble beginnings to hardened criminal, Arman is no stranger to the dark side of the human condition. Over-dosing 5 times in 10 days from the use of GHB to supplying guns that were used in a triple homicide to being incarcerated for many years. Arman has completely and utterly turned his life around for the better and for ever. A family man, an international spokes person for why employers should hire ex-criminals, a mental health advocate and all round amazing man, we cant wait to see where and what he does in the future.

After weeks of trying to align schedules we finally got to sit down with endurance athlete Jake Malby, AKA The Forest Goat. From being at the literal end of his life with the chair, rope and note ready to go, to the phone call that changed the trajectory of his life forever. 

Jake is no stranger to the dark, scary depths of mental health but has stood up and said enough is enough. He is now a decorated ultra, endurance athlete from 31 marathons in 31 days to a 24 hour endurance run, Jake understands what it takes to master the mind and his spirit in his quest of self enlightenment.  An advocate for mental health awareness his mission is to change the way we look at mental health through fund raising, running and connecting with the community and in all his glory, has achieved this and beyond. With many feats planned for the future, we cannot wait to see what this powerhouse human has to offer. Big things to come for the man. Watch his space.

This week on the podcast I sit down with Danielle Britz, a former colleague and fellow friend. We talk all things mental health, grief and how Dani navigated her own mental health state after losing both parents within 13 months of one another. The key term here is "feel to heal" and she has taken that on in full force. Not only coming out of a deep depression and near suicide attempt she has found new meaning in deep and meaningful conversation.  

The vulnerability and comfort this lady showed during our time together really shows how unstoppable she truly is. A powerhouse that wont be stopped. As we all are, she is still healing and wants you to know that it's okay not to be okay and that you need to reach out if you are struggling with your mental health.  It's time we re-asses how we look at mental health, its time we get it done together and pave the path. This is not an episode to miss!

Trent Harding... What can I say. From 100kg Slob to 100mile ultra, elite, endurance athlete. This week I had the opportunity to sit down with Trent who is an idol of mine. We go deep on his early life of drugs and partying and how he lost everything to how he turned his life around all on his own to be the best version of himself. 

A jack of all trades, Trent is now a full time father to 2 beautiful children, madly in love with his partner and fitting in time to train upwards of 15+ hrs a week. What can I say, the man is a humble power house. From completing 8 x 100km Ultramarathons, 2 x 100milers, plus many other triathlons and local ultra races and qualifying for the worlds championships at Kona in Hawaii, this amazing human has a huge resume of achievements under his belt.

“Do something that scares the fuck out of you, then and only will you find out who you truly are.” 

I did attempt to record this podcast whilst recording a IGTV series describing this experience. So please bare with me and give me the benefit of the doubt as I don't have all the gear necessary to make it of professional standard how ever doing the best I can with what I have ;) And yes you get to hear me cry. This was a huge experience for me from who I was to what I have just achieved is a huge milestone. One I wont forget!

How to articulate my 100km experience via typed podcast description. 

It was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I was very naive going into this race on a whim after Callum had said he had entered. A very “enter now, figure it out later” attitude. I have had no real 100k specific training in the lead up with only a couple 4-5hr run equaling 80km all together 4 weeks out. 

I started hurting at 45km and really hurting at 60k… @ 70k I was done… So I thought… I was no where near done. My mind was playing tricks on me asking me, begging me, for my legs to stop, I wasn’t having any of that shit. I was finishing this fucker. The last 30km was the hardest 30km of my life. Walk, jog, walk, jog, run, jog, repeat. I would run for what felt like hours only to realise you have only moved 3km down the road… but I knew every step I took was closer to seeing my beautiful fiancé and 2 beautiful kids at the finish line. If it wasn’t for them, plus Callum and Rory, my crew, I may have not finished…. who am I kidding, I was finishing this thing no matter what. 

Taking a wrong turn @ 98km in I was lost for 40min trying to get my bearings with only a hand held bike torch and a dead phone. No maps no nothing, in the dead of night searching for that pink tape we had been following the entire time… but nothing…. Eventually I found my self at the school after going to a main road and following that until I saw traffic. 

After crossing the line in 16hr and 37 minutes I can now call myself an ultra marathon runner and have rewired my brain to endure more. You are capable of soooo much more than you think, trust me on that. Wether it be running or anything to do with your life, we are durable animals and can withstand ALOT including pain. You just need to throw yourself in the deep end because eventually you will learn how to swim one way or another. 

That fucking hurt and I fucking loved it.
