The Saturday Matinée by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

Steve's on his Oscar catchup binge. Is Cloverfield yet another casualty in the Netflix dumping ground? Could Disney maybe be a little less open with their Star Wars plans? We've got a set of solid trailers and a list of movies that is largely unrelated to "The Young Girls of Rochefort."

JJ FINALLY saw Blade Runner 2049! Best use of finally. We talk Gosling and La La Land and the President’s Day openings for Black Panther, Game Night, and Annihilation. Speaking of the later, turns out Netflix has international distribution rights for it … weird. Two cool trailers with repeat trailer star and next George Clooney, Jon Hamm. Plus, Ant-Man’s back with a girlfriend!

This week, even more actors are lining up to be replaced by Christopher Plummer, the busiest man in entertainment. James Franco has reached peak James Franco. The Oscar nominees have been released with some pleasant surprises (we mostly ignore the things that aggravate us). And Edgar Wright does the yeoman’s work of making Kumail Nanjiani eat Brussels Sprouts.

This week, a rundown of the absurdly long list of 80’s remakes currently in some stage of development. This on the heels of the announcement of a Heathers TV show? Seriously? Have they no dignity? Get ready because Akira, Alien Nation, Big Trouble in Little China, Clue, and so, so many more are on the way to a theater near you. Van Damme is back in a new trailer that may just spawn a series on this very show (about time), and we have a list of Fire Sale movies that was hard won!

Marvel has up and destroyed their slate of upcoming films, pushing New Mutants back far enough to be able to reshoot the whole thing. Gambit loses a third director. But at least we get Deadpool 2 two weeks ahead of schedule. We’ve got a couple of fun trailer releases to talk about, and a slate of movie for the list this week that was… dare we say… hard won.

We’re back after an exceptionally long winter’s night! We’ve got new show babies (welcome to the world Nextreel Ivanho Tilkvist!), we cop to misinterpreting sloppily edited Die Hard and the controversy it ignited, two bizarro trailers, and two lists for you to build your watchlist for the week. Happy New Year!

Just a quick scheduling announcement. Happy holidays to all of you fantastic people!
