  • Valuable Copywriting Knowledge with Nicki Krawczyk

    Send us Fan Mail

You are going to walk away with a lot of copywriting knowledge from this episode with Nicki.

Nicki Krawczyk is a copywriter with 15+ years of experience, writing for multi-billion-dollar companies, solopreneurs, and every size business in between. She also coaches people to become professional copywriters and build thriving careers of their own.

The best piece of copywriting advice she has for writers just starting a writing business:

    • Understand exactly what you’re getting into. Like content writing and copywriting are kinda two sides of the same writing coin. There will be some overlap here and there. So, know the difference between content and copywriting.
    • You have to put your copywriting skills to use. If you’re thinking that you don’t have copywriting skills but I assure you that you do because you’re working with clients, and you’re solving their pain point. You’re establishing those pain points and that’s exactly a copy.

But why people think that copywriting is difficult and hard to land clients? Keep listening to learn more!

  • Following Up with Prospects After the Uncomfortable Silence

    Send us Fan Mail

Ever have an amazing pitch (in your opinion), but your potential client has not said one word? This episode dives into what you can do to follow up, in a less annoying way.

Just know that pitching is something you’re gonna have to do and you will also get a lot of pitches out. Sometimes you'll get 1 or 2 great clients because that’s just how it works.

Let’s talk about first that exciting feeling you get when you’re ready to start a project, ready to get more clients, and ready to start your health writing business.

So you just wanna follow up quickly. Like when you send out a cold pitch and you wanna follow up even the next day because you’re sitting there an hour waiting for their reply and maybe no response yet. But you have to relax because these content directors and content managers have a lot on their plate but unfortunately, you're not their number one priority. So, you have to wait for at least 3 to 4 business days, which means don’t send a pitch on a Friday and follow up on a Monday. Remember the business days because that’s when people want you to follow up. They don’t want an email on Saturdays or Sundays because you may not wanna work on weekends and the same with them. So “make sure you guard your space a little bit too”.

Also when you send a pitch you have to have some sort of call to action, meaning do what you want your reader to do. Like, do you want them just to reply to say they are interested? Or applying saying no thanks and that’s still ok. You’d rather know that they’re not interested than keep following up and following up and not hearing anything from them because in your head there is still a potential.

The other thing you can do is use some tools in Gmail.

    • Boomerang - a very great tool because you can be reminded of the follow-ups.
    • Spreadsheet or template

In The Savvy Scribe Collective Group as well as in courses, I've shared a pitch template that you can use. It documents the clients, the email addresses that you’re using and maybe you’re using 2 different kinds of pitch templates in your email. The cool thing about Gmail, you can save different templates and you can kinda split test it to see which pitches are working. So, try new things, same with follow up, try different tactics about follow up.

The biggest takeaway I want you guys to do is to pitch, pitch, pitch, pitch, pitch, pitch, but don’t forget to follow up. Because sometimes they say that “the fortunes are in the follow-up and sometimes it is the follow-up that gets them to respond.”

Have a great day and go get your write on!

  • Amy Oestreicher Uses Her Beautiful Detour Journey to Enlighten Our Mindset as Writers

    Send us Fan Mail

Today's guest is Amy Oestreicher, who will share with us her beautiful detour journey to enlighten our mindset as writers. She is an Audie award-nominated playwright, performer, and multidisciplinary creator. A singer, librettist, and visual artist, she dedicates her work to celebrating untold stories, and the detours in life that can spark connections and transform communities.

    Two things she shares:

    1. CT Authors Trail - She’ll be discussing my memoir "My Beautiful Detour: An Unthinkable Journey from Gutless to Grateful," the strategies for resilience we could all use, especially now.
    2. "Step Into Joy" – she’s leading a series of six zoom workshops and participatory prompts on claiming your own walking practice, exploring Walking as Art, as Meditation, and Connection.

Tips about setting up our positive mindset as writers:

    • "When you write, be centered in your values, know why you are writing, and be strong on what matters to you”. When Amy was so uninspired, she just started making a list from A to Z and just made herself write one thing that she was grateful for every letter. She did that to give her some kind of structure because she thinks when we’re lost sometimes, the structure helps.
    • The power of story - read as many stories as you can because you’ll start to trace those artsy of type of pattern and story stroke. There’s so much we can learn from the stories around us, like stories from people around us. “Start asking more questions, be curious. Everyone does have a story to tell.” Even when writers are trying to get a new freelance client, the number one mindset you have to do is to listen. Listen to their struggles and pain because everybody is different.

Four steps in Resilience she shares in her workshops that will help you develop a mindset :

    1. Gratitude
    2. Stories
    3. Creativity
    4. Hope

I really appreciate Amy and her connection with the audience. And I really appreciate her for sharing all her tips to have a proper mindset as writers with us.

  • Do You Know How To Video Pitch For Prospects? Learn From These Simple Tips

    Send us Fan Mail

Today's episode is talking about an era of video and how to utilize it in your pitches. This topic is perfect for everyone who writes pitches to gain clients. Find out how to get creative in writing pitches and engage your clients in a different way of communication.

Undoubtedly, the video stands out everywhere. Whether it's on Facebook, Instagram, or other social media channels, you can notice that many people are engaged with it. So now, let’s talk about the changes in video techniques and how you can use it to get clients. Using my experience, I will share some expert tips on how to incorporate video strategy into your pitching process.

I actually learned video pitching through Gina, my previous guest in Episode 64: PIVOT by adding services and growing your business with Gina Horkey. We talked about virtual assisting and types of work that you can add to your freelance services, and it was fun.

How to start incorporating video pitching for your clients:

    • Don’t hate yourself in the video.
    • Keep it short.
    • Hire somebody to edit your video.

Another cool trend that you must check out is a new feature on LinkedIn where you can do a video and a voice message.

If you’re interested in doing some video pitching and you are an insider on the Savvy Scribe Insider’s group, start using some of the tools like Zoom, Loom, and many more. Most of these video apps are just free so they are a must-try!
