Mike Cooper recaps UNLV’s 27-21 Week 0 loss to Memphis on Rebel Daily Drive.

The Rebels had chances to win at Allegiant Stadium, but red zone misses, a missed field goal before halftime, fourth-quarter pressure and explosive plays allowed gave Memphis enough room to leave Las Vegas with the win.

Jackson Arnold’s UNLV debut was one of the biggest positives. Arnold threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns, added a rushing score and helped the Rebels move the ball for most of the night. He hit DeAngelo Irvin Jr. on a big third-down throw, found Tavian McNair for a touchdown and later connected with Kayden McGee after a 54-yard run.

Dan Mullen, Jackson Arnold and Jake Pope spoke with the media after UNLV’s Week 0 loss to Memphis at Allegiant Stadium.

Mullen said the game came down to red zone scoring after UNLV came up empty on multiple chances, including two failed fourth downs and a missed field goal. He credited Memphis for playing a hard-fought game but said the Rebels need to take big steps forward with new faces and become more consistent.

Arnold discussed his first game in a UNLV uniform, the offense’s rhythm in the open field and the frustration of not finishing drives. Mullen said Arnold made quick reads, got the ball out, made good decisions and handled his first game in the offense well.

Pope discussed the defense’s energy, the explosives UNLV allowed and the need to clean up tackling and deep-ball mistakes. Mullen also talked about the fourth-down decision in the red zone, Memphis’ fourth-quarter pressure, Austin Boyd’s injury, BJ coming in at center and why the Rebels have to find ways to win close games.

Mike Matsumoto filled in for Mike Cooper on Rebel Daily Drive and was joined by new Scarlet Standard contributor Ed Gentry, a former UNLV wide receiver, to break down what he saw during the final stretch of UNLV fall camp.

Gentry discussed the Rebels’ wide receiver room, the bounce-back he saw after a rough first practice, Taeshaun Lyons’ leadership and why he views Lyons as the top receiver in the group right now. He also broke down what makes Vincent Carner intriguing as a route runner and why Peyton Zachary has stood out despite being undersized.

The conversation also turned to UNLV’s defensive backs, where Gentry pointed to Mumu Bin-Wahad as the tone-setter for the group. He explained what makes a good defensive back, including versatility, balance, acceleration, anticipation and strong hands, while also discussing the physical edge he saw from the secondary.

Matsumoto and Gentry also talked through the quarterback battle between Jackson Arnold and Alex Orji. Gentry praised Arnold’s catchable ball, timing and arm talent, while pointing to Orji’s leadership, voice and command of the huddle as his biggest strengths.
