The Rebel Daily Drive continues its coverage from the 2026 Mountain West Football Media Days with Northern Illinois as the Huskies prepare for their first season in a new conference.
NIU players discuss their introduction to the Mountain West, meeting players from around the league and the competition at the F1 Arcade, where Air Force was accused of using some questionable tactics on the track.
The conversation turns to Northern Illinois’ challenging nonconference schedule against Iowa and Arizona. The Huskies explain why they expect to compete in those games and how the program’s history of “Boneyard wins,” including its victory over Notre Dame, has shaped its confidence against major opponents.
The players also discuss the transition following Thomas Hammock’s departure and Rob Harley’s promotion to interim head coach. They explain how the team responded to the initial shock, why the players remained confident in one another and how Harley has brought consistent energy and leadership to the program.
Northern Illinois enters the fall with competition at quarterback. Brady Davidson and Jalen Macon both gained experience last season, and the Huskies explain what they need from the player who wins the job.
NIU also wants to become more balanced offensively. The Huskies remain committed to being a physical running team, but the players believe a more consistent passing attack will prevent defenses from loading the box and make the running game even more effective.
On defense, Northern Illinois is preparing for the variety of systems it will face in the Mountain West. The Huskies will have to adjust from Air Force’s option-based offense to San Jose State’s pass-heavy attack and several different schemes in between.
The players also discuss leadership, transfer-portal movement and the challenge of building chemistry as college football rosters continue to change. They explain how teammates spend time together away from football, share meals, watch sporting events and help new players understand the program’s standards.
NIU also addresses the move away from midweek MACtion. While the players understand why Tuesday night football became popular with fans, they explain why a more traditional Friday and Saturday schedule should create greater consistency with classes, practices, recovery and family viewing.
The episode closes with the players discussing how they stay grounded during the season, the Mountain West stadiums they are most excited to visit and their dream NIL partnerships.
